Clash at Rijmenam Engraved: A Turning Point in the Eighty Years' War, 1632
Located in Langweer, NL
Rare engraving depicting a battle in the Eighty Year' War. The Battle of Rijmenam took place on July 31, 1578, during the early stages of the Eighty Years' War. It was a conflict between the States-General of the Netherlands and the Spanish governor-general, resulting in a Spanish defeat. The forces of the States-General set up camp at Rijmenam under the overall leadership of the Count of Boussu. Their army consisted of 12,000 infantry and 7,000 cavalry. The English mercenaries were led by Sir John Norris and Sir Richard Bingham, the Scottish mercenaries by Robert Stuart, and the French Huguenots by François de la Noue. Don Juan of Austria, the Spanish commander, commanded an army of 12,000 infantry and 5,000 cavalry. He planned to attack before reinforcements from Zutphen could arrive. His subordinates, Alexander Farnese and Gabrio Serbelloni, considered this too risky, but Don Juan proceeded with his plan and launched an early morning attack on July 31. He attempted to draw Boussu out for an open field battle, but Boussu stayed behind the dug trenches. After three hours of waiting, Don Juan ordered a company of musketeers under Alonso de Leyva and three groups of cuirassiers under the Marquis del Monte to stage a feigned attack on the village's rear. In response, Boussu sent Norris to confront them. Following the initial skirmish, Scottish forces under Stuart and Spanish infantry under Fernando Álvarez de Toledo...

Very Rare Charles I 1630 Oak Refectory Dining Hall Table, Plaish Hall Shropshire
Located in GB
We are delighted to offer for sale this stunning Charles I 1630 solid oak hall or refectory table from Plaish hall Church Stretton Shropshire A very good looking and well made refectory or hall table, it has a triple plank top with cleated ends, moulded frieze above turned and square section legs joined by peripheral stretchers The table came from the Collection of Plaish Hall, Church Stretton, Shropshire which was the Property of Mrs Roy Merley and Family. Plaish Hall is a stunning Grade I listed Tudor house, standing in beautiful gardens and grounds and surrounded by the unspoilt countryside of South Shropshire. It is believed to be the first brick built house in Shropshire in the 1580s, (although parts of an earlier stone house were incorporated), at a time when the great majority of buildings in the parish of Cardington were timber framed. Of special note are the chimneys of Plaish Hall which are thought to have been based on those at Hampton Court, they are considered to be the finest in the West Midlands. From the early 1980s and over a period of 35 years Plaish Hall was initially meticulously restored and then maintained, its glorious Tudor style gardens were also reinstated. Judge Sir William Leighton Plaish Hall was re-built for Judge Sir William Leighton who on his death in 1607 left land to endow church repairs at St James’s, Cardington, as well as the sum of £50 for the making of his tomb in the chancel. In his notes on the History of the Church and Parish of Cardington, G B H Bishop...

The Adoration -Painting by Giuseppe Assereto - 1630
By Giuseppe Assereto
Located in Roma, IT
The Adoration is an original modern artwork realized by Giuseppe Assereto (died in Genoa in 1650) in the first half of the 17th Century. Original Oil Painting on Canvas. A 19th Century style gilded wood frame is included. The Autograph of the work was confirmed by Camillo Manzitti. Very good conditions. The frame is in excellent conditions too. Reference: C. Marcenaro, Pittori genovesi a Genova nel '600 e nel '700, Genova 1969, pp. 134 ; 135, n. 55. Z. Wazbinski, Un Quadro Caravaggesco Di Gioacchino Assereto, in Prospettiva, n. 26, 1981, pp. 60 ; 63. F. R. Pesenti, La Pittura in Liguria. The Adoration is an excellent example of the XVII Century Italian Painting. The style of the work denotes the suggestive influence of Assereto father's mature production, when influenced by Mathias Stom (Amersfoort, about 1600 - Sicily, after 1650) expresses dark sensibilities in a southern Italian style. In his works, however, there is an accentuated naturalism and interesting similarities with the production of Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione. Gioacchino Assereto died in 1650, while, according to Soprani, he was intent on painting a Last Supper for the oratory...
