Credenza / Cabinet in Oak by George Nelson for Herman Miller, USA, c. 1950's

About the Item

Embrace the iconic mid-century modern style with this exquisite credenza designed by George Nelson for Herman Miller, part of the esteemed Basic Cabinet Series, crafted in the USA circa 1950s. Constructed from comb grain oak, this piece stands out with its original black painted tapered legs, a unique feature of Nelson's designs. The front-facing cabinet boasts two doors with curved steel cabinet pulls, a hallmark of Nelson's aesthetic. Inside, a shelf provides ample storage, making it perfect for media equipment, china, or other essentials. To the right, the cabinet features a stack of four drawers, each adorned with the same distinctive pulls as the cabinet doors. These drawers, hand-built with wooden slides, are structurally sound and glide smoothly, ready for decades of continued use. This credenza is a versatile and stylish addition to any space, embodying the timeless elegance and functionality of George Nelson's design legacy. George Nelson was an American industrial designer and is considered the founder of American modernist design. Working extensively as an industrial designer, architect, author, editor, and teacher throughout his prolific career Nelson would go on to have perhaps the most successful and influential career in American design history. Herman Miller was founded in 1905 as the Star Furniture Co. Initially the company produced furniture, especially bedroom suites, in historic revival styles. The company reformed as Herman Miller, Inc. in 1960 and was then led by architect George Nelson, who joined the firm as director of design in 1945. Over the next four decades, Nelson influenced Herman Miller through both his personal designs and the designers that he recruited, including Isamu Noguchi and Charles and Ray Eames. Though this extraordinary timepiece does show some signs of vintage wear (refer to photos for details) it still has so much to offer as a nearly original condition piece for collectors. Or if you'd prefer to have this piece fully restored by our artisans please message us prior to checkout to discuss options and pricing. Either way, make it yours today before it's truly gone forever. ---Dimensions--- Width: 56.5 in / 143.51 cm Depth: 18 in / 45.72 cm Height: 29.75 in / 75.57 cm Save for a few minor veneer repairs this extraordinary credenza designed by George Nelson for Herman Miller is in original, vintage condition. The mix of solid and veneered oak composition does show some signs of wear such as discoloration (specifically a large section on the top), one small burn and small veneer chipping all of which can be seen in the detail photos provided. All four drawers open and close with ease as do the two hinged doors. One of the two stabilizing arms that support the doors is missing but it does not effect the functionality of the door whatsoever. The steel handles unique to early Herman Miller pieces show only minor surface scratches and tarnishing. This iconic Herman Miller credenza is highly functional, structurally sound and ready for decades more of use. Please view all photos and video for details on this cabinet's current condition. We're limited on the amount of media we can post so additional photos and videos are available upon request.
