PROVENANCE Sale: Sotheby´s Olympia London, 20 October 2006 Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. In this work Grau Sala has a loose, subtle brushstroke, in which the color shapes the entire work. The bright and transparent whites that give life to young schoolgirls contrast with the brushstrokes of blacks from the nun who accompanies them. The explosion of greens is refreshing, it surrounds us and transports us to an idyllic place, even if it is a citizen boulevard, which becomes friendly and beautiful. Signed lower left, 'Mogens Hertz' (Danish, 1909-1999) and painted circa 1955. This Danish Impressionist artist first studied with the classically-trained Academician, Laurits Ring and, subsequently, with the notable Danish photographer and Impressionist painter, Rostrup Boyesen. After an influential study trip to Paris in 1930, Hertz continued his formal studies at the Charlottenborg Academy before moving from Copenhagen to the idyllic countryside outside Gudhjem. There, he became a founding, and leading, member of the Bornholm School and his work came to exemplify the group's lyrical portrayal of landscapes, painted in a loose and painterly, Impressionist style that can often border on abstraction. From 1930-1941, Hertz traveled and studied widely, including in France, Holland, German, Norway and Sweden. He was the recipient of numerous prizes and juried awards including the August Schiøtt scholarship (1948) and the Frederik Sødring prize (1939). He also exhibited widely and with success including, for many years, at the Royal Danish Academy's Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition (from 1937), Sweden (1980), Bornholm Art Museum (1985) and the Vejen Art Museum (1983). Mogens Hertz is well-listed in art biographical reference works including Benezit. Signed lower left, 'Thall V' for Victor Thall (American, 1902-1983) and painted circa 1950. A mid-century, American abstract oil comprising complex, contiguous and superimposed, linear and ovoid forms painted with an energetic and painterly brush in primary and secondary colors in both pure and pastel tints. Born in New York in 1902, Victor Thall first attended the Art Students League in New York City where he studied under Arthur B. Davies, George Bellows, John Sloan and Robert Henri. He furthered his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before leaving for Paris, in 1924, to attend the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Academie Julien. He remained in France for six formative years before returning to the United States in the early 1930's. Back in New York, he became friendly with Willem de Kooning and Arshile Gorky and was both influenced and inspired by the ferment of ideas that developed around the New York School during the late 1940's and early 1950's. Thall was also an active participant in the WPA New Deal Art Project of New York City between 1935 and 1939 and returned to the Art Students League as a teacher from 1947-9. He exhibited widely and with success including at the Whitney Museum Annuals of 1949 and 1950 and the Leicester Gallery, London, in 1961. Victor Thall's paintings are held in numerous private and public collections including the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Newark Museum and the artist is listed in all relevant reference works including Who Was Who in American Art. This piece is a wonderful Mid Century pertinent example of Nannot de Groot's works from the prime of his career with thick use of impasto oil paint, and gestural brushwork throughout. In 1957 it was a transitional year from painting figures in his New York studio to his new studio into the countryside. And in 1959 he and his wife came back to Provincetown Massachusetts and rented a small cabin that was in a field belonging to Mary Cecil Allen on the west end. It was a small space, and there was a tree that was outside the front door, he was inspired and painted this tree over and over, and soon it was the beginning of a whole new series. The brush landscape that was outside of the window of the cabin became a focal point of this series and every year it would change, picking up inspiration to depict the tree in a new way each year. This piece is signed and dated 59' by the artist upper right corner and it comes housed with the original Mid-Century wood frame with gold rim and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.
