Art Nouveau Brooches

ART NOUVEAU STYLE

Art Nouveau — generally considered to have begun in the late 1800s and ended with the start of World War I — was a movement in the decorative arts that drew inspiration from natural forms, such as trees, flowers and, of course, the human figure. The three main themes present in Art Nouveau jewelry and watches were flora, fauna and women.

Art Nouveau, which reached its pinnacle in the year 1900, spawned from artists who rejected the historicism of their predecessors to create an entirely new visual vocabulary. As compared to Art Deco jewelry’s geometric patterns and sharp lines, the extravagant style of antique Art Nouveau jewelry is characterized by curvilinear forms and whiplash lines, vibrant materials and dramatic imagery.

The first art and design movement of the 20th century, Art Nouveau was also a reaction against the Industrial Revolution, and took its inspiration from the theories of the Symbolists, the art of the Pre-Raphaelites, the ideas of John Ruskin and his follower William Morris and, most importantly Japanese crafts. (The country was a fertile ground for inspiration after it was opened to the West in 1854.) The Art Nouveau style touched all manners of the arts, including the most exultant jewelry.

Nature was a favorite muse for artists going back to the 18th and 19th centuries, but in the hands of 20th-century artists, it was depicted in new ways. For example, a withering flower was considered just as beautiful as one in full bloom. Winged creatures, such as insects and birds, were also a popular subject. Dragonflies and butterflies were particular favorites because they morphed so dramatically in different life stages.

This was also a reference to women, whose role in society was evolving. It was not uncommon to see a piece of jewelry that would at once reference a woman as a winged creature (think René Lalique’s famous Dragonfly brooch, circa 1897–98, at the Gulbenkian Collection in Lisbon). However, just as women’s roles were ambiguous, so was their image, as the femmes nouvelle were simultaneously eroticized and romanticized.

In addition to Lalique, vital figures in Art Nouveau jewelry included Louis Comfort Tiffany in the United States, Vladimir Soloviev, who designed jewelry for Peter Carl Fabergé in Russia, Fuset Grau of Spain, Karl Rothmuller of Germany and Philippe Wolfers of Belgium.

Art Nouveau jewelers used every “canvas” imaginable, looking beyond brooches and necklaces to belt buckles, fans, tiaras, dog collars (a type of choker necklace), pocket watches, corsages and hair combs. Multicolored gems and enamel could complete this vision better than diamonds. Jewelers also favored pearls, particularly baroque pearls, for their large size and irregular shape. However, opal was the most popular stone — its iridescence harmonized perfectly with the enamel, and it could be carved into any shape. Art Nouveau jewelry was primarily set in yellow gold.

Art Nouveau Carved Jade Brooch Natural Pearls Erotic, 1900
Located in Herzelia, Tel Aviv
Art Nouveau Carved Jade depicts a topless lady surrounded by Natural Pearls. Erotic motive. Mounted in Gold. Delicate and fine item representing its time perfectly. Surrounded by a line of tiny and delicate pearl seeds. Once it was common to communicate a message via pin or brooch. Nowadays this art is lost, but we can surely start a new tradition. Former Secretary of state Madeleine Albright published a fascinating book “Read My Pins” - a story and celebration of how one woman’s jewelry collection was used to make diplomatic history. There are holes in the base of the brooch from each side probably to create a choker or a bracelet, please take a look at the video. Created around 1900 probably Russia. A fine antique brooch...

Art Deco 1920 Hat Dress Stick Pin in .800 Silver with Carved Nephrite Green Jade
Located in Miami, FL
An art deco chinoiserie stick pin with green Jade. Very nice antique piece from the European art deco period, circa 1920. This large hat-dress pin has been crafted with chinoiserie patterns in solid .800/.999 silver and mounted on top with a decorative element carved from natural Nephrite jadeite jade. The carving depicts the flying figure of a mythological dragon. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it in east Asian culture. during the days of imperial China, the emperor of China usually used the dragon as a symbol of his imperial strength and power. In Chinese culture, excellent and outstanding people are compared to a dragon, while incapable people with no achievements are compared to other, disesteemed creatures, such as a worm. A number of Chinese proverbs and idioms feature references to a dragon, such as "hoping one's child will become a dragon". Has a total weight of 13.2 Grams and a lenght of 7 Inches (17.78 Cm). The jade carving has a measurements of 35 mm by 40mm by 3 mm (1.38 x 1.57 x 0.11 Inches). Note: The piece of carved jade displayed...

Anton Janda Austrian 1950 Brooch Earring Set in 18kt Gold with Diamonds Nephrite
Located in Miami, FL
Brooch and earrings parure designed by Anton Janda. Magnificent set composed by a brooch and a pair of earrings, created in Vienna Austria back in the 1950 by the master goldsmith Anton Janda. This set was carefully crafted in the desired art nouveau style in solid white gold of 18 karats with high polished finish and embellished with a great assortment of natural earth mined gemstones. The Delicate nephrite and the rock quartz of an almost transparent lilac were exceptionally carved into the shapes of flowers in bloom, a bud and sepal with stems, and a full leaf complete with tiny, polished edges and realistic veins. The earrings are made as a right and left and are fitted with posts for pierced ears and hinged French omega backs for fastening clips. The brooch is fitted with a double hinged pin bars with a trombone security lock. Diamonds: Mount in four-prongs settings, with 18 European round cut diamonds, 0.54 carats, white colorless F/G color, VS-2 clarity. Gemstones: Mount with 3 pieces, carved in the shape of leaves from natural nephrite green jade. Others: Embellished with 18 elements carved in the shape of lilies from natural translucent rock quartz. Weight: 41.95 Grams, (26.89 Dwt). Brooch Measurements: 95.25 mm by 60 mm (3.75 x 2.36 Inches). Earrings measurements: 35 mm by 16 mm (1.38 x 0.63 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with Austrian marks in use since 1922, six times with the W for the city of Vienna (Wien), the maker's mark AJ, the mark .750 for the assay and warranty of the gold and signed with the cartouche mark associated to Anton Janda. Note: Carved gemstone flowers have been a specialty in Austria and Germany for many years. From its hallmark .750, it can be determined that this was created in Austria for national sale inside the country, not to be exported. Note: This kind of jewelry pieces in 18 karats are very rare to see offered...
