Why You Can Tell #2
By Robert Rauschenberg
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Why You Can Tell #2" from the suite "Nine Prints" is an original serigraph with offset lithograph and collage on Wove paper by American artist Robert Rauschenberg, 1925-2008. It is hand signed and numbered 36/100 in pencil by the artist. Published by Multiples, New York and Printed by Styria Studio, New York. With the blind stamp of the printer at lower left corner. The sheet size is 22.75 x 30 inches, framed is 43 x 34.25 inches. This particular artwork is held in several museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York. It is beautifully framed in a wooden gold frame, with fabric matting and color bevel. About the artist. Born in Port Arthur, Texas in 1925, Robert Rauschenberg imagined himself first as a minister and later as a pharmacist. It wasn't until 1947, while in the U.S. Marines, that he discovered his aptitude for drawing and his interest in the artistic representation of everyday objects and people. After leaving the Marines, he studied art in Paris on the G.I. Bill, but quickly became disenchanted with the European art scene. Rauschenberg's enthusiasm for popular culture and his rejection of the angst and seriousness of the Abstract Expressionists led him to search for a new way of painting. He found his signature mode by embracing materials traditionally outside of the artist's reach. He would cover a canvas with house paint, or ink the wheel of a car and run it over paper to create a drawing, while demonstrating rigor and concern for formal painting. By 1958, at the time of his first solo exhibition at the Leo Castelli Gallery, his work had moved from abstract painting to drawings like "Erased De Kooning" (1953) (which was exactly as it sounds) to what he termed "combines." These combines (meant to express both the finding and forming of combinations in three-dimensional collage) cemented his place in art history. As Pop Art emerged in the 1960s, Rauschenberg turned away from three-dimensional combines and began to work in two dimensions, using magazine...

'Hold that Tiger' — Mid-century American Surrealism
By Robert Vale Faro
Located in Myrtle Beach, SC
Robert Vale Faro, 'Hold that Tiger', color lithograph, 1945, edition 16. Signed, dated, titled, and numbered '91' and '15/16' in pen. A fine impression, with fresh colors, on heavy, coated, off-white wove paper; the full sheet with margins (13/16 to 1 1/2 inches), in excellent condition. Scarce. Matted to museum standards, unframed. Image size 14 x 9 3/8 inches (356 x 239 mm); sheet size 17 x 11 1/4 inches (432 x 285 mm). ABOUT THE ARTIST Robert Vale Faro (1902-1988) was a well-known modernist architect and artist associated with the Chicago Bauhaus. He received his degree in architecture and design from the Armour Institute in Chicago and worked at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, from 1924-27, where he was influenced by Harry Kurt Bieg and Le Corbusier. Upon his return to Chicago, Faro worked with the important modernist Chicago architects George and William Keck under Louis Sullivan. Faro founded the avant-garde printmaking group Vanguard in 1945. The group counted Atelier 17 artists Stanley William Hayter, Sue Fuller, and Anne Ryan as New York members and Francine Felsenthal of Chicago. The Brooklyn Museum mounted a show of Vanguard artists' work in 1946, which subsequently toured several other institutions in the United States. Faro's visionary graphics from the 1940s are a sophisticated blend of Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism, and Indian Space...

Goodbye Sharpie Dieter Roth black and white geometric abstract print
By Dieter Roth
Located in New York, NY
Dieter Roth Goodbye Sharpie, 1972 44.5 x 54.3 / 113 x 138 cm Planographic printing from zinc, white on dyed grey card Edition of 30, this copy marked "Artist's Copy" and annotated II/IV Dieter Roth was a printmaker from childhood: his first etching at the age of 16 was scratched into a soda can, and despite the failure of the can to print anything but a shadow of ink, he continued his study and by 20 was a serious apprentice in lithography to a well-known commercial artist, Eugen Jordi. Later he would continue to print and publish much of his own work. From the 1960s onward, his collaborations with Petersburg Press brought him international recognition and produced some of his most celebrated work: Six Piccadillies (1970), and Containers (1972). Interested in chance and spontaneity, Roth was drawn to make prints using unorthodox means: according to mathematical principles, using equations, or by randomly rearranging blocks before they were run through the press. The artist often printed plates repeatedly in different colors, producing many variations from just a few images. He used the printing press and materials to interrogate the creative process rather than just as tools to achieve an edition of identical prints: for example, overprinting or under-inking, or running objects through the press (in 1968, a box of chocolates). Roth was not just interested in the chance of making pictures but the unpredictability of decay: allowing the grease from slices of meat to slowly contaminate paper, immersing a print in vegetable juice, clamping metal to paper to produce rust, and pouring chocolate over a finished work. Roth would make hundreds of print editions and books over his career and blurred the line between genres and mediums, embarking on prodigious collaborations and experimentation with music, poetry...

