Georgian Necklaces

GEORGIAN STYLE

Georgian jewelry is named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who in succession ruled England starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign, which lasted until 1837). A slew of beautiful pieces were produced during the period, and today antique Georgian rings, necklaces and other accessories are coveted by fine jewelry collectors.

There are certain features that distinguish jewelry from this era, including the fact that pieces from the 18th and early 19th centuries were handmade (so don’t let the absence of a maker’s mark lead you to believe otherwise). Antique Georgian jewelry also has a certain “look.” It’s a bit gray because stones were often set in silver, and because stonecutting techniques were not as advanced as they are today, the gems do not possess the level of sparkle to which we have become accustomed.

Intricate metalworking techniques such as repoussé (the hammering of metal into ornate designs) and cannetille (a method of working the gold wire to make it look woven) allowed goldsmiths to really flex their muscles. These gold pieces, either on their own or combined with gemstones, made for highly original and dramatic jewelry. The era also saw pieces with ornately woven strands of human hair.

Pearls, along with colored gemstones like garnets, rubies and sapphires, were widely used in Georgian jewelry. These were often cut in the shape of a cabochon or teardrop. It was fashionable to combine garnets or rubies with seed pearls. In Georgian diamond rings, popular cuts for diamonds included rose, old mine and table. Around the 1780s, paste jewelry, or hand-cut glass on foil, was used to imitate diamonds.

Antique Georgian Long Gold Chain, Necklace and Bracelets, Circa 1820
Located in London, GB
A Georgian long gold chain, of belcher links with a repeat zig-zag pattern. This chain has three barrel clasps and can also be worn as a shorter necklace and two bracelets or one bracelet and a medium length chain, circa 1820. This style of Georgian or Regency chain was at its height of popularity between 1800 and 1840. The Napoleonic wars had lead to a scarcity of gold, therefore jewellers designed pieces that had as much impact as possible, whilst utilising smaller quantities of gold. The chains are hand made, with the patterns being produced by stamping thin gold sheet, which were then curved lengthways and soldered together to form oval or round belcher links. From 1848 onwards more gold deposits were discovered, this lead to increases in weight of chains and had a strong influence on jewellery design in the Victorian period. The chunky look and delicate feel is distinguishes Georgian chains from Victorian examples. With thanks to Navette Jewellery

Georgian Berlin Iron and Mirrored Cut Steel Necklace and Earring Set
Located in Narberth, PA
Berlin iron jewelry was produced in Germany by the Berlin Royal Foundry beginning in 1804. Previously, iron jewelry had been worn primarily during periods of mourning due to the dark color of its black lacquer finish. However, it reached a high point of popularity between 1813 and 1830. To fund the War of Liberation against Napolean, citizens were asked to donate their precious gold in exchange for iron jewelry. The Berlin iron jewelry was sometimes inscribed with a portrait of Frederick William III of Prussia, or with the words "Gold gab ich für Eisen" (meaning "I gave gold for iron") or "Für das Wohl des Vaterlands" ("For the welfare of our country/fatherland"). Almost overnight, Berlin iron jewelry became a symbol of patriotism. Its beautiful fabrication and lacy appearance gave it widespread appeal, eventually reaching popularity in numerous European countries. Authentic Berlin iron jewelry is now very rare, and well-preserved pieces have become very collectible! Cut steel jewelry originated in England in the 17th century and subsequently spread throughout Europe, eventually becoming a popular style of jewelry worn by members of high society during the Victorian era. Made of polished faceted steel studs, the pieces were cut by hand and then assembled and riveted onto a metal back. The faceted steel elements give this type of jewelry a subtle, metallic glitter that resembles cut gemstones. Motifs varied from the simple to the sublime, with multiple layers and densely packed studs. The time-consuming process and the artistry required to create cut steel jewelry made it very valuable and highly sought-after during the Victorian age, particularly to wear during the stage of "secondary mourning." Produced up until the turn of the 19th century, antique cut steel jewelry is now highly collectible. An exceptional Berlin iron and cut steel necklace and earring set from the Georgian (ca1804) era! Crafted in fine Berlin ironwork with delicate cut steel studs and mirrored steel plaques throughout, this well-preserved ensemble is an incredible work of art. The ornate necklace adorns various sized iron-backed links topped with mirrored steel plaques, each one connected together by intricate, lacy Berlin ironwork. The largest link rests at the center, and features an oval-shaped mirrored steel plaque on the front that is adorns a raised iron cameo...

Grand Berlin Iron Cross, circa 1820
Located in Stamford, CT
In this large cross, the strength of Iron and fine gossamer swirls combine to create et another miracle of historic Berlin Iron work from the early 1800's. There are four layers of iron here forged together with focus on the central flower. What tool existed to twist this fine iron and how was it created in such fine sprays? When the German treasury was becoming depleted due to the war with Napoleon, the government addressed the aristocrats asking them to contribute their gold for the continuing battle. The wealthy answered the plea and were given iron jewels...
