About the Item

Decorate an office or study with this large antique sheep painting. Hand painted on board in Belgium circa 1890, and set in the original thick hand carved giltwood frame, the artwork is signed in the lower left corner by the artist, Charles Warland. The subject matter depicts a tranquil pastoral scene where a shepherd tends to a flock of sheep, accompanied by a dog. The composition captures the calm beauty of rural life, with golden hues suggesting the warmth of a late afternoon. The sky, painted in soft blues and wispy clouds, contrasts beautifully with the lush greenery and warm tones of the trees and landscape. The natural setting, combined with the figures in the background, creates a serene, idyllic atmosphere. The decorative painting is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with great details, including trees and almost two dozen sheep. Charles Warland (1856-1921) was an artist born in Belgium. Warland often painted atmospheric landscapes of this type and he was undoubtedly influenced by his teacher at the Brussels Fine Art Academy, Willem Roelofs (1822–1897). Roelofs was a member of the ‘Hague School’ of artists who believed in working outside and painting how they felt rather than simply what they saw. Later in Warland’s career, he exhibited at the prestigious Exposition Generale des Beaux-Art and he remains a popular artist for collectors of impressionism. Warland died in 1921. 38"W x 29"H

19th Century Dutch Sheep Painting in Carved Gilt Frame Signed Frans Lebret
By Frans Lebret 1
Located in Dallas, TX
Set in the original carved gilt wood frame, this antique oil on canvas was crafted in Europe circa 1860. Signed in the lower right corner by Dutch artist, Frans Lebret, the charming pastoral painting captures a serene interior barn scene filled with rustic warmth and intimate detail. At the center, a group of sheep reclines peacefully on a bed of straw, joined by a rooster and a hen, all softly illuminated by daylight streaming in through an open doorway. To the left, a woman and child stand quietly near a wooden support beam, their presence suggesting a gentle guardianship over the animals. The structure of the barn its beams, rafters, and shadowed recesses are rendered with atmospheric depth, evoking a sense of shelter and tranquility. Outside the barn, a glimpse of tiled rooftops and blue sky connects the calm interior to the rural world beyond. The painting is presented in a lavishly ornate gilded frame, carved with baroque scrolls and acanthus leaves, which enhances its timeless, bucolic character. This work is a tender tribute to the harmony between humans, animals, and agrarian life. The art work is in excellent condition with great details and beautiful pastel colors; it is set in a splendid and elegant gold leaf frame with floral and leaf motifs in high relief. Artist listed in the Benezit. The canvas has been relined. Frans Lebret (1820-1909) was born in Dordrecht and was known for his Dutch landscapes mainly with sheep. Thanks to financial help from his brother Gerrit who had a sugar estate in Java, and his job as a drawing teacher, Frans was able to survive his first years as a painter. Later he became quite successful and was able to live of the sale of his landscape paintings with animals. In 1863, together with his brother Jan Hendrik...
