Untitled Mod Op Art 1967 Painting on Silk
By Henry Pearson
Located in Surfside, FL
Label from Obelisk Gallery verso. Henry C. Pearson (October 8, 1914 – December 3, 2006) was an American abstract and modernist painter. Pearson was born in Kinston, North Carolina, graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1938, and studied theatrical design at Yale University. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Second World War, designing maps for the Okinawa campaign, and then re-enlisted to serve in the US occupation of Japan, where he was influenced by Japanese art and theatre forms. Henry Pearson is perhaps best known for a mildly optical manner of painting, featuring a mutable labyrinth of undulating parallel lines, which somewhat inadvertently linked him to the Op Art movement of the 1960s. Although included in the Museum of Modern Art's landmark exhibition The Responsive Eye in 1965, his work displays an intuitive rhythm and poetic elegance that falls well outside of the calculated, often hard-edged quality normally associated with the Op group of artists. Pearson came late to the visual arts. His first career, in theatre design, was cut short by the Second World War. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942, and at war's end requested duty in occupied Japan, where a prolonged contact with Japanese culture nurtured a passion for painting. Upon his discharge from the army, in 1953, he enrolled in the Art Students League in New York City, where he studied with, among others, Reginald Marsh and Will Barnet. Inspired by Malevich, he turned to rectilinear abstraction, and employed it as the dominant means of expression in his painting between 1954 and 1961. As early as 1959, however, sensing an incipient decadence in his geometric canvases...

Large 3D Cast Paper Abstract Oil Monoprint Unique Monotype Painting John Walker
By John Walker
Located in Surfside, FL
John Walker British (b. 1939) Salsipuedes Forms (1991) Monoprint relief print with dry pigment, monotype Hand signed lower right Provenance: Garner Tullis Workshop A monotype is literally one of a kind; it is not a method of multiplication. The artist makes an image with a liquid medium on wood, metal or glass, and paper is laid over the moist image and bonded under pressure the paper is then removed bringing with it the transposed monotype. John Walker (born 1939) is an English painter and printmaker. He has been called "one of the standout abstract painters of the last 50 years." Walker studied in Birmingham at the Moseley School of Art, and later the Birmingham School of Art and Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Some of his early work was inspired by abstract expressionist art and post-painterly abstraction, and often combined apparently three-dimensional, sculptural shapes with "flatter" elements. These pieces are usually rendered in acrylic paint. In the early 1970s, Walker made a series of large...

Large Murano Glass Abstract Blown Glass Sculpture Gold, Clear Constantini Vase
Located in Surfside, FL
Dimensions: 15.5 X 7 X 7 in. The organic shaped vase showcases an applied light gold colored threaded design enveloping the clear body, around. Hand signed Constantini S. It came from an important estate in the Palm Beach area. Made in Murano, handmade according to the ancient Murano glass tradition. Master Sergio Costantini was born in Venice in 1956 and learned the technique of glass processing from the famous Master Glassmakers of Murano A. Barbini, Licio Zanetti, L. Mellara. His works are exhibited globally in the most important museums and art galleries. Venetian glass (Italian: vetro veneziano) is thought to have been made for over 1,500 years, and production has been concentrated on the Venetian island of Murano since the 13th century. Murano glassmakers created cristallo—which was almost transparent and considered the finest glass in the world. Murano glassmakers also developed a white-colored glass (milk glass called lattimo) that looked like porcelain. They later became Europe's finest makers of mirrors. Murano glassmaking began a revival in the 1920s. Today, Murano and Venice are tourist attractions, and Murano is home to numerous glass factories and a few individual artists' studios. Its Museo del Vetro (Glass Museum) in the Palazzo Giustinian contains displays on the history of glassmaking as well as glass sculpture samples ranging from Egyptian times through the present day. The Venetian glassmakers of Murano are known for many innovations and refinements to glassmaking. Among them are Murano beads, cristallo, lattimo, chandeliers, and mirrors. Additional refinements or creations are goldstone, multicolored glass (millefiori), and imitation gemstones made of glass. Aventurine glass, also known as goldstone glass, is translucent brownish with metallic (copper) specks. Calcedonio is a marbled glass that looked like the semi precious stone chalcedony. This type of glass was created during the 1400s by Angelo Barovier, who is considered Murano's greatest glassmaker. Ercole Barovier, a descendant of Murano's greatest glassmaker Angelo Barovier, won numerous awards during the 1940s and 1950s for his innovations using the murrine technique. Sommerso is a form of artistic Murano glass that has layers of contrasting colors (typically two), which are formed by dipping colored glass into another molten glass and then blowing the combination into a desired shape. The outermost layer, or casing, is often clear. Sommerso was developed in Murano during the late 1930s. Flavio Poli was known for using this technique, and it was made popular by Seguso Vetri d'Arte and the Mandruzzato family in the 1950s. This process is a popular technique for vases, and is sometimes used for sculptures. Some of Venice's historical glass factories in Murano remain well known brands today, including De Biasi...

