PHOTOREALISM

A direct challenge to Abstract Expressionism’s subjectivity and gestural vigor, Photorealism was informed by the Pop predilection for representational imagery, popular iconography and tools, like projectors and airbrushes, borrowed from the worlds of commercial art and design.

Whether gritty or gleaming, the subject matter favored by Photorealists is instantly, if vaguely, familiar. It’s the stuff of yellowing snapshots and fugitive memories. The bland and the garish alike flicker between crystal-clear reality and dreamy illusion, inviting the viewer to contemplate a single moment rather than igniting a story.

The virtues of the “photo” in Photorealist art — infused as they are with dazzling qualities that are easily blurred in reproduction — are as elusive as they are allusive. “Much Photorealist painting has the vacuity of proportion and intent of an idiot-savant, long on look and short on personal timbre,” John Arthur wrote (rather admiringly) in the catalogue essay for Realism/Photorealism, a 1980 exhibition at the Philbrook Museum of Art, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At its best, Photorealism is a perpetually paused tug-of-war between the sacred and the profane, the general and the specific, the record and the object.

Robert Bechtle invented Photorealism, in 1963,” says veteran art dealer Louis Meisel. “He took a picture of himself in the mirror with the car outside and then painted it. That was the first one.”

The meaning of the term, which began for Meisel as “a superficial way of defining and promoting a group of painters,” evolved with time, and the core group of Photorealists slowly expanded to include younger artists who traded Rolleiflexes for 60-megapixel cameras, using advanced digital technology to create paintings that transcend the detail of conventional photographs.

On 1stDibs, the collection of Photorealist art includes work by Richard Estes, Ralph Goings, Chuck Close, Audrey Flack, Charles Bell and others.

Stephanie Serpick, A New Fall 1, 2017, Oil On Panel, 16 x 20 inches, Realism
Located in Darien, CT
Intimate paintings represented by unmade beds and tossed sheets, absent of any human evidence, on intentionally blank, somewhat rough backgrounds. The empty bed in these paintings represents a place for grief, isolation or healing. As such, the work speaks to our shared feeling of grief, with the understanding that while we all suffer in our individual ways, suffering is universal. Source material for this work are photographs the artist has both taken and found, and the intimate size of the paintings references the intimate nature of the subject matter. The backgrounds of the paintings are repeatedly painted and sanded, to create a frame and backdrop for the bedding that is flat, yet rough with work and time. The bedding itself is seen from different perspectives, but still indicates a scene of desolation and despair. While the series began in the fall of 2016, recent events—including the pandemic—have provided a new dimension to the work and have compelled Serpick to consider the themes in light of these events. Our forced isolation and the challenges it has brought to our physical and mental health provides an additional shared experience from which to consider grief and eventual healing. Biography Stephanie Serpick is a painter whose work explores themes of isolation, grief, and healing. Her work has been shown in various exhibitions in the U.S. and internationally, and she is a fellow at several residencies, most notably at the Florence Trust Studios in London, MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts, and the Vermont Studio Center, where she was awarded a full fellowship and stipend to attend. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at Sweet Lorraine Gallery in Brooklyn, the College of Southern Nevada, and a two-person exhibition at The Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute at the Museum of Art at Pratt in Utica NY...

