Vienna Secession Furniture

VIENNA SECESSION STYLE & WIENER WERKSTÄTTE

At the turn of the 20th century, Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann and several of their peers separated from the predominant Association of Austrian Artists to form a new professional union, the Vienna Secession.

The artists’ intent to break free from classical traditions in fine art evolved to encompass applied arts and interior design as well: In 1903, Hoffmann and Koloman Moser founded the Wiener Werkstätte, or "Viennese Workshop," to produce progressive furniture, ceramics, glass and textiles.

This talented collective of Austrian artists, architects and designers most famously created works in the Jugendstil style — the German branch of Western Europe's popular Art Nouveau. Jugendstil is associated with dynamic, rhythmic forms and undulating lines.

On 1stDibs, discover the sophisticated Vienna Secession furniture, art and decorative objects — ranging from watercolor paintings and prints to serveware and seating — that transformed Austria over one hundred years ago and maintain timeless appeal today.

Original Otto Wagner & Kohn Jacob & Josef & Koloman 'Kolo' Moser Ensemble, 1901
Located in Vienna, AT
As pioneer and master of the Modern, Otto Wagner seized the then rather new technique of bending wood for his furniture designs. Occasionally These furniture are attributed to Koloman Moser as well. The design of this Ensemble dated back in 1901. Especially the design of the armrests shows the adventure of the new technique. Wagner first used the stool from this Ensemble for the "Depeschenbüro Die Zeit" Lit.: Giovanni Renzi, „Il mobile moderno“, Silvana Editoriale Spa, Milano, 2008. S.48-49 Eva B. 19th Century Wien Wall Lamp with 7 Lights in Antique Bronze and Crystal
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
This wall lamp is inspired by a chandelier model of Josef Hoffmann (architect and designer member of the Viennese Secession). Indeed, the lower part of the sconce, composed of three palm leaves adorned with drops, is close to that of the Austrian architect’s successful model. However, the composition is more complex than its original. A light plate, whose ornaments recall the eighteenth century, completes the stage of palms, itself topped by a shell. The latter opens on three floors in half-crown, decorated with drops. These crowns are reminiscent of the chandeliers of Central European countries (one thinks of the chandelier of Werner and Mieth in the Russian taste, dating from the nineteenth century and preserved in the Mathieu Museum), as well as the edges of the shell take the form of lava flow. Skillfully mixing these three parts, this wall lamp offers a very soft light, thanks to the crystal drops acting as a louver. We have one wall lamp...
