Mel Ramos’s provocative, humorous paintings mix idealized nude women with the imagery of popular culture—Coca Cola bottles, movie posters, and the like. A prolific artist from his emergence in the 1960s onward, Ramos has often based his nudes on the female celebrities of the day, from Marilyn Monroe to Scarlett Johansson. His style references the sensuality and glossy flatness of pin-ups and Playboy spreads and has drawn the ire of feminists and art critics alike, despite Ramos’s assertion that his works are “apolitical”. Though clearly aligned with Pop art in his appropriation of imagery from mass media and consumer products, Ramos calls his practice rooted in Surrealism and its emphasis on “absurd conjunctions”—in his case, a beautiful nude woman emerging from a Snickers wrapper or lounging seductively in a banana split...

A wonderful, highly engaging large original abstract pastel painting / drawing of three nude female figures by Swiss / American / Californian painter-artist Hans Burkhardt.
This work is hand pencil signed and dated (1967) by the artist.
An original, one-of-a-kind relatively large work by Burkhardt. Would be a great addition to any collection of his work or a stunning stand-alone art accent piece in about any setting. His original female/ women nude works are becoming rare and harder to find.
Hans Burkhardt was born in 1904 in Basel, Switzerland. At the age of 20, he immigrated to New York to work with his father. From 1925 to 1928 he attended the Cooper Union School of the Arts, where he befriended mentor Arshile Gorky and Willem de Kooning—sharing Gorky's studio from 1928 to 1937. In 1937 he moved to Los Angeles, California.
Burkhardt held his first solo exhibition in 1939 at Stendahl Gallery in Los Angeles. In 1945 he had a highly acclaimed solo exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum. Burkhardt spent most of the 1950s working in Mexico. Art critics of the time considered him a "great Mexican master” alongside Orozco, Rivera, and Siqueiros, and Rufino Tamayo admired his work. He returned to Los Angeles in the 1960s to create some of the most powerful examples of Abstract Expressionism of the time. During this time he also became well known for his richly drawn pastel abstractions of the human figure of which this original work certainly qualifies.
He died in Los Angeles in 1994.

In a way, it was almost preordained that her life would be devoted to the crafts. While she hoped to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, financial conditions prevented it. With financial assistance from relatives and friends, she began her art studies at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 1939. Whitcomb recalls that in her third year, in 1941, she took an enameling class. Her instructor taught the cloisonné technique. Ruth Raemisch also used the same facilities, working on her enamels while regular courses were offered. Whitcomb recalls being intrigued by Raemisch’s techniques and wanting to emulate the distinguished German-born artist, whose style was based on the Limoges school of enamel painting. She completed her course work at RISD in 1942 while taking additional classes at the Cambridge School of Art. In 1944 she joined the United States Marine Corps Women’s Reserve at Camp Pendleton...