New York - Photorealistic Sign Painting with Oil and Enamel on Canvas
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Ross Tamlin's unique photorealistic compositions merge traditional painting methods with modern industrial techniques to create captivating works of art. Using layers of oil and enamel paint, Tamlin creates an illusion of corrugation that adds depth and texture to his pieces. His use of industrial imagery and found objects is a nod to contemporary art, while his bold color palette and incorporation of text is a nod to the Pop Art movement. Tamlin is a full-time artist living in Kyogle, New South Wales, Australia. He began a Fine Arts Certificate course at Meadowbank TAFE, and then in Brisbane, he completed a graphic arts course before returning to Sydney. His signature corrugated iron paintings combine traditional art genres including still-life and landscape along with graphic art. Influenced by the De Stijl movement, these paintings represent a synthesis of art and function. Tamlin created a one-of-a-kind, vibrant, and colorful painting that measures 42 inches high by 40 inches wide. The sides of the canvas are painted in a continuation of the front, and the artwork is signed and dated by the artist on the front. It does not require framing, and a certificate of authenticity issued by the gallery is included. Free local delivery is available in the Los Angeles area, and affordable shipping is also available throughout the U.S. and worldwide Tamlin's innovative compositions are a stunning exploration of industrial materials, as he reimagines their purpose and function to create a new relationship between object and viewer. Through the use of bright colors and primary hues, overlaid with text and glazing, Tamlin creates a landscape that is uniquely his own. His work challenges the traditional notion of landscape painting, as he incorporates familiar places' names and text into his pieces, offering a contemporary take on this classic genre. “My idea was to transmute traditional Australian corrugated iron into works of modern art. The corrugation in the painting is a visual illusion created by layers of paint. Most people can connect with these panels because corrugated iron is a familiar sight both in suburbia and the bush. However, the sense of seeing the traditional is contradicted by the contemporary signage.” Tamlin's works are represented by Artspace Warehouse Los Angeles and are held in private collections worldwide, including Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore, the USA, Switzerland, and France. Corporate collections include ING Bank, Babcock & Brown, Barclays Bank, Saville Hotel Group, Savills Property Group, Minter Ellison, Hai Win Shipping, Allkotes Pty Ltd, Blue Scope Steel Pty Ltd, Sieper & Co., A. West Hollywood - Photorealistic Oil and Enamel Vibrant Painting on Canvas
Tamlin created this one-of-a-kind, vibrant, and colorful painting measuring 44 inches high by 42.5 inches wide and 1.25 inches deep with oil and enamel paint on canvas. The sides of the canvas are painted in a continuation of the front eliminating the need for framing. In addition to being signed by the artist on the front, the artwork also comes with a certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery. The certificate guarantees the authenticity and provenance of the artwork. Free delivery is available for those in the local Los Angeles area, and affordable worldwide shipping is available for US and international art collectors. In this artwork, Tamlin reworks the traditional idea of landscape painting by incorporating text and familiar places' names, such as ski resorts, painted in large letters over the colorful photorealistic painted corrugated metal. This photorealistic painting by Ross Tamlin is so expertly executed that it perfectly mimics the texture and appearance of corrugated metal, even when seen in person. However, upon much closer inspection from the side at a nearly 90-degree angle, the levelness of the canvas is revealed, allowing you to appreciate the skillful brushwork of oil and enamel paint that gives the amazing illusion of depth and texture. With meticulous attention to detail, Tamlin imparts extraordinary depth to the painting, creating a finish that emulates the shine of polished metal and further enhances the piece's realistic appearance. This original artwork stands as a testament to Tamlin's remarkable talent and precision, demonstrated through the inclusion of even the smallest details, such as the masterfully painted rusty rivet holes. Tamlin's works are represented by Artspace Warehouse Los Angeles and are held in private collections worldwide, including Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore, the USA, Switzerland, and France. Corporate collections include ING Bank, Babcock & Brown, Barclays Bank, Saville Hotel Group, Savills Property Group, Minter Ellison, Hai Win Shipping, Allkotes Pty Ltd, Blue Scope Steel Pty Ltd, Sieper & Co., A. Second Light 32″ x 57″
Located in Boca Raton, FL
One cannot appreciate this painting on a computer screen; in real life, it is absolutely amazing.  Because you cannot appreciate it on a computer screen, our gallery has a unique policy.  When purchasing from us, the buyer has sixty days to determine if they want to keep the artwork.  If not, the buyer returns the piece to us for full refund, and we pay the shipping both ways! A collector should consider several factors when deciding from whom to purchase artwork online. Check the location of the seller. When one buys from a foreign seller, one also has to consider the problems of getting the piece through Customs. There are often delays and considerable fees to pay in order to import the item.  When purchasing from us, we ship the same day and you receive it via FedEx the next day, no problems or hassles. When one purchases from an auction house, one pays a buyer’s premium of anywhere from 23% to 28% over the “hammer price”.  So when one “wins” an auction for $20,000, the actual price paid is more like $25,000. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the price agreed to is the price paid by the buyer, no hidden fees. Secondly, when one purchases from an auction house, the buyer pays the packing and shipping fee, which are usually exorbitant.  By contrast, when purchasing from us, the price includes packing and shipping. Thirdly, when one purchases from an auction house, the sale is final.  If one receives the piece and is not 100% satisfied with it, there is nothing the buyer can do about it.  They are stuck with it.  By contrast, when purchasing from us, the buyer has sixty days to determine if they want to keep it.  If not, the buyer returns to piece to us for full refund, and we pay the shipping both ways. Curious Cloud
Located in Atlanta, GA
Drawn to art since childhood, Jose Antonio Fuentes began his artistic career at a young age in the 1960s. At nine years old the Spanish born artist sold drawings to his neighbors and exchanged paintings for gifts with his classmates. An academically gifted student, he ranked higher than his peers and joined older classmates to enter the baccalaureate program at the age of ten. There he completed additional advanced arts courses. In 1970 Fuentes featured in his first group exhibitions in local and provincial cultural centers. Unfortunately, his academic and artistic career was truncated when his father abruptly left his family, leaving the family in financial difficulty. At the age of fourteen, Fuentes was forced to leave school to begin working and support his family. After years of both working and saving money, in 1978 Fuentes garnered enough savings to enroll in school at La Marina in Spain, where he was first in his class. Whenever circumstances allowed he continued to draw and paint, participate in art contests, and visit all nearby museums and artists' workshops. Fuentes strongly believes that observing other cultures, landscapes, and people is vital to a painter’s understanding of how to portray the world. In the early 1980s Fuentes married and began a family. The domestic and financial obligations to his young family prevented the free time necessary to continue painting. Fuentes notes that the postponement of his artistic career to raise his family is never a source of regret as there is nothing more fulfilling than to see his children grow. As his children grew older in age and required less of Fuentes’s time in the 1990s, he was able to travel more extensively and resumed his cultural tours. He visited cities in Spain such as Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Bilbao, and spend countless hours in acclaimed museums and cultural centers including El Prado, Thyssen, Conde Duque, the Sorolla Museum, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Picasso museum, the Joan Miro Foundation, and the Tapies Foundation in Barcelona. He also extensively attended exhibition openings, artist talks, conferences and workshops where he learns from masters of realism including Toral, Naranjo, Antonio Lopez, Munoz Vera, Macarron, Leon Olmo, Claudio Bravo, Lapayese, Perez Villalta...

