Floral Still Life with Blue Vase and Mirror in Acrylic on Paper
Bright still life by acclaimed bluegrass musician Katherine "Kathy" Kallick (American, b. 1952). A dark blue vase with a flower arrangement sits on a trunk with a tablecloth. There is also a smaller yellow bottle alongside. A mirror leans in a corner, reflecting part of the scene. This composition has a cubist feel, with somewhat exaggerated angles and lines.

ARTHUR BOYD HOUGHTON

Sunday Afternoon
Signed l.l.: Houghton
Oil on canvas
Framed
20.5 by 25.5 cm., 8 by 10 in.
(frame size 30.5 by 34.5 cm., 12 by 13 ½ in.)
Provenance:
William Drummond;
Private collection.
Probably painted in 1864, the present work evokes the peaceful contentment of everyday family life, with its small scale further reinforcing the intimacy of the scene. It is one of a series of small intimate family scenes produced during this happy period of his life. A male figure, possibly the artist’s himself, slumbers in a chair, a handkerchief draped over his face whilst Susan, the artist’s young wife reads by the window. Their child, either Arthur or Georgina, plays on the floor with a discarded newspaper. The room is at 4 Adelaide Villas, St Mary’s Grove, Richmond, the house Arthur and Susan moved to shortly after their marriage in 1861. The chaise and window, with its pots of geraniums, also feature in the 1864 painting Coach and Horses (private collection) which depicts Susan, with her hair down, playing with Arthur and Georgina. A pot of daffodils placed beside the same geraniums in the present work suggest it may have been painted in the spring of that year. Such domestic bliss would shortly come to a tragic end when Susan died of pyaemia following the birth of their third child in June 1864.
Houghton was born in India, the son of a captain in the East India Company’s marine service. Both is father and older brother were accomplished military draughtsmen and he probably received early training from them. His family returned to England in the early 1850s and he began studies at Leigh’s and the Langham...

Walkman
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The painting is about a brand of popular portable audio players manufactured and marketed by Sony since 1979. The original Walkman was a portable cassette player and its popularity made "Walkman" an unofficial term for personal stereos of any producer or brand.
By 2010, when production stopped, Sony had built about 200 million cassette-based Walkmans. The Walkman brand was extended to serve most of Sony's portable audio devices, including DAT players, MiniDisc players/recorders, CD players (originally Discman then renamed the CD Walkman), transistor radios, mobile phones, and digital audio/media players.

The Grape Seller - Workshop of Jacob Ochtervelt
Located in Stockholm, SE
Jacob Ochtervelt (Workshop)
The Grape Seller
oil on canvas
unframed: 80.7 x 61 cm.; 31 ¾ x 24 in.
framed: 109.5 x 89 cm.; 43 1/8 x 35 in.
Essay:
This captivating piece, originating from the studio of the revered Dutch artist Jacob Ochtervelt, mirrors the composition of a signed and dated 1669 canvas by Ochtervelt that is presently housed in the Hermitage museum. Its subject, "The Grape Seller" immerses us in a typical 17th-century interior, replete with characters from various strata of society.
At the center, a fruit vendor is depicted bending over to weigh grapes for the buyer. A child hands some of the grapes to her mother to taste, their attentive maid standing by. The backdrop showcases typical Ochtervelt details: a hint of the city visible through the doorway, light filtering in through an overhead window, and a playful dog at their side.
The exquisite quality of the piece is evident in the minutiae, such as the intricate detailing of the mother's earring, which in reality spans only a few millimeters yet boasts impressive attention to detail. Initially, Sotheby's considered this work to be an autograph piece by Ochtervelt. But due to some uncertainty, it was auctioned as Workshop of Jacob Ochtervelt. On the other hand, the esteemed Cabinet Turquin in Paris leans toward attributing the piece directly to Jacob Ochtervelt himself.
The painting is framed in an authentic period frame, which has been delicately restored by Stockholm's Förgyllning och Bildhuggeri. The frame retains its age-old patina and, while in used condition, has minor imperfections adding to its charm.
Another interesting thing worth to mention is the painting's provenance. It was once owned by the 1st Viscount Rothermere (1868-1940), the founder of the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror...

School Boy
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"School Boy" invites viewers to step into the vibrant realm of a young child's imagination. The artwork skillfully portrays the boy's innocence and his sense of wonder as he embarks on the journey of education. The choice of a school bag as a symbol not only signifies his pursuit of knowledge but also represents the responsibilities and expectations placed upon him.
The young boy is depicted sitting on a chair, which becomes his temporary throne, a metaphorical representation of the world he occupies. His posture exudes a sense of confidence, suggesting that he is ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead. The colorful background serves as a reflection of the boy's optimistic outlook, emphasizing his excitement for the adventures awaiting him within the classroom.
While "School Boy" is visually striking, it also invites viewers to delve deeper into its underlying symbolism. The artwork subtly hints at the transformative power of education and its potential to shape young minds. The choice of a chair as the boy's seat symbolizes the notion of learning, growth, and progress. The vibrant colors surrounding him further represent the diverse opportunities and experiences that education offers.
Furthermore, the absence of other figures in the artwork draws attention to the solitary nature of the boy's journey. It highlights the individualistic nature of education, emphasizing the personal responsibility each child carries to harness their potential.
