Brazilian Center Tables

BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Find a collection of vintage Brazilian furniture on 1stDibs that includes chairssofastables and more.

Rosewood and Marble Coffee Table, Unknown Designer, Mid-Century Brazilian, 1960s
By Celina Decoracoes
Located in New York, NY
This round coffee table was produced in the 1960s, with both feet and top cross-shaped. This practical four-seat dining table features very well-built fittings, as the cross supports the top and the four charming wood pieces that touch the floor. This coffee table's sbase in trosewood has gorgeous natural tones and veins, valuing the design's creation. This model is very similar to the Alex coffee table, by Sergio Rodrigues (1927-2014), which was also produced with a marble. This piece is in very good vintage condition. Wood restoration service...

Brazilian Modern Coffee Table in Hardwood & Marble, Jean Gillon, 1968, Brazil
By Jean Gillon
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this Mid-Century Modern Coffee Table, in solid Rosewood and Marble designed by Jean Gillon in the 60s is nothing less than spectacular! What makes this coffee table so special is the sleek design iconic from Jean Gillon. The “stake” shape of the legs is seen in many of Gillon’s pieces, specially in the Rodeio collection. Attached images from Jean Gillons book featuring the iconic "Rodeio" collection including stools, coffee table, armchairs and sofa. This coffee table is so awesome that it looks fantastic in any furniture set we match it with. Currently the coffee table is showcased with a “Concha” set (Sofa, Armchairs) from Joaquim Tenreiro and it looks stellar. This piece would look incredible in any modern, Mid-Century Modern or contemporary environment. This piece would also look wonderful in a boho chic, or Hollywood Regency style home. Jean Gillon was a Brazilian furniture designer born in Romania in 1919. He studied at the Architecture and fine arts Schools at the National University. He founded his first company Fábrica de Móveis Cidam in 1961 after emigrating to São Paulo, Brazil in 1956. Gillon's firm designed many luxury hotels throughout Brazil and homes and stores. He was known for his one of a kind tapestries. His second furniture company, WoodArt, produced full lines of Brazilian rosewood furniture...

Hardwood and Metal Outdoor Center Table, Minimalist Design
By SIMONINI
Located in Vila Cordeiro, São Paulo
This center table is made in a minimalist design for outdoor use. This low center table or coffee table is part of the Skyfolding In-Outdoor collection, the collection concept is inspired by the Asian building scaffoldings, where a structure is composed by bamboo sticks crossed to create this inspiring and fascinating structures. We combined elements of this structures and also references from the ballet stretching bars that often combine metal and wood, this combo is the concept very soul. All the figurative elements are abstracted in the design process to extract the precise best of each world, and by then resulting in a collection of delicate objects, cult and curated to the minimum details, in design and engineering. The collection is composed by outdoor net, batyline or plastic, in a portion leaving room to a more soft design approach that is harmonious, this elements are combined to a structure made of wood and metal that transcends to tech and soft, a paradigm of past, present and future that invite all the viewers to contemplate and reflect in this philosophical matters in a tactile and visual way. Resulting is a essential and timeless set of objects designed for the modern lifestyle that permit infinite compositions indoors or outdoors that will participate in lives for a lifetime like a breeze full of “zen” elements and energy. Award winner of the biggest South American design...

Beijú Center Table: handcrafted in Brazil with beads and Cabreúva wood
By Maria Fernanda Paes de Barros
Located in Jundiaí, SP
The Beiju Center Table is tribute to Mehinaku indigenous women. Made in Cabreúva wood it receives tiny beads necklaces made by them to be used in the traditional rituals of their people, in the Xingu Indigenous Territory, Mato Grosso, Brazil. All Mehinaku traditions move me. The exchange system called Moitará, through which exchanges between villages are made, allows women to purchase ceramic pieces that are placed over the fire, supported on three bricks, to prepare their typical food, the cassava beiju. This moment was also honored at Beiju Center Table, with its top carved in solid cabreuva balanced on "wood bricks", It is part of Yankatu's Xingu collection...
