This is a masterpiece of bold, graphic, mod design. Along with Reuven Rubin and Menashe Kadishman he is among Israel's best known artists internationally. Biographical info: The son of a rabbi, Yaacov Agam can trace his ancestry back six generations to the founder of the Chabad movement in Judaism. in 1946, he entered the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. Studying with Mordecai Ardon, a former student at the Weimar Bauhaus. Yaakov Agam has been associated h with “abstract” artists, “hard edge” artists, and artists such as Josef Albers and Max Bill. Others find in Agam’s work an indebtedness to the masters of the Bauhaus. Agam’s approach to art, being conceptual in nature, has been likened to Marcel Duchamp’s, who expressed the need to put art “at the service of the spirit.” And, because of Agam’s employment of color and motion in his art, he has been compared to Alexander Calder, the artist who put sculpture into motion. (Motion is not an end, but a means for Agam. Calder’s mobiles are structures that are fixed, revolving at the whim of the wind. In a work by Agam, the viewer must intervene.) Agam has also been classified as an “op art” artist because he excels in playing with our visual sensitivities. Agam went to Zurich to study with Johannes Itten at the Kunstgewerbeschule. There, he met Frank Lloyd Wright and Siegfried Giedion, whose ideas on the element of time in art and architecture impressed him. In 1955, Galerie Denise René hosted a major group exhibition in connection with Vasarely's painting experiments with movement. in addition to art by Vasarely, it included works by Yaacov Agam, Pol Bury, Soto and Jean Tinguely, among others. Most Americans were first introduced to Vasarely by the groundbreaking exhibition, "The Responsive Eye," at New York's Museum of Modern Art in 1965. Josef Albers, Richard Anuszkiewicz. Dee Shapiro is a Contemporary American artist and writer associated with the Pattern and Decoration movement. I have seen this referred to as Hejaz. Dee Shapiro was inspired to be an Artist in her early years of education. Dee's career started in the 1970s as a pattern painter with her works of art included in the Pattern and Decoration at P.S. 1 (other artists included Mary Grigoriadis, Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Kim MacConnel, Miriam Schapiro, Betty Woodman, Robert Zakanitch.) She researched and explored the Fibonacci Progression in color on graph paper and also explored geometric complexity of architectural designs, leading her to create the small horizontal oil paintings of cities and landscapes. Dee Shapiro became a Yaddo fellow in 2017. Dee Shapiro obtained her bachelor's degree in 1958 and Master of Science in 1960 from Queens College, City University of New York. Dee Shapiro is an artist that sees the subject on a large scale, but what she creates is on a diminutive scale. Shapiro's strength is the ability to give expressive power on canvas that makes her work seem larger than they are. Dee Shapiro has been a teacher, lecturer, and writer through career. He received his B.S. in Industrial Design from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1968, returning later to do independent study there. Johnny Friedlaender (26 December 1912 – 18 June 1992) was a leading 20th-century artist, whose works have been exhibited in Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Japan and the United States. He has been influential upon other notable artists, who were students in his Paris gallery. His preferred medium of aquatint etching is a technically difficult artistic process, of which Friedlaender has been a pioneer. Gotthard Johnny Friedlaender was born in Pless (Pszczyna), Prussian Silesia, as the son of a pharmacist. He was graduated from the Breslau (Wrocław) high school in 1922 and then attended the Academy of Arts (Akademie der Bildenden Kunste) in Breslau, where he studied under Otto Mueller. He graduated from the Academy as a master student in 1928. In 1930 he moved to Dresden where he held exhibitions at the J. Sandel Gallery and at the Dresden Art Museum. He was in Berlin for part of 1933, and then journeyed to Paris. After two years in a Nazi concentration camp, he emigrated to Czechoslovakia, where he settled in Ostrava, where he held the first one-man show of his etchings. In 1936 Friedlaender journeyed to Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Austria, France and Belgium. At the Hague he held a successful exhibition of etchings and watercolours. He fled to Paris in 1937 as a political refugee of the Nazi regime with his young wife, who was an actress. In that year he held an exhibition of his etchings which included the works: L ‘Equipe and Matieres et Formes. From 1939 to 1943 he was interned in a series of concentration camps, but survived