This is an original 19th century hand-colored McKenney and Hall lithograph of a Native American entitled "Kish-Ke-Kosh, Fox Brave", lithographed by J. T. Bowen after a painting by Charles Bird King and published by Rice and Hart & Co. in Philadelphia in 1848. Kish-Ke-Kosh, means 'The Man with One Leg' or 'He with a Cut Hoof'. He had a reputation for being a fierce warrior. He was a representative of the delegation of Sioux and Fox and Sauk chiefs who attended the gathering with the War Department in 1837. The Fox tribe lived in the Great Lakes region of the United States and merged with the Sauk tribe. This original McKenney and Hall hand-colored lithograph is printed on a sheet measuring 10.38" high and 7" wide. There are tiny spots in the lower left margin, another in the right lower margin and mild smudging in the left margin, but the print is otherwise in very good condition. The original descriptive text pages, 119-120, from McKenney and Hall's 19th century publication are included. Col. Thomas J. McKenney was Superintendant of The Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1816 until 1830. This is an original 19th century hand-colored folio-sized lithograph entitled "Archibuteo Lagopus" (Rough-Legged Buzzard) by John Gould and Edward Lear, from Gould's "Birds of Great Britain", published in London between 1862 and 1873. The print depicts an adult Rough-Legged Buzzard perched on a branch of a tree looking to the left. This beautiful framed Gould hand-colored lithograph is presented in a gold-colored wood frame and cream-colored French mat, embellished by a gold-colored fillet. John Gould (1804-1881]) was an English ornithologist and artist. He, like his American contemporary John James Audubon, published a number of books on birds in the mid 19th century, illustrated by hand-colored lithographs. His wife and fellow artist, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear and Henry Constantine Richter produced lithographs for his various publications. He has been considered the father of bird study in Australia and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. Charles Darwin referenced Gould’s work in his book, "On the Origin of Species" and Gould named a bird after Darwin; "Darwin's finches". Gould began his career in London as a taxidermist, but in 1827 became the first curator and conservator at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. In this position naturalists brought him collections of birds from all over the world. He began creating drawings and eventually hand-colored lithographs with his wife and Edward Lear, which were the basis for his first publications. Darwin brought him specimens from the Galapagos Islands, including 12 species of finches which had never been described. In 1838, Gould and his wife travelled to Australia and their work led to the seven volume publication of “The Birds of Australia”. Gould had a fascination for hummingbirds and collected specimens of 320 varieties before ever seeing a live hummingbird on a trip to the United States in 1857. He eventually published “A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds". Other large publications include: "The Birds of Europe"," A Monograph of the Ramphastidae, or Family of Toucans”, “A Synopsis of the Birds of Australia, and the Adjacent Islands”, “A Monograph of the Odontophorinae, or Partridges of America”, “The Birds of Asia”, “The Birds of Great Britain” and "The Birds of New Guinea and the Adjacent Papuan Islands, including many new species recently discovered in Australia". John Gould (1804-1881) was a British ornithologist and illustrator who is best known for his monumental work, "The Birds of Europe," published between 1832 and 1837. Gould was born in Lyme Regis, Dorset, England, and began working as a taxidermist and natural history dealer in London in the 1820s. In 1827, Gould was appointed the first curator and preserver of birds at the Zoological Society of London, where he began to build his collection of specimens and began to study the birds of the world. He published his first monograph, "A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains," in 1831, which included 80 plates of Himalayan birds. Gould continued to publish numerous volumes on the birds of the world throughout his life, including "The Birds of Australia" (1840-1848) and "The Birds of Great Britain" (1862-1873). His works were highly regarded for their accuracy and detail, and he was one of the most prominent ornithologists of his time. In addition to his work as an ornithologist, Gould was also a successful businessman, and he used his profits to fund expeditions and to support the scientific