Boatyard Lift (Photo-realist Oil Painting of a Red & Yellow Crane on Blue)
Located in Hudson, NY
Large, photo-realist painting on canvas featuring a crimson red and yellow industrial boatyard lift against a bright sky blue background 47 x 31 x 2 inches oil on canvas, thin wood stripping signed verso, "Joseph E. Richards" Hangs with wire installed on the back This precisely detailed photo-realist painting was made by Joseph E. Richards in 2001. The artist painted this piece when he was 71 years old during a long career of painting trains, cargo ships, and industrial machinery. Richards served in the US Navy during WWII and went on to study at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia before showing with Ivan Karp of O.K. Harris Gallery in NYC. The artist moved upstate to Hillsdale, NY for the later years of his life. This painting captures one of Richards' most beloved subjects, industrial cranes. With a photo-realist approach to the subject, Richards was able to capture detailed changes in light and shadow, shape and form. The red and yellow crane, painted with extreme detail and focus, vividly contrasts against a bright blue sky. Areas of brown rust, attesting to the machine's power and longevity, are captured with immaculate precision. Since the painting has a very smooth surface, one could easily mistake this painting with a photograph. It is not until you examine the painting up close, do you realize the artist's calculated brushwork. The painting is framed with natural wood stripping. The work is lightweight and easy to hang with pre-installed wire. The artist's signature is located on the back of the canvas. About the artist: Joseph Richards’ precisely painted canvases of giant cranes, cargo booms, propellers and train engines are fueled with a fascination like that of a six-year old boy. Working directly from photographs, Richards unites light and color together as one element, evident in the reflective surfaces of steel. The otherwise mundane signs of corrosive wear are magnified; rust stains glow on the canvas and yellow painted pulleys radiate like beacons against a bright, blue sky. Richards finds beauty in their dramatic color, resilient texture, definitive form and functionality. Richards paints sections of these objects in grand scale, with canvases up to 6 feet long and eye-popping color, calling attention to their massive proportions and exceptional strength. Richards had solo exhibits in New York City, Scottsdale AZ, and Washington DC, and his work is found in private and corporate collections here and abroad, e.g., the Tucson Museum of Fine Arts, Mobil Oil, Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia, and E. Jean Belloni in Geneva, Switzerland. Resume: Born in 1921 in Des Moines, Iowa, Joseph Richards left for Chicago after high school to pursue a career in art. After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942 – 1945, he went on to study at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. He eventually settled with his wife, Betty, in New York City. In 1969, longtime dealer Ivan Karp opened The OK Harris Gallery on West Broadway in Manhattan’s SoHo. Karp was at the forefront of the Photorealism movement, showing artists such as Duane Hanson and Manny Farber...
