About the Item

"Fruit Bowl No. 1" is an abstact still-life Post War oil on canvas painting by Hans Hofmann in 1949. The artwork is 29 1/2 x 37 1/2 inches and with the frame is 38 1/8 x 46 1/8 x 3 1/4 inches, weighing less than 50 lbs. It is signed lower right, "Hans Hofmann". Hofmann played a pivotal role in the development of Abstract Expressionism and is one of the most important figures of Post War American art. He was influenced by Matisse’s use of color and Cubism’s displacement of form, developing an artistic approach and theory he called “push and pull,” which is described as the play between color, shape, and placement on a surface to create competing forces that produce depth within a flat surface. "Fruit Bowl No. 1" is a classic still life subject matter reimagined through abstraction. By Hans Hofmann
Located in Palm Desert, CA
"Song of Love" is an abstract Post-War oil painting on canvas created by Hans Hofmann in 1952. The artwork is 36.25 x 48.25 inches and is 45.25 x 57.25 x 2 inches with the frame, weighing less than 50 lbs. It is signed on the lower right, "Hans Hofmann" and also signed verso, "Hans Hofmann". Hofmann's art is characterized by its expressive use of color planes, often overlapping and intersecting to create a sense of tension and harmony simultaneously. With the delicate mark-making and use of negative space across the canvas, “Song of Love” is reminiscent of the automatic drawings and paintings of Surrealists Andre Masson and Joan Miró, blended with the drips of paint in the large blue swaths of the Abstract Expressionist style.
