This stunning British 18th century Old Master portrait oil painting, with exceptional provenance, is by noted artist George Romney. It was painted in 1788, commissioned by James Evelyn of Felbridge as it is of his younger daughter Anne, aged 20 years old. James was a Doctor of Law and Anne's mother was his second wife, Jane. Felbridge house, Anne's home, was in the village of Godstone in Surrey. This superb oil painting is a seated portrait of Anne, wearing a white dress with a green sash, her forearms exposed and her hands in her lap. Anne is blessed with the most wonderful long auburn curly hair and is visually stunning. Her body is partly turned away from the artist/viewer and she is slightly gazing down at us with confident, clear eyes. Anne is pictured in a landscape with a dramatic sky behind her. Romney's brushwork on her dress, hair and the background is superb. The delicate detailing of her facial features is also stunning. Sometimes Old Master portraits can be a little staid, but this one of Anne with her wild auburn hair and bold look is just magnificent. This is a fantastic example of George Romney's work and of an 18th century British Old Master with exceptional detailed provenance. This superb Dutch Golden Age portrait is attributed to circle of Dutch artist Wybrand Simonsz de Geest. Painted in 1666 it is a full length portrait of a young William Stonestreet. He is holding the paw of a clipped little white dog with drapes and clouds beyond. (It was common practise to dress young boys in dresses up to the age of about 6 or 7 when they were 'britched' or wore britches). Wybrand Simonsz. de Geest (16 August 1592 – c. 1661) was a Dutch Golden Age portrait painter from Friesland in the Netherlands. Wybrand de Geest was born and died at Leeuwarden. He learned painting from his father, Simon Juckesz, a stained glass worker. He studied later with Abraham Bloemaert. From 1614 to 1618 he travelled in France and Italy on a Grand Tour. In 1616 he met up with Leonard Bramer in Aix-en-Provence. While in Rome he became a member of the painters' circle known as the Bentvueghels. Provenance: Prato, Farsetti, auction of 28.10.2016, lot 261 (link) A majestic Madonna in Glory occupies the upper register of the canvas, seated on a blanket of iridescent clouds surrounded by angels, flanked by a cherub who scatters flowers contained in a cornucopia towards the infant Christ as a sign of abundance, naked and supported with both hands from the mother. In the lower part of the composition stands the figure of San Giacomo Maggiore, one of the twelve apostles, standing on the right side of the altarpiece, represented dressed in a humble tunic; one arm holds the open Gospel book, while the other holds a cross pilgrimage staff. A particular aspect of the table is the presence in the central part, to indicate its importance, of the figure of the donor, kneeling on a cushion, with his hands joined in prayer and his face observing the Virgin in an attitude of devotion, while on the opposite lectern is placed a prayer book; depicted with the features of a young leader in armor, with a sword and a rich iridescent red cloak, elements which, combined with his authoritarian composure, enhance his ennoblement. Unlike the medieval altarpieces, the knight is here included in the space of the painting and has proportionate dimensions to those of the other characters, returning to all intents and purposes in the sacred scene, with a pose that cannot but evoke the detail of the 'Montefeltro altarpiece' made by Piero della Francesca for Federico da Montefeltro, kneeling in front of the sacred group in the guise of a leader. On the right, the view recedes into depth highlighting the background of an urban landscape set on a hill behind which a mountain range stands out, with the peculiarity of the arched aqueduct that runs along the entire landscape. Presumably among these expanses were the donor's own possessions and his hometown. It is a quality table, imbued with the late Mannerist style still resistant in the second half of the 16th century, characterized by a 'sweet and affable religiosity, rendered through a manner of studied simplicity and grace', which highlights the unmistakable stylistic and chromatic connotations of the produced...

