About the Item

This pale, almost ghostly painting by John Winters depicts a tall, lithe young man with a yellow swimsuit and towel on the beach along Lake Michigan in Chicago, with two other figures under a sheltering canopy to one side. The figure and the setting are all painted in an antiqued, rich brown, with hints of cloud overhead and the sea beyond in flecks of white and blue. The artist used milk-based casein paint, which is a challenging medium to master: water-soluble when applied, but drying to a durable finish. Winters was an integral part of the Chicago art scene in the 1930s and 1940s, and was the administrator for the WPA Illinois Art Project for several years. He painted murals -- such as “Lincoln at New Salem” in the Petersburg, Illinois post office -- and later moved to the Philadelphia area to serve as the chief artist and display director for the famed John Wanamaker department store. The casein is painted on Masonite. It retains its original, 1940s frame with a weathered paint finish.
