Art Deco Brooches

ART DECO STYLE

Fascination with the Jazz Age is endless, and even today jewelry designers continue to be inspired by authentic Art Deco jewelry and watches.

The Art Deco period, encompassing the 1920s and ’30s, ushered in a very distinct look in the design of jewelry. There were many influences on the jewelry of the era that actually began to take shape prior to the 1920s. In 1909, Serge Diaghilev brought the Ballet Russes to Paris, and women went wild for the company’s exotic and vibrant costumes It’s no wonder, then, that jade, lapis lazuli, coral, turquoise and other bright gemstones became all the rage. There already existed a fascination with the East, particularly China and Japan, and motifs consisting of fans and masks started to show up in Art Deco jewelry.

However, the event that had the greatest influence on Deco was the excavation of the tomb of King Tut in 1922. When the world saw what was hidden in Tut’s burial chamber, it sent just about everyone into a frenzy. Pierre Cartier wrote in 1923 that “the discovery of the tomb will bring some sweeping changes in fashion jewelry.” And he couldn’t have been more right. “Egyptomania” left an indelible mark on all of the major jewelry houses, from Cartier to Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron and Georges Fouquet. (Cartier created some of the most iconic jewelry designs that defined this era.)

While a lot of Art Deco jewelry was black and white — the black coming from the use of onyx or black enamel and the white from rock crystal and diamonds — there is plenty of color in jewelry of the era. A perfect accent to diamonds in platinum settings were blue sapphires, emeralds and rubies, and these stones were also used in combination with each other.

Many designers employed coral, jade and lapis lazuli, too. In fact, some of the most important avant-garde jewelers of the period, like Jean Després and Jean Fouquet (son of Georges), would combine white gold with ebony and malachite for a jolt of color.

A lot of the jewelry produced during this time nodded to current fashion trends, and women often accessorized their accessories. The cloche hat was often accented with geometric diamond brooches or double-clip brooches. Backless evening dresses looked fabulous with sautoir necklaces, and long pearl necklaces that ended with tassels, popular during the Edwardian period, were favored by women everywhere, including Coco Chanel.

Cartier Art Deco Diamond & Sapphire Clip Brooch/Hair Barrette, c. 1920
Located in Aspen, CO
Cartier, signed and numbered, Art Deco Diamond and Sapphire Platinum Antique Brooch and Hair Barrette, Signed and numbered by Cartier, this Art Deco jewel is magnificent. The natural unheated sapphires (probably from Burma), are a bright vivid blue, they are estimated to weigh 4.5 cts. The diamonds are all well matched, estimated to be F in color (colorless), and very, very slightly included (VVS) in clarity. They are estimated to weigh .98 cts. This piece can be worn either as a brooch or as a hair barrette. Leave it to the great jeweler Cartier to design a piece that can slide through fabric smoothly and easy to wear in the hair and, because this clip is slightly curved it will hold any thickness of hair. The two pinstems squeeze together and each fit into its holder making the barrettes quite comfortable. This Cartier Art Deco diamond and unheated Burma sapphire platinum brooch/hair barrette was purchased with an architecturally identical but very slightly larger ruby brooch (1/16th inch longer, and 1/8th inch wider). This very slightly smaller sapphire Cartier brooch measures 1- 7/8th in length, and one half of an inch in width. The diamond and unheated Burma Ruby brooch...

