Signed lower right: KANE Signed, titled, dated verso: Cindy Kane, Untitled, 1985 Cindy Kane (American, 1957-) grew up in Washington DC during the Vietnam War era, absorbing the period's powerful political climate. She is a self-taught artist whose multi media work is born out of a deep sense of connection to the political and environmental issues of our times. Her early work was influenced by the experience of living and working at the bottom of the Grand Canyon National Park, where she had the opportunity to document Anasazi Indian pictographs in pen and ink drawings. These images would inform her work for years to come. She draws on personal narrative and experience to create her paintings of maps, birds, toys, and artifacts from nature, often collaging bits of newspaper headlines, pieces of her children's homework, and pages of sheet music beneath layers of color and imagery. In a review of her work, author and critic John Loughery wrote; "Kane leads us into a peculiar netherworld, a hard to place area that's both reassuringly ancient, and anxiously modern. This oil painting from 1985 is priced at a fraction of the original price. It was in our storage area and we just decided to put it on sale at a price which is a fraction of the original price. These still life with illusion paintings were originally sold in New York City at the D&D building on 59th street. It was a building that only interior designers were allowed to shop at. the general public could only go in with their interior designer to select an item. This came from the Haller Gallery in that space. It was originally priced at $3500 when at the gallery in the D&D building in NYC. It is oil on canvas and in very subtle colors. The top right area of the canvas show slight lines of cracking to the paint. You can see that on one of the close up images. The pale thick colors (The illusions) give a 3d floating look. We have another Still Life with 4 Pears also on sale this week.

The estate of the artist Jean-Pierre Jouffroy, Paris. “The heart is an eye,” writes Nobel laureate Octavio Paz in an essay on Matta’s paintings. Matta creates a world coloured both by a sunny faith in the future and by visions of impending doom. Roberto Sebastian Echaurren Antonio Matta, who died aged 91 on 23 November 2002, was born in Santiago, Chile, on 11 November 1911 into a family with Spanish, French and Basque roots, and raised in an atmosphere of religiosity. By the age of 21 he had graduated and begun work as an architect, but his leisure time he devoted to sketching and painting. In 1933 he travelled to Europe for the first time, visiting Greece, Yugoslavia, Italy and other countries, and subsequently taking the initiative to collaborate with the architect, Le Corbusier. As time passed, however, Matta’s enthusiasm for a career in architecture waned, and he began to devote himself full-time to art, making early acquaintances with surrealists such as Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, André Breton and others. Between 1939 and 1948 Matta, like many of his artistic contemporaries, lived in self-imposed exile in the USA, but, after almost 10 years’ absence from Europe, he returned to make first Rome and then, a few years later, Paris his home. Throughout most of the rest of his life Matta commuted between his studio in Paris and his creative refuge in the monastery outside Rome. And it is here, in Italy, that he produced his greatest paintings.