Essay: This captivating piece, originating from the studio of the revered Dutch artist Jacob Ochtervelt, mirrors the composition of a signed and dated 1669 canvas by Ochtervelt that is presently housed in the Hermitage museum. Its subject, "The Grape Seller" immerses us in a typical 17th-century interior, replete with characters from various strata of society. At the center, a fruit vendor is depicted bending over to weigh grapes for the buyer. A child hands some of the grapes to her mother to taste, their attentive maid standing by. The backdrop showcases typical Ochtervelt details: a hint of the city visible through the doorway, light filtering in through an overhead window, and a playful dog at their side. The exquisite quality of the piece is evident in the minutiae, such as the intricate detailing of the mother's earring, which in reality spans only a few millimeters yet boasts impressive attention to detail. Initially, Sotheby's considered this work to be an autograph piece by Ochtervelt. But due to some uncertainty, it was auctioned as Workshop of Jacob Ochtervelt. On the other hand, the esteemed Cabinet Turquin in Paris leans toward attributing the piece directly to Jacob Ochtervelt himself. The painting is framed in an authentic period frame, which has been delicately restored by Stockholm's Förgyllning och Bildhuggeri. The frame retains its age-old patina and, while in used condition, has minor imperfections adding to its charm. Another interesting thing worth to mention is the painting's provenance. A fine & large antique oil painting on canvas by Raimond Louis Lecourt (1882-1946), the cliffs at the Atlantic Ocean, Etretat, Normandy, France, circa 1910. Lecourt was the quintessential painter of scenes of Normandy France, this is a large and very fine example of his work. The painting depicts the Falaise d' Amont located near Etretat, Normandy, the Falaises (cliffs) are on the Atlantic coast and are a very impressive formation of flint cliffs with huge naturally created archways. The painting is beautifully rendered and in some areas the artist has employed impasto technique (thickly applied paint) to provide texture to the ocean & cliffs, in the foreground of the cliffs is a flock of herring gulls circling overhead. The painting is signed "Lecourt" lower right with a dedication, the painting is housed in the original sponge decorated gesso frame, also created by the artist. Condition is excellent, this charming painting is ready to hang on your wall. The artist was born in Le Havre, and studied at the National School of Fine Arts and the Regional School of Fine Arts of Rouen, he studied under Charles Lhuillier and Léon Bonnat. He received the Croix de Guerre 1914-1918 Military medal during WW1. Lecourt studied at the Le Havre School of Fine Arts under the direction of Charles Lhuillier , then with Léon Bonnat at the Paris School of Fine Arts . He then lived in Fontaine-la-Mallet , where he painted in the Normandy region, which was his favorite subject. In 1899, Lecourt obtained the honorary prize for the upper course with the city's silver medal. A municipal scholarship which allowed him to enter the Paris School of Fine Arts in the studio of the painter Léon Bonnat . There he found his comrades from Le Havre who had preceded him there: Othon Friesz , Raoul Dufy , the brothers René and Henri de Saint-Delis . He debuted at the Salon of French Artists in 1901 with his painting Le Herseur . He completed his studies in the studio of Luc-Olivier Merson and it was around this time that he got into the habit of spending his holidays in Fontaine-la-Mallet with his comrade Othon Friesz . He settled there permanently in 1907, after a trip to Brittany from where he brought back numerous sketches and portraits. During the First World War , he was mobilized on August 1, 1914 in the same regiment and behaved like a hero, decorated with the Croix de Guerre and the Military Medal . During an engagement at Courcy - Brimont , September 14, he was injured by a gunshot to the right forearm. He continued to draw with his left hand then, after a long rehabilitation, he regained the use of his right hand. He became a member of the Society of French Artists, also exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, and made regular submissions to the Salons. Many paintings by him appear in museums & galleries in Denmark , Germany, the United States, Japan, and in England where the "Dogs of the Duchess of Manchester" painting was exhibited and won Lecourt great acclaim. After the outbreak of World War II, Lecourt takes the German Occupation of France very badly. After General Philippe Petains's handshake with Hitler in Montoire-sur-le-Loir, he returned his military medal to the Chancellery, accompanied by this comment: "We have no need for decorations in a country which no longer has the sense of honor" During this period, he resided with Charles Toussaint, a Le Havre broker and companion from the 74th infantry regiment, at the Frescinet manor, a property which would disappear under the bombings of the September 11, 1944. At this time, he painted mainly on wood, as canvases were rare and expensive at this time. In the winter of 1943-1944, he was hit by a military truck which skidded on the ice, during the fighting for the liberation of the port of Le Havre, the village of Fontaine-la-Mallet, where he lived, was raised to the ground under heavy bombing. His house, his studio, his notes and sketches were destroyed. However he went back to work with courage, but something had broken inside him. The following winter, he caught a cold and contracted pneumonia which took him away in eight days, unable to be properly treated following the refusal of an American army colonel, to give to civilians penicillin that only the Americans had at the time. His friends mourned him and others said that he was a gifted painter of Cauchoise (Normandy) painting, and who knew so well how to render plough horses, Normandy cows...
