Impressionist Landscape Paintings

IMPRESSIONIST STYLE

Emerging in 19th-century France, Impressionist art embraced loose brushwork and plein-air painting to respond to the movement of daily life. Although the pioneers of the Impressionist movement — Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir — are now household names, their work was a radical break with an art scene led and shaped by academic traditions for around two centuries. These academies had oversight of a curriculum that emphasized formal drawing, painting and sculpting techniques and historical themes.

The French Impressionists were influenced by a group of artists known as the Barbizon School, who painted what they witnessed in nature. The rejection of pieces by these artists and the later Impressionists from the salons culminated in a watershed 1874 exhibition in Paris that was staged outside of the juried systems. After a work of Monet’s was derided by a critic as an unfinished “impression,” the term was taken as a celebration of their shared interest in capturing fleeting moments as subject matter, whether the shifting weather on rural landscapes or the frenzy of an urban crowd. Rather than the exacting realism of the academic tradition, Impressionist paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings represented how an artist saw a world in motion.

Many Impressionist painters were inspired by the perspectives in imported Japanese prints alongside these shifts in European painting — Édouard Manet drew on ukiyo-e woodblock prints and depicted Japanese design in his Portrait of Émile Zola, for example. American artists such as Mary Cassatt and William Merritt Chase, who studied abroad, were impacted by the work of the French artists, and by the late 19th century American Impressionism had its own distinct aesthetics with painters responding to the rapid modernization of cities through quickly created works that were vivid with color and light.

Artist Bio Marc Dalessio was born in 1972 in Los Angeles, California. Even in his earliest years, it was evident that his passion was art. In 1989 he started at the University of California at Santa Cruz where he focused on both art and biology. During his time in Santa Cruz, Marc experimented with different schools of painting and spent much of his spare time studying the history and culture of the profession. He finished his outstanding academic career, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, in 1992. After university, Marc moved to Florence, Italy, where he spent the next eight years developing his style and refining his technique. Initially, Marc studied under Svetlan Kracsyna at Il Bisonte International School of Graphic Arts, where he earned a master printmaker degree. From there he went on to train as a portraitist at a small traditional painting atelier. Marc has emerged as a true master of his craft. Whether his work depicts an Indian landscape or an Italian businessman, the lines and color in his paintings attempt to reveal the nature of his subjects. In his portraits, he works to find the essence of the model, trying to use the true character of the individual to decide the mood of the painting. His plein air landscapes, which range in subject from exotic locations around the world to his own backyard, attempt to capture both the present and the history of the environment, touching the soul with his own unique view of the scenery. In all his works, his dedication to light and color, and the subtly of his subjects, enraptures even the most casual observer. Ryabushki Village and Church, Original oil Painting, Ready to Hang
Located in Granada Hills, CA
Artist: Shapoval Ivan Leontyevich Work: Original oil painting, handmade artwork, one of a kind Medium: Oil on Cardboard Style: Impressionism Year: 2008 Title: Ryabushki Village and Church Size: 16.5" x 24.5" x 0.2'' inch, (41x62x3 cm) Unframed, "Ryabushki Village and Church" is a captivating oil painting that beautifully captures the essence of a serene landscape. The composition centers around a church that stands prominently in the foreground, with signs of ongoing construction evident. The artist skillfully portrays the architectural details of the church, showcasing its partially completed walls and scaffolding, indicating a work in progress. Surrounding the church, verdant green trees gracefully frame the scene, their lush foliage adding a touch of vibrancy and life to the composition. The carefully rendered trees create a sense of depth and invite the viewer to explore the painting further. The sky, portrayed in a soft palette of whites, exudes a tranquil ambiance, providing a calm backdrop to the architectural elements and nature. The simplicity of the white sky allows the viewer to focus their attention on the central subject, the church, and the harmonious interaction between man-made structures and the natural world. The overall atmosphere of the painting is one of stillness and anticipation, capturing a moment in time when a village church is undergoing its transformation. The title, "Ryabushki Village and Church," hints at the rural setting, inviting viewers to imagine the quaint and idyllic village that the church is nestled within. With masterful brushwork, the artist has created a captivating landscape that balances the beauty of nature with the human endeavor of constructing a sacred space. "Ryabushki Village and Church" invites viewers to contemplate the passage of time, the intersection of tradition and progress, and the inherent beauty found in the convergence of man and nature. Beach day, Original oil Painting, Handmade, Ready to Hang
Located in Granada Hills, CA
Artist: Shapoval Ivan Leontyevich Work: Original oil painting, handmade artwork, one of a kind Medium: Oil on Canvas Style: Impressionism Year: 2006 Title: Beach day Size: 21.5" x 30.5" x 0.8'' inch, (54x78x3 cm) Unframed, Stretched on Wooden Bar, Gallery Wrapped, Ready to Hang. "Beach Day" is an enchanting oil painting that captures the serene beauty of a beach nestled within a lush forest landscape. The artist skillfully portrays the scene with a masterful blend of colors and textures, creating a captivating visual experience. The focal point of the painting is the idyllic beach, stretching out gracefully along the foreground. The sandy shoreline is depicted with delicate brushstrokes, conveying its soft and inviting nature. The beach seamlessly merges into a dense forest that surrounds it, creating a harmonious juxtaposition of land and sea. The artist deliberately chooses to depict the beach and forest with a sense of anonymity, using silhouettes instead of intricate details for the people present. This artistic decision allows viewers to project themselves into the scene, immersing themselves in the tranquil ambiance of the setting. The silhouettes, suggestive of figures engaged in various beach activities, evoke a sense of leisure, relaxation, and joy. The sky above is rendered in a pristine white, creating a serene and ethereal atmosphere. The absence of specific details in the sky allows the viewer's imagination to wander, envisioning a limitless expanse of possibility and potential. Overall, "Beach Day" is a breathtaking landscape painting that encapsulates the harmonious coexistence of nature and human presence. It invites viewers to immerse themselves in the peaceful ambiance of the beach, evoking a sense of tranquility and wonder. The artist's masterful technique and deliberate choices in composition make this painting a true visual delight, a testament to the beauty found in nature's embrace.