Abstract Expressionist Enamel on Metal Color Field Painting Paul Jenkins Style
By Dom Mingolla
Located in Surfside, FL
Wall hanging, Framed 16 X 20. Enamel measures 16 X 12 Dominic Mingolla (1922 – 1999) Mingolla created paintings in many different materials and genres. Best known for his large abstract expressionist watercolor paintings similar in style to Paul Jenkins and for his Enamel work. His work bears affinities both to Lyrical Abstraction and to Tachisme artists such as Nicolas de Staël, Serge Poliakoff, Andre Lanskoy, Hans Hartung, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Gustave Singier, Alfred Manessier, Roger Bissiere, "Lyrical Abstraction arose in the 1960s and 70s, following the challenge of Minimalism and Conceptual art. Many artists began moving away from geometric, hard-edge, and minimal styles, toward more lyrical, sensuous, romantic abstractions worked in a loose gestural style. These "lyrical abstractionists" sought to expand the boundaries of abstract painting, and to revive and reinvigorate a painterly 'tradition' in American art. At the same time, these artists sought to reinstate the primacy of line and color as formal elements in works composed according to aesthetic principles – rather than as the visual representation of sociopolitical realities or philosophical theories." "Characterized by intuitive and loose paint handling, spontaneous expression, illusionist space, acrylic staining, process, occasional imagery, and other painterly techniques, the abstract works included in this exhibition sing with rich fluid color and quiet energy. Artists associated with Lyrical Abstraction include: Natvar Bhavsar, Lamar Briggs, Friedel Dzubas, Sam Francis, Ronnie Landfield, Pat Lipsky...

“Headed to Market, 1916”
By Everett Shinn
Located in Southampton, NY
Original drawing of a woman heading to market by the well known American artist, Everett Shinn. Mixed media work created with charcoal, pastel and gouache. Signed with the artist’s initials lower right and dated 1916. Condition is very good. Under glass. Matted and in a period gold frame with restorations. Overall framed measurements are 23.5 by 17.25 inches. Provenance: A New York City estate. Everett Shinn (1876 – 1953) Everett Shinn, a realist artist associated with the Ashcan School and member of “The Eight” was born in New Jersey in 1876. After showing an aptitude for the arts as a child, at age 15, Shinn was enrolled at the Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia. He quickly moved on to classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and by the age of 17, he was working as a staff artist for the Philadelphia Press. While working at the Press, Shinn befriended fellow artists William J. Glackens, George Luks, and John Sloan. This group, with Robert Henri and Joseph Laub, established the Charcoal Club, a social and intellectual sort of alternative art school. In 1897, Shinn moved to New York City to work as an illustrator at the New York World. He became fascinated by the drama of the city. While visiting Europe in 1900, Shinn took interest in the work of the Impressionists, particularly those of Degas. Degas’ influence can be read in Shinn’s depictions of American theater. From his acquaintances in the theater world, Shinn began to paint decorative “rococo revivalist” murals in the homes of the wealthy elite. He also worked extensively in pastel, portraying the rough life of the city. In 1908, Shinn exhibited alongside his Charcoal Club associates, with the addition of Arthur B. Davies, Ernest Lawson, and Maurice Prendergast...

