About the Item

This unique Charlotte Perriand console bar top, crafted in the 1970s, is an exquisite piece of design from the renowned French ski resort Les Arcs 1800. Designed originally for the ‘Les Arandelieres’ residence, this model showcases Perriand’s distinct design philosophy, combining rustic charm with refined functionality. The console top features an impressive 6 cm thick slab of solid pine wood, highlighting a stunning wood grain and a rich, original patina that reflects the era’s aesthetic. Its free-form, skewed front adds an organic touch, while visible woodworking connections speak to its artisanal craftsmanship. The console is mounted to the wall with two black lacquered metal supports, inspired by the metal base design used in Les Arcs tables but custom-made to support this unique top. Positioned slightly away from the wall, it creates a subtle floating effect that accentuates the console’s shape. This versatile piece can serve as both a wall console or a writing desk, adapting effortlessly to various interiors. It holds a strong provenance from Les Arandelieres residence in the Les Arcs 1800 part. This console is in good condition and remains an exceptional example of Perriand’s timeless and functional design. Literature: Charlotte Perriand: Jacques Barsac, Complete Works Volume Vol. 4: 1968-1999. Page 200. Les Arcs, a pioneering ski resort in the French Alps, was developed in the 1960s and 70s, with Charlotte Perriand as the chief designer and architectural visionary. Known for her minimalist and functional style, Perriand brought a revolutionary approach to ski resort design, focusing on sustainable materials, simple forms, and an organic connection with the natural surroundings. Her vision was to create spaces that harmonized with the alpine landscape, offering skiers modern, comfortable, and communal living areas that didn’t detract from the natural beauty of the mountains. The resort’s architecture emphasizes open-plan interiors, large windows, and the extensive use of wood and metal, blending modernist principles with a rustic touch. Les Arcs became a significant example of post-war architectural innovation in France and reflected Perriand’s belief that design should be accessible, livable, and environmentally integrated. Her work at Les Arcs has left a lasting legacy, influencing mountain resort design worldwide and reinforcing her importance as one of the 20th century’s leading figures in modern design.
