Post-Impressionist Still-life Paintings
POSTIMPRESSIONIST STYLE
In the revolutionary wake of Impressionism, artists like Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin advanced the style further while firmly rejecting its limitations. Although the artists now associated with Postimpressionist art did not work as part of a group, they collectively employed an approach to expressing moments in time that was even more abstract than that of the Impressionists, and they shared an interest in moving away from naturalistic depictions to more subjective uses of vivid colors and light in their paintings.
The eighth and final Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris in 1886, and Postimpressionism — also spelled Post-Impressionism — is usually dated between then and 1905. The term “Postimpressionism” was coined by British curator and art critic Roger Fry in 1910 at the “Manet and the Postimpressionists” exhibition in London that connected their practices to the pioneering modernist art of Édouard Manet. Many Postimpressionist artists — most of whom lived in France — utilized thickly applied, vibrant pigments that emphasized the brushstrokes on the canvas.
The Postimpressionist movement’s iconic works of art include van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889) and Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884). Seurat’s approach reflected the experimental spirit of Postimpressionism, as he used Pointillist dots of color that were mixed by the eye of the viewer rather than the hand of the artist. Van Gogh, meanwhile, often based his paintings on observation, yet instilled them with an emotional and personal perspective in which colors and forms did not mirror reality. Alongside Mary Cassatt, Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Gauguin, the Dutch painter was a pupil of Camille Pissarro, the groundbreaking Impressionist artist who boldly organized the first independent painting exhibitions in late-19th-century Paris.
The boundary-expanding work of the Postimpressionist painters, which focused on real-life subject matter and featured a prioritization of geometric forms, would inspire the Nabis, German Expressionism, Cubism and other modern art movements to continue to explore abstraction and challenge expectations for art.

This early Danish Post-Impressionist artist first studied with Marie Sandholt and Astrid Holm at the Copenhagen Art Academy and, subsequently, at the School of Graphics (1929-31). Christensen continued his studies while traveling widely in Europe, including to Germany and Austria (1913-14), Paris (1917-23) and to Budapest and Vienna (1934). In 1935, he was awarded the Michaelsen Scholarship which enabled him to remain in Paris during the late 1930's. During intense period of development and creativity, he moved away from the bold colors and defined forms of his earlier Fauve and Cubist periods and began to explore the creation of predominantly single-color works, often in blues or greens accented with subtle shades of white. After the Second World War, he returned frequently to paint in Paris.
Kay Christensen, like his friend, Rainer Maria Rilke, followed a solitary artistic path in which his imagery was characterized by a personal aesthetic of sensuality combined with a spirited boldness and expressive force. He exhibited internationally with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. An early twentieth-century, oil still-life of pink dog-roses shown loosely arranged in a cobalt blue glass vase, set beside two Breton tin-glazed earthenware plates, resting on an azure-turquoise tablecloth and contrasted against a coral-ochre background. An elegant, early work by this foundational Danish Modernist.
Born in Denmark, Jais Nielsen initially studied at Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler under Kristian Zahrtmann and exhibited for the first time at the 1907 Autumn Salon at the Charlottenborg Palace. Nielsen participated in the early and groundbreaking, “Group of Thirteen" Modernist show, where his focus on dynamic figural painting and his bold use of color set him dramatically apart from his contemporaries. From 1907-11, Nielsen's use of 'primitive' Fauve colors would continue to reinforce his break with traditional Danish painting. During this period, he made study excursions to important art centres, including, in 1909, to Berlin. In 1911, he moved to Paris where he settled in the Latin Quarter near the Musée Cluny. His first formal Paris exhibition was at the Salon d’Automne of 1912. During this first Paris period, Nielsen attended meetings of the Section d’Or at the studio of Jacques Villon and, as a result, began to incorporate subtle, yet distinct, Cubist elements into his work.
With the outbreak of World War One, Nielsen returned to Copenhagen, taking with him both his increasing compositional sophistication and a thorough understanding of the principles of Modernism. During this period, ports, dance and circus life became subjects of interest and he painted many canvases in the style of Analytic Cubism, of which he became the earliest and, arguably, the finest Danish exponent. From 1915 onwards, Nielsen also created Cubist sculptures and, from 1922-28, was employed as a sculptor by the Royal Copenhagen porcelain factory. Viggo Rorup was still a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when he made his 1928 debut at the Charlottenborg Palace. Following his graduation in 1930, he moved to Odsherred, where he continued his studies under Karl Bovin. Together, they founded the avante-garde group of artists named The Corner, which first introduced the principles of European Modernism to Danish painting. Rorup traveled widely, including to Italy, Austria, Spain, and, most importantly, to France, where his studies of the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists had a great stylistic impact on his later work. As Rorup continued to paint in the south of France, his palette grew brighter and the earlier, more defined, contours of his forms became subsumed into scintillating nuances of light. We are pleased to offer this elegant and dazzling still-life from the artist's late period.

