A Reproduction 1932 – 33 ‘Bodyline Tour’ signed Sir Donald Bradman
Located in Pewsey, GB
A reproduction imprint of the Iconic 1932 – 33 ‘Bodyline Tour’ poster specially signed by Sir Donald Bradman This reproduction imprint of the iconic travel poster created for the 1932-33 ‘bodyline’ Ashes series entitled ‘Go Out to Australia for the Test Matches September 1932- March 33’ has been specially signed by the all-time greatest batsman, Sir Donald Bradman towards the centre of its image. The original poster was published by Troedel and Cooper Pty Ltd Melb. It was reproduced with permission of the Percy Trompf Estate and published by Post-Age Pty Lid (Sydney). Dimensions: Height - 89 cm Width - 63.5 cm Condition – Very Good This poster was created by Percival Alfred Trompf (1902 – 1964). Trompf was an Australian commercial artist best known for his travel posters, books, advertising hoardings and pamphlets promoting the nation’s tourist industry and Australian and international corporations and companies. His colour lithography was recognised as distinctive during his career and since, Art Decoin style, and innovative in its use of flat colour. Sir Donald George Bradman (27 August 1908 – 25 February 2001) known as Don Bradman and nicknamed ‘The Don’ was an Australian international cricketer who was regarded as the greatest batsman of all time. His career Test batting average of 99.94 collected over 52 matches is considered by some commentators to be the greatest achievement by any sportsman in any major sport. Before the 1932-33 Ashes tour, Douglas Jardine, the captain of England noted that Bradman was uncomfortable facing deliveries higher than usual at a faster pace, having observed him to step back consistently out of the line of the ball. Jardine felt that Bradman was nervous about standing his ground against intimidatory bowling, contrary to orthodox batting technique and decided that the bodyline bowling tactic should be used against him and other top batsmen in forthcoming test matches. Bodyline bowling was a cricketing tactic devised by English cricket team for their 1932-33 Ashes tour to Australia to counter the extraordinary batting skills and prowess of Australia’s leading batsman, Donald ‘Don’ Bradman and curb his scoring. A bodyline delivery was one in which the cricket ball crick was bowled at pace, aimed at the body of the batsman in the expectation that when he defended himself with his bat, a resulting deflection could be caught by one of several fielders placed close on the leg side. At that time, no helmets or upper body protective gear was worn, and critics of the tactic, both in Australia and England, considered it intimidating, overly aggressive, physically threatening and unfair, in a game that was traditionally supposed to uphold traditions of sportsmanship. Over time, several of the Laws of Cricket were changed to render the bodyline tactic less effective and increase player safety. This iconic poster reported to have been signed by The Don as a special gesture for an Australian sports journalist ranks as a unique item of cricket memorabilia...

Original Barcelona 1992 Olympic Poster by Antonio Saura for the XXV Olympiad
By Antonio Saura
Located in London, GB
He began painting and writing in 1947 in Madrid while suffering from tuberculosis, having already been confined to his bed for five years. In his beginnings he created numerous drawings and paintings with a dreamlike surrealist character that most often represented imaginary landscapes, employing a flat smooth treatment that offers a rich palette of colors. He claimed Hans Arp and Yves Tanguy as his artistic influences. He stayed in Paris in 1952 and in 1954–1955 during which he met Benjamin Péret and associated with the Surrealists, although he soon parted with the group, joining instead the company of his friend the painter Simon Hantaï. Using the technique of scraping, he adopted a gestural style and created an abstract type of painting, still very colorful with an organic, aleatory design. The first appearances in his work of forms that will soon become archetypes of the female body or the human figure occur in the mid-1950s. Starting in 1956 Saura tackled the register of what will prove to be his greatest works: women, nudes, self-portraits, shrouds and crucifixions, which he painted on both canvas and paper. In 1957 in Madrid he founded the El Paso Group and served as its director until it broke up in 1960. During this period Saura met Michel Tapié. During the 1950s he had his first solo exhibition at the Rodolphe Stadler Gallery in Paris, where he regularly exhibited throughout his life. Stadler introduced him to Otto van de Loo in Munich and Pierre Matisse in New York City, both of whom exhibited his work and represented him, and eventually his paintings were collected by major museums. Limiting his palette to blacks, grays and browns, Saura asserted a personal style that was independent of the movements and trends of his generation. His work followed in the tradition of Velasquez and Goya. Starting in 1959 he began creating a prolific body of works in print, illustrating numerous books including Cervantes's Don Quijote, Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, Nöstlinger's adaptation of Pinocchio, Kafka’s Tagebücher, Quevedo’s Three Visions, and many others. In 1960 Saura began creating sculptures made of welded metal elements which represented the human figure, characters and crucifixions. In 1967 he settled permanently in Paris, and joined the opposition to Francoist Spain. In France he participated in numerous debates and controversies in the fields of politics, aesthetics and artistic creation. He also broadened his thematic and pictorial register. Along with his Femmefauteuil (literally "Womanarmchair"), he also worked on the series "Imaginary Portraits",and Goya’s Dog...

Antique and Vintage Posters

Add a welcome personal touch to your space and tie your distinctive interior scheme together by introducing antique and vintage posters to any and every room of your home.

In the late 19th century, following the advent of text-heavy posters printed from woodblocks for use in taverns and shop windows, hand-drawn poster art had become commonplace in regions such as France, England and the United States. Well-known illustrators were commissioned to produce decorative posters to advertise political campaigns, theatrical events, books, household goods and other items. Early poster artists used a printmaking technique called lithography, which sees drawings or paintings created on a stone (or metal) surface with an oil-based substance, such as a greasy crayon or tusche (an oily wash). The image is eventually affixed to the surface by means of a chemical reaction, and ink adheres to certain sections of the surface while non–image areas are made to repel the ink.

If you wanted a color lithograph in the early days, the number of stones prepared had to match the number of colors you commissioned for the poster. French painter Jules Chéret, widely known as the father of the modern poster, designed some of history's most popular lithographic posters that featured color. Today, Chéret’s art is highly collectible, along with original works by Czech painter and decorative artist Alphonse Mucha, whose posters advertising theatrical productions helped define Art Nouveau.

Over time, poster artists transitioned to more advanced techniques. Using silkscreens, woodblocks and photolithography, painters and illustrators printed larger quantities at a faster rate.

If you’ve finally tracked down that vintage movie poster, mid-century modern promotional travel poster or other work and you’re looking to find out if it is valuable, distinguishing between an original poster and a reproduction can be complicated. A professional appraiser can work with you on factors such as rarity, assessing the physical condition of your poster and authenticating your piece. For now, take care of your new acquisition because conserving posters is essential in helping them retain their value. A practical conservation method is to have the work mounted on archival, acid-free paper and thin artist’s canvas, then enclosing it in a sturdy frame. (And here is a primer on how to hang wall art, be it arranged gallery-style or otherwise.)

On 1stDibs, find all kinds of posters for your home today.
