Massimo & Lella Vignelli Set of Two Black Saratoga Bar Cabinet by Poltronova

About the Item

Set of two luminous side table/cabinet bar in black lacquered wood, these piece presents two openable opposite doors and inner shelves. Designed by Massimo and Lella Vignelli and produced by Poltronova in the 1960s Massimo Vignelli was a celebrated twentieth century versatile Italian graphic and industrial designer. He worked in several domains of designing, including package design, furniture design, showroom design and warehouse design. He established his own firm, Vignelli Associates, in partnership with his wife. He strictly adopted the Modernists tradition of design in his work and based his artwork on the idea of simplicity which manifested through his use of rudimentary geometric designs. On January 10, 1931, Massimo Vignelli was born in Milan, Italy. He attended an art school, Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, before earning an architecture degree from the Politecnico di Milano, 1953. During the period between 1953 and 1957, he attended the School of Architecture and University of Venice. Early in his professional career, his chief area of expertise was graphic designing for products and corporate identity creation. Also Vignelli tweaked a design for the ‘Fungo’ table lamp by creating a series of lighting fixtures. In the late 1950s, he earned a fellowship to study in the United States at Towle Silversmiths, Massachusetts and the Institute of Design, Chicago. In 1957, he married Lella Vignelli, whom he met at an architecture convention. A few years later, they established their small design studio, the Lella and Massimo Vignelli Office of Design and Architecture, Milan. The studio dealt with designing domestic products, office accessories, graphics and furniture. In 1965, the Vignellis moved to Chicago, US, where they founded Unimark International which specifically focused on corporate graphic designing. It was Vignellis’s innovative idea of introducing the Helvetica typography in visual communication that went viral all over United States. They employed the rudimentary geometric shapes such as cube, pyramid, spheres and cylinders in a variety of product designs. These designs appeared balanced, appealing, and functional. According to the founder of the firm, the designer should be able to design everything from a needle to a whole metropolis. A wide-range of deigning programs was introduced in the company from environmental planning to tableware and packaging showcasing versatile and novel ideas. In 1966, Vignelli expanded his business and launched a branch of Unimark International in New York. Soon it became the largest firm in the world for its expansion into an array of domains and covering variety of lifestyles. The firm takes pride in establishing some of the notable and prestigious corporate identities, including that of American Airlines. Vignelli designed the signage for New York City Subway system and the DC Metro. In 1971, he resigned from the company as it got sidetracked from the vision he created and single-mindedly focused on product marketing rather than the design itself. Subsequently, Vignelli and Lella founded another firm, Vignelli Associates. Once again his firm attracted high-profile clients seeking corporate identity assistance. These top-notch corporations included Knoll, Bloomingdale’s and IBM.

By Poltronova, Mario Ceroli

Set of eight Fratina chairs in pine wood designed by Mario Ceroli in 1972 and produced by Poltronova. Mario Ceroli showed this chair for the first time during the Shakespearean piece of Richard III created by Luca Ronconi of which Mario Ceroli curated the scenography. The Fratina chair is probably the most recognizable and important object of the Mobili della Valle series, where Mario Ceroli began a three-dimensional transposition of the pictorial compositions of Giorgio De Chirico's "Mobili nella Valle". Ceroli started to work on this collection in 1965 recreating three unusually shaped pieces of sculptural wooden furniture...

Corrado Corradi Dell''Acqua Set of Two T12 Montecarlo Tables by Azucena 1949
By Corrado Corradi Dell'acqua, Azucena
Located in Montecatini Terme, IT
A set of two Montecarlo (T12) side tables with a simple and elegant brass structure and tabletops in crystal, they are the perfect companion for any seats, beds, or desks. The brass structure present a pleasant patina due to the age of the tables. Designed by Corrado Corradi dell'Acqua and manufactured by Azucena during the 1950s. Corrado Corradi Dell’Acqua (Milan 1905 – Varese 1982) was a law expert, an amateur writer, and silently became a designer. His dachshund’s name was Azucena, as the gipsy of a Giuseppe Verdi’s opera. After all Maria Callas was hosted after the dress rehearsal of the legendary 1955’s Traviata, at La Scala, that Luchino Visconti built around her Violetta. Azucena was also the name of the company Corradi had started in 1947 with two other young Milanese intellectuals, Luigi Caccia Dominioni and Ignazio Gardella – the last one had already been his schoolmate at the Liceo Berchet, and would have later joined him in many other projects. The premises of his adventure had materialized in two different editions of the Milan Triennial Exhibition. In 1933, Corradi had presented his black nickel and copper bookends, and in 1939 he had exhibited a silver and golden copper tea service wrapped in the coils of a snake. In those objects, the simplicity and the elegance of his future works could be foreseen but not fully recognized. Some years later he would have designed objects such as his lamps made with glass from Milan tramcars, his two-seat sofa for an intimate talk, his saddle-shaped armchairs that forced the body in a perfect posture, his little-tree-shaped photo frame that could be wore as a cameo collier, or his marble ashtray with pestle...
