Mid 20th century oil on canvas of a crowded harbour scene, showing the local fisherman or sailors saying farewell to their families before going to sea. The painting is signed bottom right but the artist remains as yet unidentified. A colourful yet slightly brooding and dreamlike painting. The figures are faceless and the shapes loose and undefined reminiscent of the works by Balthus who in turn was influenced by LS Lowry and his scenes of industrial districts. The colours are deep and glowing and the shapes of the figures are rounded giving a sense of warmth and evoking the quality of light seen at either dawn or dusk. Balthasar Klossowski de Rola (February 29, 1908 – February 18, 2001), known as Balthus, was a Polish-French modern artist. He is known for his erotically charged images of pubescent girls, but also for the refined, dreamlike quality of his imagery. Lowry is famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century. He developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures often referred to as "matchstick men".

His early adolescence was spent under Nazi oppression, in constant fear for the safety of his parents, who perished in the Holocaust in the Polish Auschwitz concentration camp. Naftali emigrated to Mandate Palestine in 1939, at the age of fourteen with a Youth Aliyah group. From 1943 to 1946, he studied art, painting and sculpture, at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem with Israeli painter Mordecai Ardon. He then spent three years studying in Paris. He was published by Editions Empreinte in Paris, France. They published, Jean Michel Folon, Sempe, Raoul Ubac, Raymond Savignac, Cesar, Bengt Lindstrom , Paul Aizpiri and many other modern masters. In addition to painting and sculpture, Bezem created murals, wall reliefs, tapestry wall hangings, and stained glass windows. His most famous public works include a wall relief at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem and the ceiling mural in the main reception room at the President's Residence, Jerusalem. Chassidic Man doing Kapparot with his sons. 12.6 x 9.8 canvas, 18 x 14 inches with frame. Simon Natan Karczmar (born November 1, 1903 in Warsaw , died 1982 in Safed ) - Polish and Israeli painter. He was born as Szmaja Karczmar, he studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts. He earned a living by importing fur from Russia, which he sold to a cousin who was a furrier. With time, he gained a lot of experience and became an excellent sorter. In 1929 he left for Paris , where he continued his studies in painting. In 1931 he met Nechuma ( Nadia) from Poland, whom he married. Because it was difficult to support the family out of the sale of paintings, he returned to the sorter's work, and his wife started working at perfume Les Lilas in one of the suburbs of Paris. During the Second World War, the persecution of Jews also affected France, so in 1941 he and his family left for Nice. Shortly thereafter the father of Nechuma was denounced to the Gestapo and murdered by a German militiaman. Nechuma was arrested and transported to Auschwitz , Simon joined the partisans at that time. After the war, Nechuma returned to France and reopened perfume. In 1951, the Karczmarów family decided to emigrate to Israel, Simon and his brother-in-law ran a metallurgical plant, but because of losses they had to shut it down. In 1955 they were invited by a friend to Canada, they lived in Montreal where Simon worked again as a fur sorter. In 1959 he got allergies and had to abandon his previous job, he was depressed due to bad financial situation. Simon Karczmar began to paint in a naive way memories of childhood, thanks to which he managed to give them an authentic character and show those places and times through the eyes of a child. His work received positive reviews, he had an individual exhibition at an art gallery in Montreal. In 1960, together with his wife, he left Canada and left for Mexico, where Simon co-organized the Museum of Film Art. At the Centro Deportivo there was a second individual exhibition of his works, and after that he was invited to exhibit paintings in two other galleries. He also received a job offer in the United States and Canada. In 1962 he went to Israel again, where he settled in the art colony in Safed and studied new painting techniques. Although he left France for Israel most of his work evokes his experiences in Eastern Europe. He traveled many times to New York , where he eagerly spent the winter. He died in Safed when he was 79 years old. The artist’s description: This painting is referring to people living in beautiful golden cages since they are captivated by stereotypes of bohemian lifestyle, and when they leave these cages they don’t know how to use their beautiful strong wings. They are not capable to exist outside and walk far away from their cages, which is why their wings snugly fit their bodies almost hiding and guarding their real beauty from the gossiping society. The middle right figure is Medusa Gorgon and right next to her covering her with his huge wing is her lover Poseidon. The Ancient Greek myth about Medusa says that she was one of the trio Gorgon sisters, the only immortal one. Medusa Gorgon is famed for her snake like hair and her gaze which turns those who look at her into stone. Medusa was once a beautiful priestess of Athena, Goddess of war and wisdom. When Gorgon had a love affair with God of the sea and earthquakes Poseidon, Athena punished her. The Goddess of War turned Medusa into a hideous creature making her hair into writhing snakes and her skin was turned a greenish blue. From that day on Medusa Gorgon became a monster we all now know. Two figures next to Medusa and Poseidon are Stheno and Euryale. They are sisters of Medusa who witnessed everything, but chose to stay in the shadow covering their faces with their wings. And finally the bottom figure is Hermès, God of commerce and thieves who helped Athena and Perseus to kill Medusa Gorgon. For me this myth represents some aspects and stereotypes of Bohemian lifestyle, people hiding themselves from judgment and gossip, at the same time putting themselves into golden cages..