Art Deco Platinum, Diamond and Burma Ruby Brooch/Hair Barrette, c. 1920.
Located in Aspen, CO
Art Deco platinum, diamond and Burma ruby clip/hair barrette, c. 1920. This is a striking Art Deco statement possessing very fine and unusual fancy cut diamonds and natural unheated Burma rubies This piece can be worn either as a brooch or as a hair barrette. The diamonds are extremely rare and visually exciting to encounter. In the trade these are known as French cut diamonds. They are colorless to near colorless (F/G), and very very slightly included to very slightly included (VVS-VS). The estimated diamond weight is 9.5 cts. The natural unheated Burma rubies are a vivid red color, they are estimated to weigh 3.74 cts. The design of this geometric brooch is superb and contains unusually fine materials set with the highest of craftsmanship; and, visually presents itself as striking and vibrantly vivid. This clip was made so that it could be worn on fabric or in the hair as a barrette. The double stems in the back are slightly curved so that they can both slide through fabric smoothly, and comfortable and easy to wear in the hair. The clip is also slightly curved so that it will hold any thickness of hair or fabric. The two pinstems squeeze together and each fit into its own holder making the barrettes quite comfortable. This outstanding Art Deco piece was purchased with an identical Art Deco, very slightly smaller, brooch/hair clip - a sapphire and diamond matching statement, this piece is signed and numbered by Cartier (included in some of our photographs). This ruby brooch is slightly larger: 1/16th inch longer and 1/8th inch wider. The Cartier, very slightly smaller sapphire brooch measures 1- 7/8th in length, and one half of an inch in width. This diamond and unheated Burma Ruby brooch...

Art Deco 1920 Hat Dress Stick Pin in .800 Silver with Carved Nephrite Green Jade
Located in Miami, FL
An art deco chinoiserie stick pin with green Jade. Very nice antique piece from the European art deco period, circa 1920. This large hat-dress pin has been crafted with chinoiserie patterns in solid .800/.999 silver and mounted on top with a decorative element carved from natural Nephrite jadeite jade. The carving depicts the flying figure of a mythological dragon. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it in east Asian culture. during the days of imperial China, the emperor of China usually used the dragon as a symbol of his imperial strength and power. In Chinese culture, excellent and outstanding people are compared to a dragon, while incapable people with no achievements are compared to other, disesteemed creatures, such as a worm. A number of Chinese proverbs and idioms feature references to a dragon, such as "hoping one's child will become a dragon". Has a total weight of 13.2 Grams and a lenght of 7 Inches (17.78 Cm). The jade carving has a measurements of 35 mm by 40mm by 3 mm (1.38 x 1.57 x 0.11 Inches). Note: The piece of carved jade displayed...

Turtle Tortoise Brooch Pin Ruby Pink Rhodochrosite 14 Karat Gold Mary Lou Daves
Located in New York, NY
This is a wonderful antique Turtle or Tortoise Clip Brooch Pin with Ruby eyes and a fabulous heart shape Pink Rhodochrosite body in 14 Karat Yellow Gold in a gorgeous three dimensional design from the estate of Hollywood Legend Mary Lou Daves. Ms. Daves' jewelry exemplified her exquisite taste. Her jewels were unique, dramatic and elegant. This is one of the most beautiful antique jeweled animal pins we have seen. The fabulous turtle has a fully modeled three dimensional design with gorgeous Ruby eyes, wonderful engraved patterns throughout its head and legs, and the exquisite pink banded Rhodochrosite heart shaped body. I just love this! This whimsical turtle or tortoise walks delightfully across the body and creates a conversation piece to be passed on for generations. Animal inspired jewels are all the rage today. These antique gem set animal jewels are among the most highly desired and collected today. Provenance: The turtle is from the Bel Air estate of Delmer and Mary Lou Daves where a who's who of Hollywood legends (Cole Porter entertained guests at the piano) were entertained. Their love story began on the set of the 1938 film, "Professor Beware." As a successful contract writer for Warner Bros., Delmer Daves wrote the screenplay and wanted to visit the set to see how things were going. 19-year-old, Mary Lawrence was cast as the Bride. He was instantly smitten. "So you're playing the bride? I wish you would marry me," he quipped. "I shall answer you with the same spirit you asked me. Of course I will be yours forever." The two were married for 39 years, had three children and a lifetime of adventures. His career spanned 40 years during which he wrote and/or directed 80 movies including: Love Affair (1939), Destination Tokyo (1943) , Hollywood Canteen (1944), Dark Passage (1947), Broken Arrow (1950), Birds of Paradise (1951), The Last Wagon (1956), An Affair to Remember...
