"Saturday Night Live" Abstract Painting on Panel William Shields Acclaimed I
Located in Arp, TX
William Stephens Shields, Jr., 1925 - 2010 "Saturday Night Live" 1996 Oil on canvas 36"x48" artist framed Signed lower right William Stephens Shields, Jr., 1925 - 2010 He was born in san Francisco, in 1931, Bill moved to Texas, where he grew up. Moved to New York in 1940 and later joined the Naval Air Corps at the age of 18. He served as an Aviation Cadet in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945. At the end of WWII, Bill returned to Texas. At 21, Bill re-focused his energy and enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Art as an Illustration major. What followed was a whirlwind of success, great friendships and a sense of belonging he had never before experienced. Art was his calling and the art-world could not have been less prepared for the likes of Bill Shields. He took them by storm, first Houston, then San Francisco, followed by New York in the late 60's. For 35 years, Bill produced some of the country's best illustrations: fresh, playful, loose and innovative. His illustrations were coveted by such clients as Bantam Books, Time Life, MacMillan Publishing Co., and were awarded numerous gold medals by the Societies of Illustrators in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, and the Houston Artists Guild. Later, following inspirational trips to Mexico and France, Bill shifted his attention to the self-directed world of fine art. After years of sculpting, making assemblages, painting nudes and landscapes, he settled on the exploration of large abstract oil paintings. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries in San Francisco, Connecticut and New York. CV EDUCATION: Chicago Academy Of Fine Art San Antonio Art Institute MAJOR FIELDS OF PROFESSIONAL ENDEAVOR: Freelance graphic design and illustration Instructor of painting and illustration Landscape, figurative and abstract painting ART RELATED EMPLOYMENT: (Professor of Art) California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, CA Academy of Art College, San Francisco, CA San Francisco Art Institute San Jose State University AWARDS FOR ILLUSTRATION, Gold Medals: New York Society of Illustrators Los Angeles Society of Illustrators San Francisco Society of Illustrators Dallas-Fort Worth Art Director's Club Houston Artist's Guild BIBLIOGRAPHY: Feature articles in: American Artist, Communication Arts, Print, North Light. My World Within
By Charlotte Bernstrom
Located in Burlingame, CA
Rothko-esque Color Field painting that delights from a distance and up close from Swedish-American visual artist Charlotte Bernstrom, who creates acrylic paintings that are poetic explorations depicting nature and humanity’s place within it. Taking queues from Abstract Expressionism and Impressionism, through juxtaposing nature-inspired fields of color over earth-like stained and textured canvas, the autobiographical works are rooted in landscape and lean toward abstraction. Bernstrom’s paintings, with their complex, earth-like surfaces, evoke an emotional response that directs viewers toward a consciousness of their place in the natural world, and perhaps also encourage better care of the Earth. Born and raised in Sweden, Charlotte was mentored by her grandfather, the painter Lennart Schultzberg. He started teaching her plein air painting when she was five years old. He came up with innovative ways of teaching a young child perspective, color theory and to use different mediums. She learned about seeing, listening, feeling and how to translate those qualities through paint. Charlotte was influenced and inspired by an environment filled with art. In her early twenties, Charlotte moved to San Francisco and studied at the Academy of Art University and the California College of the Arts. Her landscape paintings gradually became more abstract and autobiographical, with an emphasis on color and texture. 'My World...

Invitation to the Paradise #11
Located in San Francisco, CA
Artist: Sakurai Takami - Japanese (1928-2016) Title: Invitation to the Paradise ST#11 Year: circa 1972 Medium: Oil on Canvas Sight size: 18 x 24 inches. Framed size: 21 x 27 inches Signature: Unsigned. Label on old frame Condition: Very good Frame: Framed in original frame. Frame in poor condition This oil on canvas is by the noted avant garde Japanese artist Sakurai Takami (1928-2016). It was created sometime between 1971, when Takami lived in San Francisco and was a member of and exhibited with the “Konnyaku Commune” and 1978 when he exhibited with the Vorpal Gallery in San Francisco. This painting was purchased from the Vorpal Gallery. The painting is in very good condition. It is unsigned, but the title is on the side of the metal frame. The frame is fine, but the mat is stained and in poor condition. I will include the frame for protection and provenance. Sakurai was a main member of the avant-garde art group “Kyushu-ha”. Kyushu-ha” created a major trend among contemporary art in post-war Japan, which spread from Fukuoka to the whole country and also France, the United States and other overseas countries. Throughout his life he was very dramatic; his enormous and diverse works are energetic and face us with the true meaning of expression. Initially his main focus was on informal paintings, but it gradually expanded towards anti-artistic objects and performances. His works are characterized by the usage of materials that are connected with the smell of a workers life, such as coal tar, asphalt, woven mats and dungarees (jute bag). Shortly after Kyushu-ha disbanded in 1968, Sakurai Takami moved to San Francisco. From 1973 onward, he lived in France. The people and faces in Sakurai’s paintings are coloured red, so that the colour, a symbol of heat, becomes a “social sign”. Each person has a life of their own, while at the same time expressing the colourful life of human communities, like the hippies. His theme may be drawing “humanity and the universe” with a loving embrace of “peace” and “life”. 1953 graduated Fukuoka Liberal Arts University 1955 40th Nika Art Exhibition, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum 1956 Persona Exhibition, outer west side of the Fukuoka prefectural office 1957-68 part of Kyushu-ha 1965 went to the United States (~’67) 1970 “Kanousei e no Ishi“ Kitakyushu Hachiman Museum of Art Kyushu: Trends in Japanese Contemporary Art Exhibition, Fukuoka Bunka Hall Sakurai Takami solo exhibition, Fukuoka Bunka Hall went to the United States for the second time, started working with the konyaku commune (San Francisco) 1971 Konyaku Revolution Art Exhibition (San Francisco) 1973 Nagoya mayor nominating election convention, Azabu public hall moved to France 1974 formed the group “Kusuguri” (Paris) 1975 7th...
