Mary Cassatt is distinguished as one of the most important female painters in art history, as one of the few women and the only American to exhibit with the Impressionists. More than any of her contemporaries, she elevated the world of women into subjects of profound significance. This magnificent pastel, Smiling Sara in a Big Hat Holding Her Dog, showcases Cassatt's signature subject and her exceptional mastery of the medium.
By 1906, at the peak of her fame, Mary Cassatt began frequently employing Sara, a young golden-haired girl who was quite likely the granddaughter of former French president Emile Loubet. Sara's sweet face and good-natured demeanor made her a favored model who appeared in many of Cassatt's works, including Sara in a Green Bonnet at the Smithsonian of American Art Museum and a drawing titled Sara Wearing Her Bonnet and Coat at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
In this work, Sara and her loyal companion are rendered in a lovely range of rosy pinks, warm yellows and brilliant blues. Cassatt's virtuosic linework adds dynamic energy to certain parts of the composition and lush softness to others, especially Sara's face and hair. Radiating a charming vivacity and intimate warmth, this work embodies Cassatt's understanding of childhood innocence and her belief in the compelling individualism of women and girls.
Cassatt’s pastel work, inspired by her friend Edgar Degas, allowed her to layer color rapidly while capturing the fleeting nuances of expression. “I saw art then as I wanted to see it,” she once recalled after encountering Degas’s pastels in a Paris shop window. From the 1890s onward, pastel became her dominant medium, and by the early 20th century, she had fully harnessed its potential for expressiveness and luminosity. Pastel would ultimately emerge as the medium for which she achieved her greatest fame.
Born in 1844 near Pittsburgh, Mary Cassatt spent most of her life in France. She is likely the most important person in exposing the Impressionist movement to the Americas. Cassatt exhibited at the Salon and was invited by Edgar Degas in 1877 to join the Impressionist exhibitions, participating in 1879–81 and 1886 as the lone American in the group. Today, Cassatt remains one of the most towering female figures in art history, and her works are highly coveted by prestigious institutions and collectors. Major retrospective exhibitions of her work, both oil paintings and works on paper alike, have been held at the Musée d’Orsay, and the major 2024-25 exhibition organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Mary Cassatt at Work. Importantly, a counter-proof of our pastel is part of the collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
This work is included as no. 447 in the Cassatt Committee's revision of Adelyn Dohme Breeskin's catalogue raisonné of the works of Mary Cassatt.

Mary Cassatt
As one of just two females and the only American member of the original French Impressionist circle, Mary Cassatt stands out for her ability to capture scenes of domestic life in her paintings that her male contemporaries often did not encounter.
Where other Impressionists indulged in sensual or sensational scenes of Parisian women, Cassatt’s unique perspective allowed her to create intimate, true-to-life renderings of her subjects. She pushed the radical art movement further to capture tender, fleeting instants shared by women as mothers, daughters, sisters and friends. Between 1860 and 1865, she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and in December 1865, she sailed to Paris to study with the French painters Charles Chaplin and Jean-Léon Gérôme.
In 1868, Cassatt made her debut at the Paris Salon but returned to Philadelphia in 1870 with the onset of the Franco-Prussian war. However, by 1874 she had settled again in Paris, where she would live most of her adult life.
Just three years later, Cassatt met a man who would change the trajectory of her career forever: Edgar Degas. At his invitation, she joined a group that would become known as the Impressionists and, under his influence, developed a love for drawing and works on paper. Inspired by the "new painting," Cassatt abandoned her former academic manner and adopted Impressionism's high-keyed hues and modern subjects.
Best remembered for her intimate portrayals of women, children and the mother-child relationship, Cassatt was a vital contributor to the Impressionist circle. Today, her works can be found in important collections the world over, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington D.C.) and Musée d'Orsay (Paris).

Paul César Helleu is regarded among the most sought-after society portraitists of his era, and his Belle Époque works rival those of his contemporaries John Singer Sargent and Giovanni Boldini. He is best remembered for capturing the era's most beautiful socialites, including Consuelo Vanderbilt, the Duchess of Marlborough, the Comtesse de Loriol Chandieu and the Comtesse Mathieu de Noailles, among others. This work, however, stands out in that it captures the charming likeness of one of his art world cohorts, Mathilde See, a Parisian-born decorator and painter of floral still lifes. She is the essence of the modern woman, captured in her fashionable dress as she strolls along the flower-lined streets of Paris.
Commanding in size, Portrait de Mathilde See fully displays Helleu's mastery over the medium of pastel. The muted palette of greys and blues is typical of the artist, bringing a harmony and cohesiveness to the composition. Furthermore, Helleu cleverly alludes to See's own artistic output with a backdrop of vibrant floral blooms, enlivening the canvas and complementing the greens and blues of the peacock feather adorning her hat.
The portrait is all the more significant thanks to its provenance. It was previously in the collection of A. Alfred Taubman, one of America's most successful entrepreneurs and one-time owner of Sotheby's. Considering Taubman encountered some of the most noteworthy and beautiful works of art ever made through his auction house, the fact that he chose this portrait by Helleu to grace his collection is a testament to its import.
