Rosewood coffee table Arne Jacobsen for St. Catherine’s College Fritz Hansen

About the Item

Rare danish side- or coffee-table in Rosewood designed by Arne Jacobsen. Very nice original state. Arne Jacobsen created the extension of the St. Catherines College of Oxford in 1959 to 1964. Beside the well known Oxford series chairs, he designed also furniture for the dorm rooms: a desk, a chair and a lounge chair combined with a low table, that could also be used with a cushion as a footstool. This is the low table offered here. The furniture designed for the Oxford project has been produced by Fritz Hansen under the name "St Catherines”. Only the Oxford chairs have been produced in bigger numbers and are well known today, the other models have only be distributed in very low numbers. This table is the even rarer rosewood-version and has been sold in Denmark. The label of the furniture shop Central Møbler in Odense (Denmark), where it has been bought when new is still present on the underside of the table. The St. Catherines college is situated towards the east of Oxford, on the bank of the Cherwell river. It’s striking buildings in glass and concrete are a great example of Arne Jacobsen’s architecture. He combines modern materials with a traditional layout. The architecture in this and many other buildings went much further than just the design of the buildings itself, but included furniture, lamps and cutlery among others.
