Portrait of a Gleaner - British Victorian art harvest portrait oil painting
By James John Hill
Located in London, GB
This absolutely lovely British Victorian oil painting is by noted Birmingham born artist James John Hill and has some excellent provenance below. The painting actually stayed in Birmingham for many years, hanging in Heathfield Hall, the former residence of inventor and engineer James Watt, but owned at that time by Thomas Pemberton. It then moved to Berwick House in Shropshire. Entitled The Gleaner and painted in1863, it is a charming half length portrait of a young woman with a sheaf of wheat under her arm. She is stood beneath trees and the wheat field is beyond. She is dressed in a lovely pink garment and wearing a brown felt hat, to shade her face from the sun, her dark hair cascading down her shoulder, The hat is decorated with a poppy. The soft tones and sympathetic rendering of the young woman make this a stunning 19th century oil painting with excellent provenance.
The painting is housed in its original gilt frame with a beautiful oak leaf motif.
Signed and dated 1863 lower left.
Provenance. Thomas Pemberton, Heathfield Hall, Handsworth, Birmingham.
(Heathfield Hall was the former residence of the inventor and engineer James Watt. Following his death the house had several occupiers including local luminaries Thomas Pemberton and George Tangye).
His sale, Christie's, 30 April 1874, lot 95 (69gns to James Watson) Berwick House, Shropshire.
(James Watson (1817-1895) was an English merchant, dairy herdsman and Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1892)
Condition. Oil on canvas, 34 inches by 28 inches unframed, in good condition.
Frame. Housed in its original gilt frame with oak leaf motif, 42 inches by 36 inches and in good condition.

Fording the River Landscape British Master Nasmyth 19th century Oil Painting
Located in Stockholm, SE
Signed lower right "Nasmyth" leading to one of the whole pleiad of renowned Scottish artists starting with Alexander Nasmyth (1758 -1840). This painting showcases a scene of a landscape with shallow water, where a family is seen wading through a river ford in knee-deep water. The presence of a shepherdess on a high bank, observing the travelers with keen interest, adds a sense of pastoral charm to the composition. One of the focal points of the painting is a picturesque tree that has fallen into the river, adding a touch of drama to the overall scene. The contrast between the lush woodland and bushes on the right side of the foreground and the rolling valley on the left side further enhances the depth and perspective of the painting and superbly illustrates the traditions of the early 19th century British Art...

Thomas Luny (1759–1837), born in Cornwall, probably at St Ewe, was an English artist and painter, mostly of seascapes and other marine-based works. At the age of eleven, Luny left Cornwall to live in London. There he became the apprentice of Francis Holman, a marine painter who would have a great and long lasting artistic influence on Luny: Luny remained until 1780 in Holman's London studio, which, was first situated in Broad Street, St. George's, and later relocated to Old Gravel Lane. Examples of his work are exhibited at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter, and at The Mariners' Museum in Newport...

Mother dog and her puppies, 19th Century French Barbizonf armhouse painting
Located in Norwich, GB
An charming 19th century dog painting depicting a mother dogue and her exuberant topsy turvy pups by the farmhouse barns or cowsheds , with a young child given them a fuss!
Dating from ca 1860-70, the oil on canvas is unsigned, but bears on the verso a rather special stamp from colour and artists supplies merchant Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922). Paul Durand-Ruel is known as the legendary art dealer who launched, almost single handedly, the Impressionist movement. He represented Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Renoir in his Paris, London and New York Galleries.
Like his father Jean Marie Durand, Durand Ruel had started as both a merchant of art supplies, and dealer. Often, these two activities overlapped, as he would supply cash strapped artists who left paintings as security. Paul Durand Ruel was one of the first to discover Barbizon artist...

Amercan Merchant Ship in Philadelphia Harbor
By Thomas Birch
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Thomas Birch is considered one of the earliest American Marine painters of importance both in his own time and historically, forming the foundation of what would become a great American Maritime movement in the successive years of the 19th century.
Born in England, Birch started as a landscape painter but after the War of 1812 he turned to marine subjects, taking inspiration from the best of both English and Dutch maritime traditions but refining these techniques into a very recognizable style all his own.
The work featured here is a classic of Birch's later period, when he focused specifically on maritime subjects, mainly the busy waterways of Philadelphia Harbor. Here we see one of those scenes- a series of ships plying their trade, all framed by the city as it sits across the Delaware River, with the tall, white spire of what is either Independence Hall or Christ Church to the left of the main vessel. The details of the city are particularly good in this painting, with the wharf building to the left and the long line of buildings all along the shore.
The American Merchant Bark at the center of this painting is rendered in excellent detail, from her house flag and pennant, to her rigging and sails, and down to her deck filled with the activity of crewmembers readying the ship to head out, her gilt billet...

'A Three-Masted Frigate off Capri', 19th Century Seascape, Royal Naval Museum
By Carl Frederik Sørensen

A serene marine painting from the artist’s late period showing both his unerring compositional sense and his mastery of light and perspective.
Inscribed lower right, "Carl Sorensen" for Carl Frederick Sorensen (Danish, 1818-1879) and dated 1863.
In 1848, Sorensen was commissioned by the Danish Government as the official naval artist to accompany the Royal Danish Navy on an official tour of the Mediterranean and to make a series of studies of the trip. The inspiration that Sorensen derived from this expedition led him to return to Capri every summer for the remainder of his life and also inaugurated his career as Denmark’s preeminent marine painter. Sorensen received many honors and awards during his lifetime and his work may be found in the permanent collections of museums worldwide, including a substantial collection at the Royal Naval...

Fontainebleau landscape with walkers
Oil on canvas
21.5 x 31 cm
Framed : 32 x 41.5 cm
In good condition, some minor lacks of paintingsdue to a former frame abrasion mainly on the right border and in the lower border (see photographs please)
This landscape is probably a view of the Fontainebleau forest. This type of scene was painted by the Barbizon painters and by Camille Corot.
The village of Barbizon is very close to the forest of Fontainebleau and the painters who lived there, such as Camille Corot, painted the most picturesque views of the spectacular stone quarries. There were also many walkers and hikers in these places, as the artists had made them famous and fashionable.
The author of this charming little painting wanted to depict the wildness of the place and, in contrast, the walkers who made it a pittoresque curiosity.
Although it's difficult to identify or ascribe the work, as there's no signature or other indication, there's a great deal of sensitivity and self-confidence in a very lively touch that heralds Impressionism.
The detail of the barely sketched silhouettes...
