About the Item

Tapio Wirkkala, bronze bowl model TW491, Kultakeskus, Hämeenlinna. Finland Bowl, diameter 29 cm, height 11.5 cm. Marked "Kultakeskus Oy Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) – Master of Design and Materials Tapio Wirkkala was a true polymath of Finnish design whose creative vision and craftsmanship helped elevate Finnish design onto the international stage in the 1950s. Exceptionally prolific and versatile, he mastered nearly every material and designed both everyday utility objects and unique art pieces. His foundation lay in exceptional manual skills and a deep understanding of materials. Wirkkala graduated as an ornamental carver from the Central School of Applied Arts in 1936, and rose to prominence in the post-war years, especially in the fields of glass and silver design, following success in several design competitions. His work is characterized by precision, refined forms, and inspiration drawn from nature. One of Wirkkala’s most important long-term collaborations was with Kultakeskus, a Finnish silversmith company whose production he revitalized in the 1950s. Over a partnership spanning more than 30 years, Wirkkala designed numerous silver objects, many of which were handcrafted and are now considered milestones of Finnish silver art. Wirkkala worked simultaneously with several manufacturers, navigating fluidly between mass production and one-of-a-kind creations. Natural forms, particularly those inspired by the Finnish Lapland, are recurring themes in his work. Wirkkala spent part of each year in Lapland with his family, drawing endless inspiration from its landscapes. Snow, ice, water surfaces, and the forms of leaves and boats were transformed into iconic glass and silver pieces—some of the most famous created for Iittala and Kultakeskus. In addition to industrial and artistic design, Wirkkala also worked in graphic design, creating among other things Finnish banknotes and the well-known shape of the Finlandia vodka bottle. His works have been exhibited in the world’s leading design museums and exhibitions, and he received numerous international awards, including the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale. Tapio Wirkkala was a visionary who merged traditional craftsmanship with modern design, leaving a legacy that not only shaped Finnish design but continues to inspire globally. His influence endures—in objects and in the very spirit of Finnish design thinking.

Bronze bowls by Tapio Wirkkala Models 446-448, Kultakeskus 1970s
By Kultakeskus Oy, Tapio Wirkkala
Located in Helsinki, FI
Tapio Wirkkala designed a large number of items fo Kultakeskus OY. Materials ranged from silver to bronze and other metals. This particular model was introduced in 1971 in a number of different sizes ranging from 160-290 mm. 48 pieces of these were given in 1978 World Champions sky competition in Lahti, Finland. This was also officially introduced in an exhibition in London in 1972. This design is of course very functional as well, since these bowls can be used for a variety of reasons, such as fruit bowls and so on. These 2 pieces came from the same household, so they sustain similar patina, since they aged in the same surroundings. The measures 25x8 cm are for the bigger bowl.. The smaller one is 16x7 cm. The bigger bowl has beautiful darker beauty marks or vintage spots 🙂 that only come with age and use, refer to pictures please. Rarely does a designer command such an expansive talent and career as Wirkkala did. Inspired by nature and armed with exceptional understanding of geomety and ratios, his designs literally shaped much of our daily lives. Designs ranging from daily items such as money...
