Danseuses a la barre - Impressionist Figurative Pastel - Pierre Carrier-Belleuse
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed figurative pastel on canvas circa 1910 by French genre painter Pierre Carrier-Belleuse. The work depicts three ballerinas wearing white tutus, warming up in a studio. Carrier-Belleuse was a contemporary of Edgar Degas and they exhibited simultaneously at the major Salons in Paris. This classic example evokes the Belle Epoque period in french history and is superbly executed. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 29"x24" Unframed: 26"x21" Provenance: Private French collection Pierre Carrier-Belleuse studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Alexandre Cabanel and the interior decorative artist Pierre Victor Galland. He started out as an oil painter and produced genre compositions, such as his Final Rendezvous. From 1885, however, he opted to work exclusively in pastel, producing a large number of sketches and portraits but always remaining faithful to his earlier genre compositions. Examples include Pierrot, Harlequin, Woman with Cat. The periodical Figaro Illustré published a large number of his sketches of dancers, a recurrent theme throughout his work. From 1875, Pierre Carrier-Belleuse exhibited frequently at the Paris Salon, receiving an honourable mention in 1887 and being awarded a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. Monumental Surrealist Pastel, Of Course We Evolve But Does Anything Ever Change?
Located in Cotignac, FR
Surrealist, figurative large scale pastel of a deconstructed head and other elements by Gordon Muir. With original exhibition title label. Presented in fine silvered wood and fabric custom frame, under glass. A magnificent and truly monumental work of a 'deconstructed' head and three other triptych elements. Influenced by the paintings of Francis Bacon and Salvador Dali the work is intriguing and arresting at the same time. We can see how Muir gained such success later for his sculptural pieces as he is even in this work thinking in three dimensions. On closer inspection the details reveal themselves, the eyeball reminiscent of the shell of a horse chestnut, the furry surface to the tongue all in soft pastel shades. The three upper elements, in monochrome revealing the development of man. A really intriguing and strong painting that would grace any interior and be the talking point of any collection. It is very unusual to find a pastel of these proportions. The medium itself gives the work a softness creating an intriguing juxtaposition to the subject itself. Sculptor, born in Hawick, Gordon Muir was educated at art colleges in London, Scotland and the University of New Mexico, after which he spent time working with woodblock artists in Japan. He has more recently concentrated his artistic endeavours on sculpture, much of this in collaboration with the Paul Hogarth...

Contemporary French Fauvist Impressionist Landscape, Le Crépuscule. Pastel.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Contemporary Fauvist Impressionist pastel of colourful landscape by Belgian artist Francis Besson. Signed to the very bottom right and presented in a custom white wood and patinated frame. A magnificent colourscape of reds, russets, blues, oranges and black. Whirls of colour shape this gorgeously sumptuous pastel of a landscape. The contrast between colour, light and shade make for a wonderfully impactful composition. The use of pastel softens the whole effect and gives an impressionistic feeling. Besson was born in Dundee (Scotland) in 1943 however as a young child moved to Belgium where he later became famous as an actor. His family kept a second home in Cotignac in Provence which he visited often until finally going to live there himself in the early 2000s. Francis Besson now lives and works in the beautiful village of Cotignac in Provence in the south of France. His often impressionistic almost pointillist work is inspired by the nature he sees around him in this lovely part of the world. The intensity of the light , the rocks and forests of Provence all feature in his paintings. He is known for both landscapes and abstract works and has often collaborated with other local artists. Ballerina in the dressing room
Located in Berlin, DE
