Art Nouveau Bracelets

ART NOUVEAU STYLE

Art Nouveau — generally considered to have begun in the late 1800s and ended with the start of World War I — was a movement in the decorative arts that drew inspiration from natural forms, such as trees, flowers and, of course, the human figure. The three main themes present in Art Nouveau jewelry and watches were flora, fauna and women.

Art Nouveau, which reached its pinnacle in the year 1900, spawned from artists who rejected the historicism of their predecessors to create an entirely new visual vocabulary. As compared to Art Deco jewelry’s geometric patterns and sharp lines, the extravagant style of antique Art Nouveau jewelry is characterized by curvilinear forms and whiplash lines, vibrant materials and dramatic imagery.

The first art and design movement of the 20th century, Art Nouveau was also a reaction against the Industrial Revolution, and took its inspiration from the theories of the Symbolists, the art of the Pre-Raphaelites, the ideas of John Ruskin and his follower William Morris and, most importantly Japanese crafts. (The country was a fertile ground for inspiration after it was opened to the West in 1854.) The Art Nouveau style touched all manners of the arts, including the most exultant jewelry.

Nature was a favorite muse for artists going back to the 18th and 19th centuries, but in the hands of 20th-century artists, it was depicted in new ways. For example, a withering flower was considered just as beautiful as one in full bloom. Winged creatures, such as insects and birds, were also a popular subject. Dragonflies and butterflies were particular favorites because they morphed so dramatically in different life stages.

This was also a reference to women, whose role in society was evolving. It was not uncommon to see a piece of jewelry that would at once reference a woman as a winged creature (think René Lalique’s famous Dragonfly brooch, circa 1897–98, at the Gulbenkian Collection in Lisbon). However, just as women’s roles were ambiguous, so was their image, as the femmes nouvelle were simultaneously eroticized and romanticized.

In addition to Lalique, vital figures in Art Nouveau jewelry included Louis Comfort Tiffany in the United States, Vladimir Soloviev, who designed jewelry for Peter Carl Fabergé in Russia, Fuset Grau of Spain, Karl Rothmuller of Germany and Philippe Wolfers of Belgium.

Art Nouveau jewelers used every “canvas” imaginable, looking beyond brooches and necklaces to belt buckles, fans, tiaras, dog collars (a type of choker necklace), pocket watches, corsages and hair combs. Multicolored gems and enamel could complete this vision better than diamonds. Jewelers also favored pearls, particularly baroque pearls, for their large size and irregular shape. However, opal was the most popular stone — its iridescence harmonized perfectly with the enamel, and it could be carved into any shape. Art Nouveau jewelry was primarily set in yellow gold.

Georg Jensen 1918 Kristian Mohl-Hansen Rare Art Nouveau Bracelet In 925 Sterling
Located in Miami, FL
Art nouveau bracelet designed by Kristian Mohl-Hansen for Georg Jensen. This is one of the most early and iconic bracelet, created in Copenhagen Denmark by the silversmith designer Kristian Mohl-Hansen for the Georg Jensen company, back in the 1918. This bracelet has been crafted in the art nouveau style with several doves in solid .925/.999 sterling silver. This is the old model fitted with the push boxed lock and the hinged slash for extra safety. Weight: 42.80 Grams, (27.43 Dwt). Size: 7.5 Inches (19 Cm). Measurements: The width is 24 mm (0.97 Inch). Hallmarks Stamped with the post 1945 maker's mark, the mark for the assay of the silver and signed, "GEORG JENSEN STERLING DENMARK 14". Kristian Mohl-Hansen He was born in 1876, Kristian Mohl-Hansen was a diverse artist who influenced early and mid-1900 Danish designs. Having studied art formally, more specifically painting, in his formative years, Mohl-Hansen worked as a freelance artist in diverse areas, including textiles and jewelry. According to "Georg Jensen Jewelry," by Anscombe, Gelfer-Jorgensen, Greenbaum, and Soro, Yale University Press, 2005, Mohl-Hansen never worked directly for the Georg Jensen Company. Instead, he was paid for his sketches, which Georg Jensen transformed into fine silver jewelry. Kristian Mohl-Hansen is the designer for one of Georg Jensen's most well-known designs that depicts the side view of a dove surrounded by a round wreath. Mr. Mohl-Hansen passed away in 1962. Georg Jensen Georg Jensen is the most famous Danish silversmith and jewelry designer that ever lived. He is world-renowned for his refined and intricate mastery. The simple elegance of his works and the emphasis on fine craftsmanship, the hallmarks of Georg Jensen products, are recognized around the world. Many of Georg Jensen's jewelry pieces are true works of art, honored to this day. He was one of the greatest representatives of the artistic movement known as "Art Nouveau". Jensen made his first piece of jewelry in 1899, a silver and silver and gilt "Adam and Eve" belt buckle. In 1901, Jensen abandoned ceramics and began again as a silversmith and designer with the master, Mogens Ballin. This led Jensen to make a landmark decision, when in 1904, he risked what small capital he had and opened his own little silversmith at 36 Bredgade in Copenhagen. Jensen's training in metalsmithing along with his education in the fine arts allowed him to combine the two disciplines and revive the tradition of the artist craftsman. Soon, the beauty and quality of his Art Nouveau creations caught the eye of the public and his success was assured. The Copenhagen quarters were greatly expanded and before the end of the 1920s, Jensen had opened retail in Berlin (1909), London (1921), and New York City (1924). The New York retail store, Georg Jensen Inc. (New York, NY), was founded and operated independently as a family business by Frederik Lunning...
