19th C., Vanity Fair Framed Chromolithographs of Gentlemen Ex. Christie's, 12
Located in Morristown, NJ
[English Gentlemen], from Vanity Fair twelve chromolithographs, on wove papers. Printed by Vincent Brooks Day & Son., with various dates from 1875 to 1897. Eight are by Spy, two are by Ape, one by "T" and one by Lib. Professionally framed with black and gilt frames and beige silk mats, with margins, apparently in excellent condition, not examined out of the frames. Titles comprise: "Accrington", June 11, 1892, "Newcastle Upon Tyne" July 18, 1893, "A New Peer", October 5, 1878, "South Bucks", June 4, 1896, "South Kensington", September 2, 1897, "Lord Salisbury's Manners", July 13, 1893, "The Blister", August 4, 1888, "A Postmaster General", April 30, 1892, "Sir James Miller", September 6, 1890, "Sol", October 28, 1897, "A Young Man" September 11, 1875, and "A Naturalist", September 9, 1882. Vanity Fair was a weekly magazine published in London, founded & edited by Thomas Gibson Bowles. His aim was to expose to contemporary vanities of Victorian society. From 1868 to 1914, full page colour lithographs appeared in most weekly issues, frequently lampooning or lauding their subjects which included artists, athletes, royalty, politicians, scientists, authors, actors, sportsmen, lawyers, diplomats, soldiers, clergy, scholars and other celebrities of the day - mostly British, but also many other internationally significant personalities. Over 2,300 of these colour cartoons were printed, and they are considered the chief cultural legacy of the magazine, forming a pictorial record of many of the most significant public figures of the period. They are renowned throughout the world and highly collectible and recognisable. Famous artists contributed to Vanity Fair, typically under pen names. The best remembered today is Leslie Ward (1851-1922), who signed his works as "Spy", and whose caricatures account for well over half of those featured in Vanity Fair. So famous have these fabulous prints become, Vanity Fair caricatures today often are referred to simply as "Spy Cartoons...

"Hoylake - Punch Bowl Hole" by James Michael Brown, Antique Golf Print, 1911
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is a photogravure by James Michael Brown entitled "Hoylake-Punch Bowl Hole." The print depicts a 1910 foursomes match on the course, annotated in the bottom border "Mr. John Graham, Jnr., Mr. C.E. Dick, Mr. John Ball Amateur Champion, 1910, Mr. H.H. Hilton." The photogravure was published in the Life Association of Scotland calendar for that year. James Michael Brown (1853-1947) was an accomplished Scottish water-colorist, famous for his golfing scenes of British and Scottish courses, competitions, and players. Brown often had famous golfers of the time sit for him during competitions and he used these studies to help him later reproduce accurate likenesses of the players in his paintings. A keen golfer himself, Brown was a founder member of Mortonhall Golf Club in Edinburgh, where he was introduced to fellow member Dr. J. Turnbull Smith, the manager of the Life Association of Scotland. The Life Association of Scotland was established in Edinburgh, in 1838. It later formed the Insurance and Banking Golf Club, which then became the Duddingston Golf Club. In 1898, to mark the opening of the extended Club House, Smith commissioned Brown to paint a scene from an exhibition golf match at the Club. Brown's painting was then printed as the centerpiece of the 1899 Life Association of Scotland calendar. Although expensive to commission and publish, The Life Association of Scotland board justified the expense of the calendar by stating, “it must surely be the aim and desire of a Life Assurance Association to prolong the lives of those who take out policies with them and what sport is there that can compare with golf as a cure for all the ills that flesh is heir to…” The calendar was a great marketing and advertising success. As a result, Brown was then commissioned to paint an annual golfing picture for the club. Prints were made of the originals and issued in the calendar for each year. Brown painted 26 paintings for the Life Association and these all adorned the walls of the Edinburgh head office for many years. The paintings portray not only Lloyd George, the former Prime Minister at Walton Heath, but also a host of famous golfing personalities like Old Tom Morris, Harry Vardon, James Braid...

The Woman and the Peacock Lithograph by Mr. Blackwell 114/250
Located in Pasadena, CA
Utilizing the peacock as an emblematic Art Nouveau animal, a favorite of early 20th-century illustrators and designers, Mr. Blackwell, who was born in 1925, delivers a powerfully aesthetic scene between a woman and a peacock in this lithograph, paying homage to both Art Nouveau and Art Deco. He was among others an American fashion critic, television/radio personality, and fashion designer. We can imagine that this drawing was a study for a dress paying homage to the myth and quintessence of the beauty found within peacock feathers. Like any artist, there is a story, structure, composition, and arrangement of the woman and the peacock, creating an iridescent visual of blue, green, and yellow, a dialogue between forms, curves, and lines. It is said that the Eye on the bird’s feathers reminds us that God is always watching. The off-white background is sober, crossed by two simple circular colored shapes, in the lower part. The two subjects initially appear as one entity, but as we move into the scene, we see that the woman is holding the peacock under her arm as one might hold an accessory. Then very quickly, it appears as the main figure, taking over the entire narrative rather than an accessory or a secondary figure. The peacock's regal posture, with its unfurled feathers, contrasts with the woman's near imbalance, almost as if she was fainting. It could also be interpreted as an intimate and seductive dance, where the two subjects come together as one to pay homage to a poetic and metaphorical world where aesthetics, fashion, and onirism converge. Did you know that peacocks use...

Antique and Vintage Prints for Wall Decor

Prints are works of art produced in multiple editions. Though several copies of a specific artwork can exist, collectors consider antique and vintage prints originals when they have been manually created by the artist or are “impressions” that are part of the artist’s intent for the work.

Modern artists use a range of printmaking techniques to produce different types of prints such as relief, intaglio and planographic. Relief prints are created by cutting away a printing surface to leave only a design. Ink or paint is applied to the raised parts of the surface, and it is used to stamp or press the design onto paper or another surface. Relief prints include woodcuts, linocuts and engravings.

Intaglio prints are the opposite of relief prints in that they are incised into the printing surface. The artist cuts the design into a block, plate or other material and then coats it with ink before wiping off the surface and transferring the design to paper through tremendous pressure. Intaglio prints have plate marks showing the impression of the original block or plate as it was pressed onto the paper.

Artists create planographic prints by drawing a design on a stone or metal plate using a grease crayon. The plate is washed with water, then ink is spread over the plate and it adheres to the grease markings. The image is then stamped on paper to make prints.

All of these printmaking methods have an intricate process, although each can usually transfer only one color of ink. Artists use separate plates or blocks for multiple colors, and together these create one finished work of art.

Find prints ranging from the 18th- and 19th-century bird illustrations by J.C. Sepp to mid-century modern prints, as well as numerous other antique and vintage prints at 1stDibs. Browse the collection today and read about how to arrange wall art in your space.
