Vintage C Print "Of Time and Change" Boulders on a Sea Shore
By Sonja Bullaty
Located in Surfside, FL
1981, Chromogenic Print. It is supposed to be signed lower right recto but has not been examined out of frame. Provenance: Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, New York; ARCO Chemical Company, Newtown Square, PA. Sonja Bullaty (October 17, 1923 - October 5, 2000) was a Jewish American photographer. Bullaty is known for her "lyrical composition" and strong use of color during her fifty-year collaboration with her husband, Angelo Lomeo. Bullaty and Lomeo's photographs appeared in LIFE, Time and Audubon magazines and journal. They have both exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography, the George Eastman House, UMPRUM Museum in Prague, in the Nikon House galleries and other venues. Bullaty was born in Prague to a Jewish banking family. Her family gave her a camera when she turned fourteen. Since Bullaty had been forced to leave school at the time, the camera was a "consolation gift." When Bullaty was eighteen, she was deported by the Nazis to Poland, where she was kept in the Lodz ghetto, and then later taken to Auschwitz and Gross-Rosen concentration camps. During a death march near Dresden, she and a friend successfully hid in a barn and were able to escape and return to Prague. When she got back to her home city, she discovered that no one else in her family had survived the Holocaust. Bullaty, "her head shaved," saw and answered an advertisement to be the helper to Czech photographer, Josef Sudek. As his assistant, she mixed chemicals for the darkroom, organized his negatives and learned from his sense of composition.[1] Sudek called her his "apprentice-martyr." Sudek's work often focused on the Czech landscape and windows, such as in the series The Windows of My Studio (1940-1954). Bullaty also photographed windows, but unlike Sudek, who photographed his own windows looking out, Bullaty photographed windows looking into buildings. Bullaty published a book, Sudek (1978), about her mentor, and it was the first publication of his work in the West. Bullaty found work with a photographer on her third day in New York. Also in 1947, she met Angelo Lomeo. They were brought together when she was inquiring about a darkroom in a building he managed. Lomeo was intrigued by Bullaty's accent and went to see her. They started photographing together a year later, traveling and sharing resources; during their time together, they became close. Bullaty and Lomeo were married in 1951. Later, when she was married, she and her husband would visit Sudek and bring him photography supplies. They visited him in Czechoslovakia "almost yearly." In 1971, she helped mount an exhibition of Sudek's work in New York. As photographers, Bullaty and Lomeo started using studio cameras...

Located in Surfside, FL
BIRNEY IMES, Mississippi, b. 1951 "Riverside Lounge, Shaw, 1986" Dimensions: Chromogenic print, 14" x 16.5" sight. Framed 21" x 25". Birney Imes (born 1951) is an American photographer. He is best known for his photographs of the American South, especially his home state of Mississippi. His work is exhibited in museums across the United States. Birney Imes III was born in 1951 in Columbus, Mississippi. His father, Vinton Birney Imes, Jr., owned the town newspaper, The Commercial Dispatch. His mother is Nancy McClanahan Imes. He attended desegregated public schools in Columbus and graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1973. Growing up white in the South during the Civil Rights Movement helped shape his views on history and that is where his photography career originated from. Imes began photographing after graduation from college and is largely self-taught. In the mid-70s, he worked as a photographer for his family's newspaper in his hometown of Columbus. Later, he opened his own studio above the Princess Theater in Columbus. Along with his personal work, Imes shot commercial work for local clients and took assignments for magazines like Rolling Stone, The Village Voice and Texas Monthly. His work has been printed in both black and white silver gelatin and color photos. Birney Imes’ photography takes viewers inside pool halls, jazz spots, juke joints and dilapidated restaurants scattered across that rural Mississippi landscape. Drawing inspiration from the photographs of other Southern artists...

