Vintage American hand hooked rug in a stripe pattern handcrafted in the 4th quarter of the 1800s in the New England Area of the United States. The handwoven hooked rug has a series of slanted stripes in various brilliant colors. The material in the body is rag material that has been cut into narrow pieces and used in the body of the rug. The use of special design and the brilliant colors makes this truly an artistic piece wonderful to be used as a wall tapestry.
The tradition of Hooked Rug started in New England. “Hooking” is the term used to describe the technique of hand crafting these rugs started as a hobby for the farmers in the long and dark cold winter nights of North East States in the US in the early 1800s. Hooked rugs were made as functional pieces for the home either as a table decoration or a wall art. Antique Hooked Rugs are a combination of Folk Art Creativity and Simplicity. A 19th century Persian Baluch tribal soumak double saddlebag. The front of the bag has a beautiful geometric design in a green/blue color set on a yellow background. The variation in color in the green/blue design is very beautiful. The Baluch double saddlebags have a flatwoven kilim in a rich brown and rust red color.
This complete saddlebag is also known as “khorjin” in Persian, or a double bag set. These bags are renowned for their beautiful colors and design which is the result of using fine wool for both pile and the foundation of the rugs and the use of organic vegetable dyes. One usually sees only one of the panels but this piece has both side panels and the banded design kilim which forms the back of the bag. The saddlebags were used by tribes to move their household items from one location to another from their seasonal moves.

Woven wall hangings haven’t consistently enjoyed the popularity or earned the highbrow status that other types of wall decorations have over the years, at least not since the 1970s, which was somewhat of a heyday for tapestries. “We are drawn to texture in environments, and we see tapestries as a subtle layer of soft ornament,” says Lauren Larson of the New York design duo Material Lust. Indeed, and a lot of opportunity comes along when decorating with this distinctive brand of soft ornament.
Think of wall hangings as paintings created by hand with fabric instead of oil or watercolors. If you’re not simply securing your treasure to a wall with nails, pushpins or Velcro, tapestries can be stretched over a frame, used to create a canopy in a cozy living-room corner, hung from a rod or placed inside a shadowbox. And because this kind of textile art is hundreds of years old, options abound with respect to subjects and designs.
For richly detailed depictions of landscapes and garden scenes, look to antique Chinese tapestries and Japanese tapestries. Aubusson tapestries are ornate wall hangings manufactured in central France that are also characterized by romantic portrayals of nature. For weavers of mid-century modern tapestries, as well as those working in textile arts today, the styles and subject matter are too numerous to mention, with artists exploring experimental shapes, bold colors and provocative abstract designs.
