About the Item

Diego Rivera (1886–1957) was one of the founders of the Mexican muralist movement. After an extended stay in Europe, he returned to Mexico in 1921 and took on a full involvement in the ideological reconstruction of his post-revolutionary country. A militant painter, he used his art to promote a visual pedagogy that was both popular and political. Here, he created a highly symbolic piece (his initials D on the left, R on the right), a distillation of a graphic vocabulary he would later develop extensively in his works. On the left, a clenched fist. On the right, an open palm. Between the two, four stylized ears of wheat intersect around a red geometric motif. Two gestures, two states: resistance and offering. One for struggle, the other for fraternity. Together, they frame this agrarian coat of arms, where land and labor come to be inextricably linked. In 1922, Mexico, which a civil war had ravaged, regained a form of stability. Rivera became a member of the Mexican Communist Party and one of the official government painters. He participated in the muralist project promoted by the post-revolutionary state: to make history visible, public, and popular. The colors are vivid, and the forms are simplified. They recount the revolution 1910 and the civil war of 1911-1920. This image could be the study of a fresco, intended to be read in the social space. His most emblematic works, commissioned by the government, adorn the National Palace in Mexico City, where he painted The Epic of the Mexican People and the National School of Agriculture in Chapingo. In Rivera's work, signs are organized into a system of thought where art becomes a living archive of the collective history of Mexican resistance.