Large original, vintage, Ektacolor print collage Depicts art deco architectural facade of Publix building at Dade Boulevard and Alton Road in Miami Beach, Florida. Multiple prints formed into a collage mounted on a stretched canvas. Printed November 1989. Mounted December 1989. dated lower left. Includes protective canvas slip covering. Size: 81"H x 72"W (205.74 cm x 182.88 cm). Provenance: Bass Museum, Miami Beach, Florida This was exhibited at the Norton Museum in Palm Beach and Bears their exhibition label verso. Rafael Salazar (Cuban- American photographer) was born in Cuba in 1945 and has been a South Florida resident since 1965. He has photographed the development of the City of Miami as well as Miami’s budding art scene over the years. He is primarily known for his panoramic photographs and photo assemblage montages which have both a documentary quality to them but are full of enchantment and depth. Of great importance to him is the preservation on film of art works, especially those of a transitory nature, this has led him to photograph two of Christo and Jeanne-Claude projects; Miami’s Surrounded Islands and the Pont Neuf in Paris. He has also documented the works of Fernando García, Ed Ruscha, and Philip Johnson. His work draws inspiration from his love of the cosmos, spirituality, architecture, Eastern philosophy, and nature. He has been exhibiting his fine art both nationally and internationally for many years. Salazar’s images have earned him a reputation as an innovative and sensitive artist. He has close ties with the Miami-Dade Public Library System and photographed much of the development of Main Library as well as the early exhibitions and events held there. He photographed the library’s Artmobile, painted by New York Realist artist Lowell Nesbitt, an art gallery on wheels decorated with zebra patterns and native flowers that was in service from 1976 until 1992. He also documented the Grand Opening Celebration of the Metro-Dade Cultural Center held in 1986. Since its 1970 start, the Permanent Art Collection has been recognized nationally as a fearless reflection of Miami’s diversity, and an invaluable chronicle of its artistic and social history. Their collection includes Elizabeth Catlett, Purvis Young and Emilio Sanchez. "Fact and Fiction: The State of Florida Photography...

Located in Surfside, FL
SLAVES WE WERE, 1982, color photograph, signed and dated and titled in ink, numbered 3/50, sheet 12 x 16”. Hand signed, titled and has the edition number on the recto. Gerard Allon, photographer, born 1949, Casablanca, Morocco. Immigrated to Israel in 1974. In 1985 Allon left Israel and established himself in Canada. He became interested in holography and developed a patent for the "holoposter" .Gérard Allon (Moroccan, Israeli) was born in 1949 in Morocco, grew up in Algiers, then in France. He learned French literature at the Lille University and worked as director assistant for the cinema and the French television. At age 24 he went to Israel and made a movie on the first Jewish settlement on the Golan Heights. From 1975 he has developed an Artist photographer career. The transformation of the camera arts in Israel began in the summer of 1975 with a juried exhibition in Tel Aviv entitled Through the Lens of Immigrant Photographers. Held under the auspices of the Ministry Of Education and Culture, the exhibition included six artists selected by a jury: one of them, the then-unknown Gérard Allon. To include him was an act of almost prophetic clairvoyance, since both as an artist and a photographer, Allon was destined to play a most important role in the renewal of the art in Israel, above all in the field of commercial and fashion photography. Together with a handful of other young photographers active at the time (among them the immigrants Yosaif Cohain and Neil Folberg, and Israelis educated abroad, such as Hanan Laskin, Avi Ganor, and Micha Kirshner), Allon was instrumental in bringing much-needed foreign influences into the insular bubble of local photography. He belongs to the younger generation of camera artists who have established new standards and have brought Israel Photography...