Stanley Boxer Mixed Media Abstract Expressionist Painting on Paper, Gold
By Stanley Boxer
Located in Surfside, FL
Abstract, 1987 Hand signed and dated verso Not sure of technique. this might be a monotype or monoprint with hand painting. The handmade paper is cut somewhat irregularly as per the artists intentions. Stanley Boxer (1926-May 8, 2000) was an American abstract expressionist artist best known for thickly painted abstract works of art. He was also an accomplished sculptor and printmaker. He received awards from the Guggenheim Fellowship and the National Endowment for the Arts. Boxer was born in New York City, and began his formal education after World War II, when he left the Navy and studied at the Art Students League of New York. He drew, painted, made prints, and sculpted. His work was recognized by art critic Clement Greenberg, who categorized him as a color field painter, A group that included Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still, and Mark Rothko and was a form of Abstract Expressionism and later included Helen Frankenthaler, Ad Reinhardt, Kenneth Noland, Gene Davis, Jules Olitski, Raymond Parker and Morris Louis. Boxer himself was adamant in rejecting this stylistic label. Over the years, he remained loyal to the materially dense abstract mode on which his reputation rested.. Art critic Grace Glueck wrote "Never part of a movement or trend, though obviously steeped in the language of Modernism, the abstract painter Stanley Boxer was a superb manipulator of surfaces, intensely bonding texture and color." In 1953 Boxer had his first solo exhibition of paintings in New York City, and showed regularly thereafter until his death. His paintings and sculpture were represented in New York City during the late 1960s through 1974 by the Tibor de Nagy Gallery, then by the André Emmerich Gallery from 1975 until 1993, and finally by Salander-O'Reilly Galleries until its demise in 2007. Outsider Ryan Humphrey Street Art Collage, Large Painting Jackson Pollock Photo
By Ryan Humphrey
Located in Surfside, FL
Where the Road Crashes into the Sea, 2008 Aluminum, rivets, glass, acrylic paint, fabric Dimensions: 55 1/2 x 55" Mixed Media Sculptural Wall Hanging Art. This painting was made after visiting the location of the fatal Jackson Pollock car crash and includes a silkscreen photograph of the scene. The letters are formed from cut up old license plates. Ryan Humphrey (born 1971) is an American artist who currently lives and works in New York City. Education: BFA, Ohio University, MFA, Hunter College, New York 1999; Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine, 2001; Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program, NY, 2005-2006 Ryan Humphrey grew up in a small town in Ohio building things in his yard, riding BMX bikes and skateboarding. He then moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the next three years to work at The Carnegie Museum of Art and obtain a commercial art degree where he developed an interest in contemporary fine art. This inspired him (along with a scholarship) to attend Ohio University where he earned his BFA in Sculpture. After moving to New York City he received his MFA from Hunter College, paying his way through school by working at The Dia Center for the Arts. After attending The Skowhegan summer residency program in Maine he worked for The Andy Warhol Foundation and participated in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. He has exhibited extensively. He currently lives and works in New York City. His work has been featured in the traveling exhibition Will Boys Be Boys? Questioning Adolescent Masculinity in Contemporary Art :Photograph, video, painting and sculpture curated by Shamim Momin of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Humphrey was also a contestant in Season I of Top Design, Bravo's reality show. Recently, Humphrey was included in the Queens International 4 exhibition at the Queens Museum of Art. His large-scale installation, titled Fast Forward (2009), included BMX ramps adjacent to a wall-to-ceiling assemblage tapestry, collection of trophies and customized BMX bikes, and he continued this theme in his installation Look for the dream that keeps coming back (2010) at Kunsthalle Galapagos. Humphrey expresses his growing up in BMX and skateboard culture through his art. The assemblage also included several paintings, created by the artist for the exhibition, and several sculptures of BMX bike wheels. The paintings were small drips that recall the works of Jackson Pollock, and the BMX sculptures are similar to Marcel Duchamp's Bicycle Wheel. The installation included an opening night performance by legendary BMX pro Dizz Hicks and Ryan Humphrey on the ramps. An edition of 20 silkscreen posters was made by the artist, and signed by himself and Dizz Hicks, to commemorate the event. He was included in the show 5 X 5 at the Whitney Museum of American Art at Philip Morris. Reed Anderson, Rina Banerjee, Susan Graham, Ryan Humphrey and Larry Krone -- each created a work inspired by one (post-1985) from the museum's own collection. Christopher Wool, Donald Lipski...