By Leon Polk Smith
Located in New York, NY
Leon Polk Smith (1906 -1996) holds a unique place in a long tradition of American geometric abstract painting. Born near Chikasha, a Native American territory later annexed by the U.S. as the state of Oklahoma, Smith’s parents, who were of Cherokee ancestry, raised him with both a strong sense of his heritage and an abiding respect for the land. Art would eventually draw Smith to New York where he would quickly embrace elements of geometric abstraction in his work. Many of Smith’s hard-edge compositions could be viewed as distillations of imagery drawn from the Oklahoma landscape...

Basquiat at Tony Shafrazi gallery 1996 (Basquiat Dust Heads announcement)
By Jean-Michel Basquiat
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Jean-Michel Basquiat A TRIBUTE: Important Paintings, Drawings, & Objects: Vintage original 1990s Basquiat announcement card to: Jean-Michel Basquiat at Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York, September 21 - November 23, 1996. Cover image features a reproduction of Basquiat's Dust Heads (1982). Off-set printed gallery announcement. 7.5 x 6.25 inches (folded closed). Very good overall vintage condition. Some light rub marks to reverse. Published by Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York, 1996. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Jean-Michel Basquiat’s dramatic life and iconic paintings—which variously feature obsessive scribbling, enigmatic symbols and diagrams, and iconography including skulls, masks, and the artist’s trademark crown—make him one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. The self-taught painter embraced graffiti before committing to a studio practice. He found a mentor and friend in Andy Warhol, who helped the young artist navigate the 1980s New York art world. Across his oeuvre, Basquiat drew on his own Caribbean heritage; a convergence of African American, African, and Aztec cultural histories; classical themes; and pop cultural figures including athletes and musicians. The immediacy and intellectual depth of his paintings won him widespread acclaim both before and after his untimely death at the age of 27. Related Categories Basquiat Bruno Bischofberger. Spring 69
By Nancy Genn
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Spring 69" 1969 is an original color lithograph by American artist Nancy Genn, b. 1929. It is hand signed, titled and inscribed Artist Proof in pencil by the artist. The size is 23.75 x 34.65 inches. It is in excellent condition, it has very small marks in the back due to tape removal from previous framing, not visible from the front. About the artist: Nancy Genn is an American artist living and working in Berkeley, California known for works in a variety of media, including paintings, bronze sculpture, printmaking, and handmade paper rooted in the Japanese washi paper making tradition Her work explores geometric abstraction, non-objective form, and calligraphic mark making, and features light, landscape, water, and architecture motifs. She is influenced by her extensive travels, and Asian craft, aesthetics and spiritual traditions. Genn's first noted solo exhibition was in 1955 at Gump's Gallery in San Francisco. She received international recognition through her inclusion in French art critic Michel Tapié’s seminal text Morphologie Autre (1960), which cited her as one of the most important exponents of post-war informal art. Her abstract expressionist paintings of this period, continuing through the mid-1970s, featured all-over compositions of colorful layers of gestural brushwork and calligraphic mark making resembling asemic writing. In 1961, Genn began creating bronze sculptures using the lost-wax casting method. Influenced by noted sculptor and family friend Claire Falkenstein, who used open-formed structures in her work, Genn cast forms woven from long grape vine cuttings, and produced vessels, fountains, fire screens, a menorah, a lectern, and, notably, the Cowell Fountain (1966) at UC Santa Cruz. In 1963 her sculptural work was exhibited with Berkeley artists Peter Voulkos and Harold Paris in the influential exhibition Creative Casting curated by Paul J. Smith at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York. Genn was one of the first American artists to express herself through handmade paper, first receiving wide recognition via exhibitions at Susan Caldwell Gallery, New York, beginning in 1977, and in traveling exhibitions with Robert Rauschenberg and Sam Francis. In 1978-1979, supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and Japan Creative Arts Fellowship, she studied papermaking in Japan, visiting local paper craftspeople, working in Shikenjo studio in Saitama Prefecture,[5] and exhibiting her work in Tokyo. She also learned techniques from Donald Farnsworth...
