  • George Nakashima Wall-Mounted Sideboard in Walnut and Pandanus Cloth
By George Nakashima, George Nakashima Studio
    Located in Waalwijk, NL
George Nakashima, sliding-door wall-mounted cabinet, American black walnut, pandanus cloth, United States, 1963 With regard to its essential form, material use, and woodwork, this sliding-door wall-mounted cabinet is a testimony to George Nakashima's expert craftsmanship and distinctive methodology. This sideboard was specially designed for a private client in 1963. The unit revolves around a linear and strict layout with sharp lines and angular shapes dominating the scenery. This is contrasted by the organic, free flowing edges of the wooden slab on top. Behind the two sliding doors, the interior houses a spacious compartment and one shelf. The vertically grilled sliding doors are backed with pandanus cloth, made from a Southeast Asian Palm. Besides their functional property, the exposed dovetail joints have a strong decorative character, a constructive feature that is observable in these types of cabinets and benches by Nakashima. Nakashima succeeded in creating a durable piece of furniture with a timeless aesthetic and impeccable quality made possible by his close relationship with nature. George Nakashima (1905-1990) was a well-known woodworker, architect and furniture designer from Japanese descendants. He was born in Spokane, Washington and enrolled in the University of Washington program in architecture. After his graduation in 1931, he decided to live his life as a bohemian in France. Afterwards, he spent some time in North Africa and eventually settled in Japan for some time. There, he started working for Antonin Raymond...

  • George Nakashima 'Minguren II' Coffee Table in Oak Burl and Walnut
By George Nakashima, George Nakashima Studio
    Located in Waalwijk, NL
George Nakashima, 'Minguren II' coffee table, English oak burl, oak, American black walnut, United States, 1980 American woodworker and designer George Nakashima proves with this quintessential table that he is a true master of his craft. The impressive coffee table, created custom for a private client in 1980, is designed to fully showcase the individual characteristics of the slab burl on top. The organic, free flowing edges of the wood contribute to a dynamic and natural appearance of the design. This free-form character of the top contrasts beautifully with the stark simplicity of the base, a typical trade of Nakashima. The asymmetrical composition contributes to the strength of the design and the high-visual quality. Besides their functional property, the exposed dovetail joints have a strong decorative character. The table is signed and dated to underside: ‘George Nakashima March 1980’. George Nakashima (1905-1990) was a well-known woodworker, architect and furniture designer from Japanese descendants.