Karl Stohner (1894 Mannheim - 1957 Paris), Ballerina in the dressing room, 1924. Pastel on painting cardboard, 65 x 45 cm, 77,5 x 59,5 (frame), signed lower left "Stohner" and dated "[19]24". Behind glass in gold stucco frame of the time. - Painting cardboard slightly warped, in the lower area minimally stained, frame with age patina and traces of abrasion. - The Naturalness of Artificiality - We see a ballerina putting on her right ballet shoe while the left one is still lying on the floor in front of her. It is precisely the casualness of the scene that gives it its intimacy: the blonde young woman is completely absorbed in the activity of getting ready for the dance, oblivious to us, while we are positioned right in front of her in the dressing room, inaccessible to the audience, watching her dress. Even though she does not yet perform a dance step, there is a graceful elegance in the action shown that seems quite natural in contrast to the rehearsed art form of dance. The young woman is not presenting herself to an audience in a perfectly formed movement, but is performing an everyday action, unaware that she is being watched. Concentrated, almost devotional, she pulls the ballet slipper over the verses, not noticing that one of the straps of the tutu has slipped off her shoulder, reinforcing the erotic moment of the scene. Inspired by Edgar Degas, Karl Stohner has painted the scene in strong pastel tones. The dominant blues and turquoises give the scene a magical, mysterious quality and, like the pink of the stockings and ballet slippers, are borrowed from Degas's dancers. Degas's colors, however, are cooler tempered, which is particularly evident in the light impasto applied incarnate. This is where the vividness of Auguste Renoir comes into play, making the dancer seem entirely flesh and blood. Karl Stohner, who has studied the pastels of Degas and Renoir intensively, combines the two artists here to create his own pictorial language. He has laid out the background in broad layers of strokes, ranging in color from white to turquoise to dark blue. The result is a dynamic, pattern-like structure that contrasts with the woman's calm, inward-looking posture. The fund anticipates the dynamics of the choreography of the dance for which the ballerina is preparing. At the same time, the broad pastel line in the background is an adequate means of painting to depict the soft, flowing elegance of the dancer. About the artist Against the wishes of his wealthy parents, Karl Stohner decided to become a painter. His talent was discovered by the director of the Mannheim Art Gallery, Fritz Wichert, who supported him from then on, including financing study trips to Paris. There he discovered the art of Degas, Cézanne and Renoir, which inspired his work.

A Pastel Painted 1886 Called A Summer's Day on Hornbæk Beach
Located in Stockholm, SE
Frants Henningsen (1850-1908) Denmark A Summer's Day on Hornbæk Beach, 1886 pastel on canvas unframed 41 x 33 cm (16.14 x 12.99 inches) framed 56 x 49 cm (22.05 x 19.29 inches) hand made oak frame by Stockholms Bildhuggeri Provenance: A Swedish private collection Comparable sales: Christie's London British and European Art, 15 jul 2021 Lot 130, Frants Henningsen - A Summer's Day on Hornbæk Beach 1884 Price realised 43,750 GBP (605,000 SEK) Essay: We are pleased to present a striking pastel by the Danish artist, Frants Henningsen (1850-1908), titled "A Summer's Day on Hornbæk Beach" dated 1886. The scene is from Hornbæk Beach in Denmark, featuring a beach with some pooled water, a few green grass plants, followed by the sea with sailboats, and land visible on the horizon. The water reflection in the puddle on the beach and in the sea is exceptionally beautiful, reflecting the sky, which has a few clouds. This is a motif that the artist revisited several times during the 1880s, including a larger oil painting executed in 1884, sold at Christie's in 2021, and another one from 1883 in the museum collection: The Hirschsprung Collection, Copenhagen. Our pastel is undoubtedly the brightest of those we could find; it is strikingly beautiful and in exceptionally good condition. The artwork comes in a beautiful handmade oak gold frame by Stockholms Bildhuggeri. About Frants Henningsen: Frants Peter Diderik Henningsen was a Danish painter, illustrator, and professor. His paintings often depict unfortunate occurrences in the lives of middle-class people living in Copenhagen during challenging times. Although connected with Denmark's more traditional realist school, he faced criticism from some of his more reactionary contemporaries, especially Karl Madsen, who objected to his appointment as a professor at the Academy in 1887. Erik Henningsen, also an artist, was his younger brother. Henningsen graduated from Borgerdyd School in Christianshavn, attended C.V. Nielsen's drawing school, and then completed his studies at the Danish Academy in 1875. He studied at Léon Bonnat's school in Paris from 1877 to 1878 and traveled to Spain with Peder Severin Krøyer, Frans Schwartz...