against poor odds. After freedom in 1944 Friedlaender began a series of twelve etchings entitled Images du Malheur with Sagile as his publisher. In the same year he received a commission to illustrate four books by Freres Tharaud of the French Academy. In 1945 he performed work for several newspapers including Cavalcade and Carrefour. In the year 1947 he produced the work Reves Cosmiques and in that same year he became a member of the Salon de Mai, which position he held until 1969. In the year 1948 he began a friendship with the painter Nicolas de Staël and held his first exhibition in Copenhagen at Galerie Birch. The following year he showed for the first time in Galerie La Hune in Paris. After living in Paris for 13 years, Friedlaender became a French citizen in 1950. Friedlaender expanded his geographic scope in 1951 and exhibited in Tokyo in a modern art show. In the same year he was a participant in the XI Trienale in Milan, Italy. By 1953 he had produced works for a one-man show at the Museum of Neuchâtel and exhibited at the Galerie Moers in Amsterdam, the II Camino Gallery in Rome, in São Paulo, Brazil and in Paris. He was a participant of the French Italian Art Conference in Turin, Italy that same year. Friedlaender accepted an international art award in 1957, becoming the recipient of the Biennial Kakamura Prize in Tokyo. In 1959 he received a teaching post awarded by UNESCO at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. By 1968 Friedlaender was travelling to Puerto Rico, New York City and Washington, D.C. to hold exhibitions. That year he also purchased a home in the Burgundy region of France. 1971 was another year of diverse international travel including shows in Bern, Milan, Paris, Krefeld and again New York. In the latter city he exhibited paintings at the Far Gallery, a venue becoming well known for its patronage of important twentieth-century artists. This is not signed or numbered. it is from a folio of prints. Laura Fiume was born in Urbino, central Italy in 1953. Her education took place in Milan at the Liceo Artistico and at the Polytechnic School of Design. In 1976 she moved to Canzo, near Como where she learned serigraphy, ceramics, and painting from the well known artist Salvatore Fiume, her father. At the beginning the main subject of her works was that of fishes. She then extended her interest to the wider world of animals, interpreted through a deliberately naïve style and very bright colours. In 1983 Laura’s works were exhibited both at the Basel Art Fair and at Artexpo in New York. The latter marked the beginning of a collaboration with the Work’s II Gallery In Southampton (NY) which would continue until 1988. Her major exhibitions of those years were in Milan at the Palazzo dell’Arengario, now home of the Museo del Novecento in Piazza Duomo, (1985), and in Venice at the Assicurazioni Generali headquarters in Piazza San Marco (1987). In 1983 Laura began her ceramic production in her father’s workshop of Canzo located in a former silk mill. Between 1990 and 1992 thanks to an exclusive agreement with a Japanese company her paintings and graphic works were distributed throughout Japan. The 1990 exhibition at the Artesanterasmo Gallery of Milan on the theme of mirrors was the only occasion in which she exhibited her paintings with her father. Her collaboration with that gallery has been steady since 1988. In 1992, following a suggestion from the well known architect Pepe Tanzi, Laura collaborated to the launch of the Pozzi & Verga new collection of tables and chairs by including images of those pieces of furniture in her own paintings. Between 1992 and 2000 she had her own showroom in Milan where her collections of ceramics and her creations for leading companies like Ricchetti (tiles), Fede Cheti (home fabrics), Edilkamin (fireplaces and stoves), Kaigai (textiles for clothings and bathroom towels), Rosenthal (china), and Proserpio Arredamenti (furnishings and frabrics) were on display. In 1995 she was chosen as Designer of the Year by Meyer Mayor, the distinguished Swiss company specialising in kitchen and table linen production. In the 1995 exhibition entitled Walls and Terracottas at the Artesanterasmo Gallery of Milan abstract most of the subjects were painted on dirt-like materials. In the same year she also presented her new Tableaux an Terre at the L’Ile en terre Gallery of Saint Paul de Vence, France. Between 1996 and 2005 she collaborated with the Edizioni San Paolo Publishers illustrating children’s books and stories for kids in the G-baby Magazine. In 1999 she increased her show-room space by creating Atelier Produzioni d’Arte where prints, ceramics, and sculptures by various international artists were presented. In 2000 Laura began her collaboration with Raika of Japan designing their