community. Based on a composition painted in the Florida Keys on April 26, 1832, Audubon's forty-seventh birthday. The double-crested cormorant (Nannopterum auritum) is a member of the cormorant family of water birds. It is found near rivers and lakes and in coastal areas and is widely distributed across North America, from the Aleutian Islands in Alaska down to Florida and Mexico. Measuring 70–90 cm (28–35 in) in length, it is entirely black except for a bare patch of orange-yellow facial skin and some extra plumage that it exhibits in the breeding season when it grows a double crest in which black feathers are mingled with white. Five subspecies are recognized. It mainly eats fish and hunts by swimming and diving. Its feathers, like all cormorants, are not waterproof, and it must dry them out after spending time in the water. Once threatened by the use of DDT, the numbers of this bird have increased markedly in recent years. To make 'The Birds of America' more affordable and widely available, in 1839 John James Audubon began the first octavo edition, a smaller version of the folio which was printed and hand-colored by J. T. Bowen in Philadelphia. Employing a new invention, the camera lucida, the images were reduced in size, rendered in intermediate drawings by John James Audubon and his son John Woodhouse, and then drawn onto lithographic stones. These miniatures exhibit a remarkable amount of attention to quality and detail, as well as a meticulous fidelity to the larger works. Available for sale; this original painting is by Cornelius Pearson with a significant contribution by Thomas Francis Wainewright, and is dated 1872. The watercolor is presented and supplied in a sympathetic pinned corner frame dating from the 1950s or 1960s (which is shown in these photographs), mounted and behind glass. This antique painting is in very good condition whilst the frame is in a good condition, commensurate with age. It is ready to hang and display. The watercolor is signed by both artists and dated 1872 lower left. The mount is titled and attributed by hand. Cornelius Pearson was an accomplished landscape artist. He was born in Boston, Lincolnshire but moved at an early age to London where he became apprenticed to a copper-plate engraver. A beautifully painted en plein air view of "Il ponte dell´Ariccia", Ariccia, and The Alban Hills by Joachim Ludwig Heinrich Daniel Bünsow (Kiel 1821-1910 Ebenda). Oil on paper laid on cardboard. Bünsow received his training at the Royal Danish Art Academy from 1839 to 1848 with Johann Ludwig Lund and Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. He then traveled to Dresden, where he joined Johan Christian Dahl's circle. A scholarship from the Copenhagen Academy enabled Bünsow to stay in Rome from 1853 to 1858 which is in the period when this painting was made. While Bünsow's early painterly work was based on the fine-toned and naturalistic style of his teachers, the landscapes he created in Italy were influenced by Louis Gurlitt and were more atmospheric and idealizing. Fredrik Bünsow, the son of his brother, Joachim Johann Friedrich Bünsow, also a painter, became a wellknown industrialist and businessman in Stockholm, Sweden. Included in this post is a photo of the family palace that was built 1886-1888 and an interior photo with some other Bünsow paintings hanging on the walls. This painting has been in the Bunsow family until present day. At the beginning of the 19th century, following some economic development, the local government started pushing the Papal State to make the Appian way safer, faster and more accessible. The only possible solution was to build bridges that would cross the Ariccian valley, the two valleys to reach Galloro and finally the ‘Vallone’ to overcome the slope and leave Colle Pardo behind on the way to Genzano. Therefore, in order to adapt to the difference in altitude, in 1843 Pope Gregorius XVI had a six-arched bridge constructed. In the meanwhile, a new route of the Appian Way was being planned – equipped with two more bridges, the Saint Roch Bridge and another minor one, in addition to the large bridge to be built over the Ariccian ‘Vallone’. Construction did not stop with the Pope's death in 1846, and was completed by his successor Pius IX, who entrusted the Monumental Bridge project to an architect from Marche, Ireneo Aleandri, while the execution of the work was entrusted to Giuseppe Bertolini. Work was completed in 1854 and is one of the most important engineering achievements of the 19th century: set on three orders of arches in elegant neoclassical style inspired by Roman art, the bridge is 59 metres high and 312 metres long.
