Early B 9/s Bauhaus canteen stool by Marcel Breuer, 1930s

About the Item

This rare early example of the B9 canteen stool, designed by Marcel Breuer in 1926 for the Bauhaus school canteen in Dessau , captures the radical simplicity and functional clarity at the heart of Bauhaus thinking. Originally conceived for communal spaces — factory dining halls, student canteens, waiting rooms — the B9 was never just about efficiency. It was about equality through design. With its seamless tubular steel frame and compact wooden seat, the stool speaks to Breuer’s vision of architecture as furniture — light, repeatable, modern. And yet, this piece has presence. Its wear tells a story of shared meals, conversations, perhaps even political awakenings. A timeless form that bridges art and industry — still perfectly suited to today’s minimal interiors, cultural spaces, or collectors of historic modernism. This example is an early production piece from the 1930s, likely manufactured by Thonet as model B 9s (label missing). Constructed from two pieces of tubular steel, with the seat originally attached using screws through the tube and side of the seat—later Thonet versions used metal flanges. Exceptionally well-preserved in its original condition. Dimensions: height 45 cm, width 45 cm, depth 39 cm. Tube diameter 3 cm.