fashion collections which have been on display since 2002 in the Showroom Laura Fiume at the Mitsukoshi Department Store in Tokyo. In 2000 Laura designed a collection of coffee cups called The Jungle Collection for Cellini Deutschland. In April 2003, as part of the events that took place during the Salone del Mobile of Milan, Laura held a large exhibition at the Spazio Exté entitled Other Rooms: A Tribute To Philippe Starck. On that occasion Laura enjoyed the collaboration of Alessi, Driade, and Flos who kindly lent her the pieces from their Philippe Starck production represented in her paintings for an installation in that exhibition. In June 2003 Laura held a one-artist exhibition at the Svetog Krševana Gallery in Šibenik, Croatia as part of the International Children’s Festival of that town where she exhibited her early works dedicated to the world of children. In 2005 she gave her contribution to the restyling of the L’Arenella Hotel on the Isola del Giglio, Tuscany, by providing a number of enlarged images of her works which became the characterizing element of the hotel’s interiors. In the summer of the same year she held a retrospective at the Vartai Gallery in Vilnius, Lithuania. In 2005 she also presented an installation within the project Ten Arm-chairs for Ten Artists, an initiative by Molteni & C, a leading company in the furniture field, where Laura was asked to decorate a Molteni arm-chair from the Reversi collection and to carry out a number of paintings using the same fabrics covering their couches and arm-chairs. In 2006 there were as many as three exhibitions of Laura’s. The first one, called Visual Amplifications was held in Fiesole, near Florence, in the museum within the St. Alexander Basilica building. The second one, entitled Private Stories, took place in Sansepolcro, Tuscany at the Piero della Francesca City Museum. The third exhibition, entitled Trame d’interni (Plots in Interiors) was hosted in Milan by the Artesanterasmo Gallery where Laura presented her new paintings on fabrics provided by well known fabric producer Enzo degli Angiuoni. In 2007 she exhibited her works in Rome at the Galleria Margutta 3 and then at the trendy TAD Conceptstore showroom of Via del Babuino. Fortess (1907-1993) was a painter, printmaker and teacher, of Boston, Massachusetts and Woodstock, N.Y. Fortess was born in Antwerp, Belgium on October 13, 1907, and became an American citizen in 1923. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Students League in New York, and the Woodstock School of Painting with Yasuo Kuniyoshi. In 1937 the Works Progress Administration sent him and several other artists to Alaska to document the towns, villages, and remote wilderness landscapes (Pemberton, “Alaska art museum collects WPA’s Depression works from the territory,” Columbia Daily Tribune, November 9, 2003). Trains, trucks, and industrial buildings were what Karl Fortess envisioned when the Public Works of Art Project suggested that he depict “the American Scene.” His work bears the influence of Surrealism, Russsian Constructivist art and Cubism. He was part of a circle of left leaning artists loosley involved with the WPA which included Sol Wilson, Isaac Soyer, Louis Lozowick, Abraham Harriton, Ben Shahn, William Gropper, Nahum Tschacbasov, Morris Shulman, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Louis Slobodkin, Adolf Dehn, Le Corbusier and Louis Schanker. Karl Fortress taught at the Art Students League, Brooklyn Museum Art School, Louisiana State University, Fort Wright College, and Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts. He was a member of the Artists Equity Association, Society of American Graphic Artists, American Association of University Professors, and the British Film Institute. He was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1946, was named an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1960 and elected to full Academician in 1971. Fortess taught at many different schools, including Boston University School of Fine Art, where he also created an archive of interviews with more than two hundred and fifty contemporary American painters, sculptors, and graphic artists including many with with artists associated with the Woodstock, N.Y. art community. Richard Marshall Merkin (1938-2009) was an American painter, illustrator and arts educator. Merkin's fascination with the 1920s and 1930s defined his art and shaped his identity as a professional dandy. Merkin traveled back in time as an artist, to the time of the interwar years, creating narrative scenes (ala Robert Crumb and Ben Katchor) in bright colors of jazz musicians, film stars, writers, and sports heroes. Merkin was as well known for his painting and illustration work as he was for his eccentric collecting habits and his outré fashion