A very nice and super rare "The Surfer" magazine reprint from 1973 of the original "Surfer Magazine" published in 1960 by surf industry pioneer John Severson. The piece is in good condition with light creasing to cover; stress marks to spine; light foxing and shelf-wear to back cover; all pages / staples are intact and secure. JOHN SEVERSON
John Severson, well known as the creator of the internationally acclaimed SURFER Magazine, grew up surfing off the beaches of Southern California. He began his career as a painter, selling his first works while finishing his Master’s Degree at Long Beach State College.
In the ’50s he became the first person to create a large body of art relating to the Hawaii-California surf culture. Since then he has provided a steady output of oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints.
In 1958, John used his art, photography, and surfing passion to create a popular surf movie series. His films included SURF SAFARI, SURF FEVER, BIG WEDNESDAY, and PACIFIC VIBRATIONS.
Severson's smash hits posters from the ’50s and ’60s, remain collector favorites.
As a surfer, Severson was known for riding big waves, and for his innovative performance style in big surf. In 1961, he won the Peru International Surfing Championships and was a finalist in the U.S. and Hawaiian Championships.
With the founding of SURFER, John’s art focused on the magazine and graphics. His painting “Surf Bebop” was selected as the outstanding cover painting of 1963 by Communication Arts. Surfer

A stunning trompe l'oeil (fool the eye) mid 20th century Italian oil painting by artist Alfano Dardari. This work depicts a beautiful flower in a vase with a perfect little droplet of water resting ever so gently on a petal. The flower in the vase sits atop a shelf upon which a gorgeous butterfly has alighted. Also on the shelf is a gold watch. And do you see a thread through all of this? I do. Mind you, it's my opinion but I'll happily share it with you. Memento Mori. Instead of defining it for you, I'll offer this description from the Tate in London: "Memento mori is a Latin phrase meaning ‘remember you must die’. A basic memento mori painting would be a portrait with a skull but other symbols commonly found are hour glasses or clocks, extinguished or guttering candles, fruit, and flowers. Closely related to the memento mori picture is the vanitas still life. In addition to the symbols of mortality these may include other symbols such as musical instruments, wine and books to remind us explicitly of the vanity (in the sense of worthlessness) of worldly pleasures and goods. A large and beautiful three quarter length portrait of a partly seated lady her hat over one arm holding a bouquet of flowers, the other arm held upward holding a branch of a tree. This original oil on canvas by the British artist Laurence Koe, (1863-1913), is signed on the lower right and dated 1905.
Lawrence E. Koe was a portrait painter and sculptor. He is listed as living in Brighton when he first exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1891, but by 1894 he had moved to London where he appears to have settled for the remainder of his life. Koe exhibited widely; over twenty times at The Royal Academy, but also at the R.O.I, The Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Most of his exhibited works were portraits, and among his sitters were the wives of fellow artists Harold Speed RP (1872-1957) and Harold Piffard (fl. 1895-1899). In 1896 Koe exhibited “Venus and Tännhauser” at the Royal Academy, now in the permanent collection in the Brighton Museum and Art and he showed a painting of Sappho two years later. He clearly shows the influence of other artists working at the same time, notably Singer Sargent, Arthur Hacker RA (1858-1919) and Herbert James Draper...
