About the Item

Decorate a dining room table or an office with this elegant antique French oil on canvas painting. Set in the original carved gilt frame, the art work depicts a pastoral scene with two women by the river surrounded with trees and landscape in the manner of French painter Camille Corot. The canvas is signed Corot on the bottom right in red (see detailed images), and has a plaque reading J.B.C. Corot (1796-1875). The painting is in excellent condition with wonderful colors in the green and blue palette. Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875) was a French landscape and portrait painter as well as a print-maker in etching. He is a pivotal figure in landscape painting and his vast output simultaneously references the Neo-Classical tradition and anticipates the plein-air innovations of Impressionism. Camille Corot was born in Paris in 1796, in a house at 125 Rue du Bac, now demolished. His family were bourgeois people-his father was a wig maker and his mother a milliner-and unlike the experience of some of his artistic colleagues, throughout his life he never felt the want of money, as his parents made good investments and ran their businesses well. After his parents married, they bought the millinery shop where she had worked and he gave up his career as a wig-maker to run the business side of the shop. The store was a famous destination for fashionable Parisians and earned the family an excellent income. Corot was the middle of three children born to the family, who lived above their shop during those years. Measures: 30.75" W x 27" H.

19th Century Framed Landscape Oil Painting Signed L. Dupuy for E. Galien-Laloue
By Eugene Galien-Laloue
Located in Dallas, TX
Decorate a study, living room or den with this beautiful and colorful antique painting! Painted in France circa 1890, the artwork on canvas is set in the original carved gilt wood frame and illustrates a picturesque, countryside scene in rural France with a church and farmhouses in the background, a river on the side and a peasant woman in the foreground; the painting is signed in the lower left corner by the artist, L. Dupuy, one of the pseudonyms of Eugene Galien-Laloue (1854-1941). The 19th century pastoral painting is in excellent condition with rich, realistic colors in a post impressionist style; throughout the painting, the viewer can get a sense of the artist's expertise in the rendering of space, light and a beautifully hazy atmosphere. We thank Mr. Noé Willer for confirming the authenticity of this work, which appears in his archives of the artist. Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941) was a French artist of French-Italian parents. He was a popularizer of landscapes, marine and street scenes, usually those illustrating autumn or winter settings. His paintings of the early 1900s accurately represent the era in which he lived: a happy, bustling Paris during la Belle Époque. His paintings regularly include horse-drawn carriages, trolley cars and its first omnibuses. Galien-Laloue's works are valued not only for their contribution to 20th century art, but for the actual historical content which they document. His work can be seen at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Louvier, Musée des Beaux-Arts, La Rochelle, Mulhouse, France. Some artists or writers are content to have a pseudonym so as to disguise their work. Eugène Galien Laloue was particularly adept at establishing many identities, since over the course of his career he worked under three main pseudonyms: J. Lievin – after a soldier he met during the Franco-Prussian war, E. Galiany – an Italianized version of his own names, and L. Dupuy – after Dupuy Léon who lived in his same area. Even his name “Galien” is questionable, since on occasion he spelled it with one “l” and on his birth certificate...

Antique French Landscape oil painting on canvas, French Barbizon, Gustave Garaud
By Gustave Cesaire Garaud
Located in AIGNAN, FR
ntique landscape oil painting in it's original frame by French artist Gustave Césaire Garaud (1844-1914) An attractive Barbizon School oil painting on stretched canvas. A river scene with a wooded foreground with plenty of animated detail of the river and the small wooden bridge that crosses it. The artist has animated the painting with raised brush strokes and lush hues of greens and lilacs. The canvas is slightly textured. It is signed in the lower right with an annotation, A. F Aberle, my friend since childhood. MORE ABOUT THIS PAINTING: Medium: Oil on stretched canvas Overall size: 13.5ins x 18ins or 34cms x 46cms (approx) including the frame Date: 1880's Condition: The painting is in good antique condition but you should expect imperfections associated with age, in particular, there are two very small areas of missing paint in the tree. The frame has had renovations throughout but it is in a sturdy condition. Signed: Gustave Césaire Garaud (1844-1914) He was a student of François-Louis Français. His first exhibit at the Salon came in 1878, and he would continue to have showings there until his death. In 1881, two of his works, "Bord du Gapeau près de Montrieux" and "Les Pins de Notre-Dame sous Fenouillet", received honorable mention and were purchased by the Musée d'Art de Toulon. In 1889, he was awarded two third-class medals and, in 1893, two second-class medals. He opened a workshop in Paris, dividing his time between painting there, in Provence and in Brittany. He also created some landscapes in Corsica. Although he never became famous, he enjoyed a good reputation among collectors and was able to organize two exhibits of his own, at the Cercle Volney, in 1891 and 1900. In addition to his canvases, he decorated some private buildings. During this time, he travelled widely; especially to what was then French Indochina. Inspired by these travels, he illustrated several books dealing with the Far East, notably L'Indochine française...
