Set of 9 Oban Tate-e Japanese prints from the 19th century

About the Item

Long polyptych of 9 oban tate-e prints, illustrating the procession of Emperor Mutsuhito (Meiji) entering, in September 1869, his new capital, the former Edo, renamed Tôkyô "Capital of the East". Signed by Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) and his student, Yoshikage, who would have done the background. Publisher: Maruya Jinpachi. Circa: 1880 The procession crosses the Kyôbashi, (Kyô bridge), where the emperor's palanquin stands, preceded by those of his wives and concubines, and by notables and soldiers, advancing along Nakabashi avenue and passing the white milestone marking the city limits, while at the rear, marching along Ginza avenue, the staff of the new Meiji army. Frame size: 234cm x 53cm. Dim complete print: 217cm x 37cm - each sheet 25cm wide.