Rachko also has created a series of photographs entitled "Gods and Monsters".[11] In these chromogenic prints, she is "painting with a camera," creating variations that free the camera from being a mechanical recording device of what lies before it. She prints all of these images by hand.
The earlier "Domestic Threats" pastel-on-sandpaper paintings used her West Village apartment or her 1932 Sears house in Virginia as a backdrop. The "Black Paintings" series grew directly from "Domestic Threats". In the "Black Paintings," the figures (actors) take center stage. All background details, furniture, rugs, etc. have been eliminated and replaced by intense dark black pastel. Each painting takes months to complete as she slowly builds up as many as 30 layers of soft pastel.
Her long-standing fascination with traditional masks progressed in the spring of 2017 when she visited the National Museum of Ethnography and Folklore in La Paz, Bolivia where one exhibition included more than fifty festival masks. The resulting series is entitled “Bolivianos”.[12]

After initially studying in Paris, Harold Frank attended the New York Art Students League, the National Academy of Design, Pratt Institute, Chouinard Art Institute and UCLA where he was a colleague of Richard Diebenkorn, who had a lasting influence on his work. Other artists who deeply affected his creative philosophy included Matisse, Rouault, Picasso and De Kooning.
His one-man and group exhibition record is extensive and he was shown internationally in London, Paris, Amsterdam and Aubonne, Switzerland, as well as throughout the United States from the 1960's through the 80's. Though he did not seek recognition as his reason to create, major awards also came his way (among them the Adolph and Clara Obrig Award and the Sudam Silver Medal from the National Academy of Design; the National Watercolor Society's Grumbacher Award; the John Marin Memorial Award in the Watercolor U.S.A. Show and a First Prize from the Laguna Beach Museum of Art.
His subject matter included pure abstracts, landscapes, still lifes and the male and female head and figure. As many artists have done before and after him, he explored variations of each subject, experimenting with changes in medium, technique, light and color. His remarkable paintings of the female head and form quickly developed into a vehicle for his abstract interpretations. Though his brushwork is quick and sure, he often labored over several pieces at the same time.
This piece is accompanied with a first edition copy of 'Harold Frank: Abstract Expressionist 1921-1995' by Sandie Stern and published by Millenium Twelve Two (2001).

Artist, teacher and costume designer, Sanzo Wada worked during a turbulent time in avant-garde Japanese art and cinema. A multi-talented artist who gained early fame as a Western-style oil painter, his career spanned the late Meiji-era through the mid-twentieth century. In addition to numerous prizes and medals for his painting, he received the 1955 Academy Award for costume design for his work in the movie Gates of Hell. He also received awards for his pioneering work on color theory, which he researched and published in the 1920s and is still in use today.
Sanzo Wada graduated from the Western-style painting division of Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Studied in Europe 1907-1915; traveled to India and Burma. He was appointed a member of the Imperial Arts Academy in 1927 and taught at Tokyo School of Fine Arts from 1927.