Flack (born May 30, 1931 in New York City, New York) is an American artist. Her work pioneered the art genre of photorealism; her work encompasses painting, sculpture, and photography. From Audrey Flack: 12 Photographs 1973 to 1983. A set of this portfolio is in the collections of the Harvard Art Museums. The Kodakchrome photos were photgraphed with a NIkon camera, the Ektachrome photographs were taken with a Hasselblad camera. Each negative was printed on a 20 X24 inche fiber based paper, dry mounted wth seal MT5 dry mounting tissue to 4 ply 100% cotton fiber board by Arnon Ben-David and Ari Rivera Gonzales under the supervision of Carol Brower. Flack has numerous academic degrees, including both a graduate and an honorary doctorate degree from Cooper Union in New York City. Additionally she has a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Yale University and attended New York University Institute of Fine Arts where she studied art history. In May 2015, Flack received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Clark University, where she also gave a commencement address. Flack's work is displayed in several major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Flack's photorealist paintings were the first such paintings to be purchased for the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection, and her legacy as a photorealist lives on to influence many American and International artists today. J. B. Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky, organized a retrospective of her work, and Flack’s pioneering efforts into the world of photorealism popularized the genre to the extent that it remains today. Flack attended New York's High School of Music & Art. She studied fine arts in New York from 1948 to 1953, studying under Josef Albers among others. She earned a graduate degree and received an honorary doctorate from Cooper Union in New York City, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Yale University. She studied art history at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. 1953 New York University Institute of Fine Arts, New York City 1952 BFA, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut 1948-51 Cooper Union, New York City Career Flack's early work in the 1950s was abstract expressionist; one such painting paid tribute to Franz Kline. Most influential amongst her early supporters was the Bauhaus artist Josef Albers. It was he who persuaded Flack to take up a scholarship at Yale with the mission of shaking up the institution's stuffy academic reputation. The ironic kitsch themes in her early work influenced Jeff Koons. But gradually, Flack became a New Realist and then evolved into photorealism during the 1960s. Her move to the photorealist style was in part because she wanted her art to communicate to the viewer. She was the first photorealist painter to be added to the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in 1966. Between 1976 and 1978 she painted her Vanitas series, including the piece Marilyn. The critic Graham Thompson wrote, "One demonstration of the way photography became assimilated into the art world is the success of photorealist painting in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It is also called super-realism, radical realism, or hyper-realism and painters like Richard Estes, Chuck Close, and Audrey Flack as well, often worked from photographic stills to create paintings that appeared to be photographs." In the early 1980s Flack's artistic medium shifted from painting to sculpture. She describes this shift as a desire for "something solid, real, tangible. Something to hold and to hold on to." Flack discusses the fact that she is self-taught in sculpture. She incorporates religion and mythology into her sculpture rather than the historical or everyday subjects of her paintings. Her sculptures often demonstrate a connection to the female form, including a series of diverse, heroic women and goddess figures. These depictions of women differ from those of traditional femininity, but rather are athletic, older, and strong. As Flack describes them: "they are real yet idealized... the 'goddesses in everywoman.'" Flack has claimed to have found the photorealist movement too restricting, and now gains much of her inspiration from Baroque art. Flack is currently represented by the Louis K. Meisel Gallery and Hollis Taggart Galleries. Her work is held in the collections of museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Allen Memorial Art Museum, and the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, Australia. She was awarded the St. Gaudens Medal from Cooper Union, and the honorary Albert Dome professorship from Bridgeport University. She is an honorary professor at George Washington University, is currently a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania and has taught and lectured extensively both nationally, and internationally. Flack lives and works in New York City and Long Island. Audrey Flack is best known for her photo-realist paintings and was one of the first artists to use photographs as the basis for painting. The genre, taking its cues from Pop Art, incorporates depictions of the real and the regular, from advertisements to cars to cosmetics. Flack's work brings in everyday household items like tubes of lipstick, perfume bottles, Hispanic Madonnas, and fruit. These inanimate objects often disturb or crowd the pictorial space, which are often composed as table-top still lives. Flack often brings in actual accounts of history into her photorealist paintings, such as World War II' (Vanitas) and Kennedy Motorcade. Women were frequently the subject of her photo realist paintings. In her Neoclassical public sculpture of gilded bronze angels...
