Contemporary Figurative Drawings and Watercolors
CONTEMPORARY STYLE
Used to refer to a time rather than an aesthetic, Contemporary art generally describes pieces created after 1970 or being made by living artists anywhere in the world. This immediacy means it encompasses art responding to the present moment through diverse subjects, media and themes. Contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, performance, digital art, video and more frequently includes work that is attempting to reshape current ideas about what art can be, from Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s use of candy to memorialize a lover he lost to AIDS-related complications to Jenny Holzer’s ongoing “Truisms,” a Conceptual series that sees provocative messages printed on billboards, T-shirts, benches and other public places that exist outside of formal exhibitions and the conventional “white cube” of galleries.
Contemporary art has been pushing the boundaries of creative expression for years. Its disruption of the traditional concepts of art are often aiming to engage viewers in complex questions about identity, society and culture. In the latter part of the 20th century, contemporary movements included Land art, in which artists like Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer create large-scale, site-specific sculptures, installations and other works in soil and bodies of water; Sound art, with artists such as Christian Marclay and Susan Philipsz centering art on sonic experiences; and New Media art, in which mass media and digital culture inform the work of artists such as Nam June Paik and Rafaël Rozendaal.
The first decades of the 21st century have seen the growth of Contemporary African art, the revival of figurative painting, the emergence of street art and the rise of NFTs, unique digital artworks that are powered by blockchain technology.
Major Contemporary artists practicing now include Ai Weiwei, Cecily Brown, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami and Kara Walker.

-ARTIST STATEMENT-
I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis
personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my
narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I
use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered
reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art
historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an
Everyman who is at odds with society and his self.
Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its
overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their
tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow
seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid.
This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world
through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light.

Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. "I started by painting interiors, being interested in space and perspective through my studies. These scenes evolved, when I added the human figure. I focused more on the human figure and its relation to the background. The human figure is more present than ever in my paintings now.
As a woman artist I’ve been preoccupied with the female form and its imagery. One of my goals was to capture the solitary moments and the nude’s relation to the surrounding space.
My interest turned from depicting the space to rendering the atmosphere and the scene as a whole, the feeling a woman adds to the environment: warmth, desire, joy, a feeling of power and control, or the opposite – sadness, despair.
Here is a collection of figurative paintings, exploring the nudes in interior spaces, seeing the nudes from my perspective, as a woman artist, considering the physical and spiritual realities of a woman’s body, in a new level of intimacy. The artist’s journey spans 21 years during which Céspedes has developed a unique style always revolving around two major themes: urban space and human bodies. “Dance inspires me. I love its contagious joy. I’m often carried away by the image of swing dancers on an endless journey, from partner to partner—a journey that started in Harlem and found its way across the world.”
As a self-taught artist, Céspedes’ work is an inspiring example of outsider art. Her life is a story of resilience. The artist was orphaned at thirteen and Céspedes was left to contend with life as the eldest of a family of seven in rural Andalucía. Her pursuit of art brought a meditative calm to her life but with no connection to the art world, Céspedes did not show her work as she developed her unique style.
Céspedes decided to infiltrate the artistic circle of Barcelona after years of solo creation. She joined the Agrupacion de Acuarelistas de Catalunya where masters helped her see the liberating power of abstract watercolor, with its ebbs and flows.
Céspedes’ work has been shown in more than 60 solo and collective exhibitions and awarded internationally.

Claus Sievert, (American, 1949–2009) nicknamed “The Tree Guy," was a German-born American printmaker and illustrator, who studied etching in an art college in Brunswick, Germany, in 1971. He began his career as an art teacher in Germany, teaching printmaking, art history, advertising design, and visual communication, and became a full-time artist in 1981.
Sievert created limited-edition etchings from copper plates and a hand-turned press which he then individually hand-colored.
Sievert’s work won awards, illustrated a children’s book by Leo Tolstoy, was commissioned by the Sierra Club and Golden Gate National Recreation Area to illustrate their publications, and he had his images published in several calendars. About the Artist: Itzchak Tarkay (Israeli, 1935–2012) was a painter known for his Post-Impressionist portraits done in watercolor and acrylic. Influenced by the work of both Henri Matisse and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Tarkay’s expressive, use of color lent a dream-like quality to his serigraphs, prints, and paintings. Born in 1935 in Subotica, Serbia, Tarkay and family settled in Israel after Allied forces freed them from a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. Ran paints with water colors, using a multilayer method, which creates an illusion of tempera. Ran came up with this technique herself, influenced medieval painters. Ran says that the reds, browns, and golds in most of her feminist works are inspired by the performing arts: the circus, clowns, acrobats, dancers, and the fantastic. Haya Ran doesn’t identify today with any particular artistic school. Her works are born out of personal experiences and feelings. They come from the remembrances of her past, of her life and her experiences as a child, and from the fantasies she entertains about them. Her subjects emanate from her private, inner world. Haya Ran focuses on the world of the female. Her women are a peculiar lot. Their dimensions are offer wide, distorted, and grotesque, yet their poses and settings are as enticing and charming as they are sexually arousing. Others of Haya Ran’s women remain attached to elements of a lost childish innocence; dolls, wooden horses, masks, and wooden birds. Her works are executed with watercolors on paper. Her technique resembles that of Renaissance tempera. She superimposes strata and blends them together to create the impression of a past era. She creates not by putting down on paper her sudden impulses, but by devoting painstaking attention to the smallest details over countless hours.

Isabel Rock is a creator of contemporary fairy tales. A graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, her work is an explosion of strange occurrences while a surreal narrative takes the audience on a journey into the imagination.
In October 2023 Isabel won the Evelyn Williams Drawing Award at the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize. Known as the UK’s most prestigious annual open exhibition for drawing; part of the prize is a solo show at Hastings Contemporary, scheduled for 2024.
Whilst Isabel always has a tale to tell for each of her images, you may or may not choose to go on the journey with her or you may indeed have a different story, one of your own that jumps off the page at you, that that you decide to follow.

Wheel of Fortune
Sometimes life is good and you are at the top, you feel that finally things are working out and that you deserve this success after many struggles. But just as you stride down the street with a spring in your step the wheel turns another click and you find yourself on the down again. Maybe you lost your wallet, made a mistake that cost you alot of money or your partner met someone more interesting. But do not fear, because the wheel of fortune is forever turning and soon you shall be at the top again like a king. Just make sure to enjoy it while you are there.
*Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube. Whilst the work is on heavy duty art paper and mixed media, the artist is happy that the painting will be fine rolled in a tube. About Isabel Rock and her work:
Taking inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints and Indian miniature painting Rock has developed a unique collage technique that combines bold structures with large-scale woodblock prints and intricate detailing. The subject is a grand mixture of humour, drama, hidden morals, fanciful characters, modern culture, mythical beings and fantastical situations.
Rock creates a world that pulls you in and demands your attention. Quality of line is paramount, the drawings are created using a dipping pen and acrylic ink. An essential tool is a squirrel’s hair brush that gives incredible fine lines and was purchased on her travels in India.
Born in Hammersmith, London in 1981, Rock knew her destiny was to be an artist. Studying Fine Art Printmaking at The University of Brighton and graduating with First Class Honours in 2004 she went on to do a Masters Degree at The Royal College of Art in London, continuing her studies in printmaking and drawing, graduating in 2008.
Her first solo show at Bearspace Gallery in Deptford, London in April 2009 sold out and was the beginning of a career that continues to rise. Rock participated in the first ever India Art Fair represented by Art 1821...