sense. he received a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship in Painting. Merkin began teaching at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 1963 and remained there for 42 years, during which time he built his reputation in New York. Some notable students Merkin taught at RISD include Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth of the band Talking Heads and Martin Mull. Merkin had been a contributing editor for Vanity Fair since 1986 and a regular contributor of illustrations to The New Yorker since 1988, as well as Harper's and The New York Times' Sunday Magazine. From 1988–1991, he wrote a monthly style column called "Merkin on Style" for Gentlemen's Quarterly. Merkin also designed several album covers for the Jazz record label Chiaroscuro Records for artists such as Mary Lou Williams, Ruby Braff, and Ellis Larkins. Merkin's friend, the writer Tom Wolfe wrote in an email to the New York Times upon Merkin's death: "He was the greatest of that breed, the Artist Dandy, since Sargent, Whistler and Salvador Dali, Like Dali, he had one of the few remaining Great Mustaches in the art world" Perpetually on the fly from his middle-class Brooklyn background, Merkin found the perfect escape in the mid ‘60s in George Frazier, a dapper Boston columnist who inspired the emerging New York painter’s overnight reinvention of himself. William Scharf (born 1927, Media, PA) is an American artist from New York, he teaches at The Art Students League of New York. Painting with acrylics, he was a member of the New York School movement. Often categorized as a late generation Abstract Expressionist, Known for producing paintings with abstract compositions incorporating biomorphic and geometric forms in vivid colors, the artist was influenced by Surrealism, the Color Field painters, and symbolism. He apprenticed with Mark Rothko and was influenced by his color field paintings. The surrealist painter Arshile Gorky and the Abstract expressionism style found in 1950s New York City also influenced Scharf. His exhibits include San Francisco Art Institute (1969), the Pepperdine University's Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art (2001), and Richard York Gallery in New York City (2004). In the heyday of Abstract Expressionism, being serious meant following the tenets of the New York School, which required abstract paintings to be spontaneous improvisations, the messier the better. At once hedonistic and disciplined, his brazen paintings are nothing if not promiscuous. The best ones mix the dynamism of gestural abstraction with sensual rhythms of decorative patterning, sometimes souping up the stew with cartoonish symbols and flourishes so ripe they belong in a dandy's fantasies. Recently graduated from Pasadena’s legendary Art Center College of Design, Tom Baldwin created the series of inkjet prints Japanese Gardens in 1996 on his computer, using then-nascent graphics technology to "paint" his images on the computer screen. Baldwin embraced this technology and its accompanying printing process not just for the speed and ease of their use, but because the artist could achieve the absolute flatness that the principles of modernism preached but ultimately--because of the limitations of their tools--never reached. These colorful, semi-abstracted views of Japanese temple landscapes subtly, but radically redefine picture space. Baldwin shifts fore and backgrounds, giving equal weight to skies and hillsides. Endowing a lowly bush with a vibrant purple or orange might cause it to pop out of proportion, but ultimately lends balance and stability to the work itself, in short, returning the composition to its original, harmonious whole in keeping with the subject matter. these original prints employ a color scheme that seems more reminiscent of 1980s Japanese pop art beer advertisements...

Contemporary Pattern and Decoration piece, The original movement was championed by the gallery owner Holly Solomon. The P&D movement wanted to revive an interest in minor forms such as patterning which at that point was equated with triviality. The prevailing negative view of decoration was one not generally shared by non-Western cultures, The Pattern and Decoration movement was influenced by sources outside of what was considered to be fine art. Blurring the line between art and design, many P&D works mimic patterns like those on wallpapers, printed fabrics, and quilts. There is a close connection between the Pattern and Decoration movement and the Feminist art movement. The P&D movement arose in opposition to the Minimalist and Conceptualist movements. Mary Grigoriadis, Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Miriam Schapiro, Robert Zakanitch were early proponents of this style. The artist lives and works in New York City.
