Starlings in a Winter Landscape by British artist Raymond C. Boothe (1929-2015). Oil on canvas in a hand carved custom frame. Framed the dimensions are 35" wide, 29.38" high and 2.5 inches deep. The canvas measures 24" wide and 18.75" high. Boothe, a Leeds artist, is known as of one of Britain's most accomplished botanical, wildlife and natural history artists. He was represented by the Fine Art Society for 50 years, where he had eight exhibitions. This painting has been in a private collection for the past 30/40 years and was purchased from the art dealer Henri Tiercet.
Despite rarely leaving his native Yorkshire, Booth developed an international reputation as a leading botanical and natural history artist. He Spent much of his career in his private studio at home in Alwoodley – an 'inner sanctuary', which no one besides the artist was permitted to enter. Booth's meticulous rendering of wildlife, woodlands, meadows and heathland found admiration far beyond the bounds of his beloved Adel Woods, where he spent much of his time studying and refining his technique, even 'sleeping under hedgerows', remembers Peyton. A plantsman as well as an artist, Booth would cultivate flowers, plants and botanical specimens at home in the garden before painting them in the studio. It was through this extensive and painstaking process that Booth developed an expert knowledge of his subject, a defining feature of his work.

In this pair of early Edo period Japanese screens a group of tigers prowl in a bamboo grove whipped with fierce wind, while a dragon claws through clouds and mist. The dragon embodies elemental qualities - looming out of the mist, the coils of its body disappearing in the clouds. The dragon is calling for rain, symbolizing spring which is considered the fountain of life. On the other side, the tigers calls for the wind, symbolizing autumn which is considered the end of life. Tigers were familiar motifs within Japanese art from ancient times though the animals were imaginary to the people in the 17th century. While dragons and tigers are usually associated as sacred and ferocious, in this painting, both animals have rather amusing expressions. The tigers appear to glare at the dragon with cat-like eyes, and the look on the swirling dragon’s face appears almost affectionate - lending a playful flair to an otherwise magnificent theme.
The tiger and dragon are cosmological symbols of the balancing forces in the world. Screens such as this were originally meant to express the fluctuating nature of the world. For Japanese in the early Edo period, they likely suggested the powers of the cosmos. In Japan the tiger and dragon motif was originally absorbed into the circles of Zen monasteries before spreading into the secular world. The theme especially appealed to the military classes with the Kano school, the official painters to the Shogun and the samurai, being the leading contributors. The painter of this pair of screens, Kaiho Yusetsu (1598-1677), was closely patronized by the third Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. In his later years he worked with Kano school artists...

Joseph Stevens is the older brother of the very well-known artist Alfred Stevens. In the book 'The Belgian Art Book' by J. de Geest, it is written that Joseph Stevens has given a new dimension to painting animals. Joseph Stevens is an early representative of realism and social art. While Eugene Verboeckhoven has royal dogs pose on a beautifully embroidered cushion, Joseph Stevens already has an eye for the dark side of animal existence: exploitation by man, who in turn is a victim of society. His first successful painting, Brussels in the morning, shows how miserable dogs and poor people suffer the same fate. In the Sandman, Stevens shows a joint effort of man and dog, in which the viewer cannot ignore the social conditions: exhausting labor at dawn in some suburb. The gray sky and monochromy of the suburb add to the sinister atmosphere. Joseph Stevens was one of the first artists to take the urban proletariat as his subject. Stevens enjoys a very high reputation in his Parisian years. His brother Alfred writes: 'I am of this time, but you, Joseph, you are of the race, and thus you are of all times.' French critics agree. Stevens' works are a source of inspiration for the literature of the time. For example, Beaudelaire writes a poem about Stevens' dogs.

Stevens was a painter, etcher and engraver. Brother of the gifted painter Afred Stevens. Education at the Academy in Brussels (1834-1835). Debuted at the Salon in Brussels in 1842. Continued his career in Paris in 1852. He was primarily the painter of canvases depicting domestic animals (dogs, monkeys, horses), sometimes in curious, even idiosyncratic situations, and far from romanticism. This realism, of which he was one of the pioneers, earned him the interest of critics and intellectuals.
His approach was defined by this contemporary realism that eschewed idealized depictions of animals as heroic emblems of nobility. Rather, Stevens emphasized the ordinary animals of everyday life, with a particular focus on working dogs, stray dogs and all of the mutts that wandered the streets of Brussels. Henry or Henri Campotosto was born in Brussels in 1833. He studied in Brussels at the Royal Academy des Beaux-Arts and painted some artworks with Eugène Verboeckhoven (Belgium, 1798-1881). He received a 1st Class Medal at the Academy of Brussels and an honorable mention at the Paris Exhibition of 1860. In 1871 he moved to London with his family and remained there for life. He exhibited his work at the Royal Academy Exhibition until 1874 and at the Suffolk Street Gallery from 1878. In 1880 he took part in the Berlin Academy Exhibition. His daughter Octavia also became a painter, visited Italy, and showed her paintings at the Royal Academy from 1871 to 1874. Henri Campotosto died in London in 1910.

Our very large, full-length portrait of a distinguished Japanese lady in kimono was painted by Greta Kempton (Austrian-American, 1903-1991), famous for her portraiture and role as the official White House painter under President Harry S. Truman. This oil on canvas, signed lower left, measures 42 by 80 inches and is mounted in a lovely cassetta frame with gilt designs measuring 52.5 by 90.5 inches (4' 4.5" by 7' 6.5")
Known as "America's Court Painter", Kempton painted portraits of the Truman family and entire White House cabinet. She enjoyed a lengthy career as a portraitist to important figures from American politics, business and entertainment, plus everyday people from a range of cultures and communities. In 1949 the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC held a one-woman exhibition of her paintings. And in 1987 the Harry S.
