The photographs and poem that evolved into this series of photographs and the accompanying book “Yesterday” were made during the summer of 2020. Although
much of the country was in the midst of the Covid 19 pandemic, on this remote island off the coast of Maine, we still felt free from much of the toll that Covid was taking.
Able to spend time outside, in nature, we had the illusion of safety, of normalcy almost, whilst at the same time being painfully aware of how the virus was increasingly
touching everyone's lives. By then we all knew of people who had died, or become ill and we were managing the stress of futures shifting and plans that had been derailed,
fearing what would come with the change of the seasons. That summer represented a pause in time, a moment where life could feel normal, when we were still holding on to a world of yesterdays.
Maine-based photographic artist and writer Sal Taylor Kydd uses various photographic media in a personal narrative that explores themes around memory and belonging; combining her poetry with alternative processes of photography and object-making.
Taylor Kydd’s fine art photographs have been exhibited throughout the country and internationally, including Barcelona, San Miguel De Allende, Portland, Boston and Los Angeles; and she has been featured in numerous publications, including Shots Magazine, Don’t Take Pictures Magazine, Lenscratch, Diffusion Annual and The Hand magazine.
She has self-published a number of books combining her poetry with her photographs. Her books are in private and museum collections throughout the country including The Getty Museum, Bowdoin College, The Peabody Essex Museum and the Maine Women Writer’s Collection at the University of New England. Taylor Kydd’s latest book “Yesterday”, produced by Datz Press, is a limited edition book of poems and photographs that explores our sense of loss around the pandemic of 2020.

Frank Schott grew up in Germany and attended the prestigious Academy of Arts in Cologne, studying under Professor Arno Jansen, who was an early influence.
Moving to California in 1998, Schott's work has evolved to include the epic landscapes and deserts of the American West as well as architectural, conceptual and more formal environments from both home and his travels.
Influenced by a number of photographic peers and precursors such as Candida Höfer, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Jeff Wall, Michael Wolf, Gregory Crewdson, William Eggleston and Joel Sternfeld, Schott's images successfully blend technical, conceptual and formal rigor with a decisive sense of composition and color.
Schott's images have an iconic sensibility and give us a bird's eye view onto humanity and its constructs. The specific is edged towards the abstract, often revealing the compelling and disjunctive moment where nature meets man.

Combining the documentary style of my previous climate project, The Witness Tree, with my earlier narrative fictional approach, I photograph paper cutouts (from appropriated online images) of climate-threatened birds. I place the cutouts within the birds’ current habitats so that they look real, but upon inspection, reveal themselves to be photos within photos—the gaze within the gaze upon nature—as actual birds recede into marginal zones of survival.
The images are meant to disrupt the casual gaze, disarming the expectations of nature photography, leaving viewers disturbed and curious.
Divergence of Birds (2017-current)
A large-scale, long-term, multimedia conceptual project about the threat of species extinction on birds in North America .
My current climate project, Divergence of Birds, takes inspiration from two texts: The Audubon Society’s “Birds and Climate Change Report” which projects that, by 2080, climate change will affect the range of habitat of over half of North American birds; and Phillip K. Dick’s 1968 novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” where electric versions of once-commonplace animals are so realistic that they fool even veterinarians. Divergence of Birds addresses the prospect that, one day, only simulacra of climate-impacted animals will be left.
Combining the documentary style of my previous climate project, The Witness Tree, with my earlier narrative fictional approach, I’m photographing paper cutouts (from appropriated online photos) of the nearly 400 climate-threatened birds. Peter Brown attended Stanford University (BA English, MFA Photography) and has taught in the art departments at Rice and at Stanford. He has exhibited and published his work widely.
His photographic awards include the Dorothea Lange – Paul Taylor Prize (with Kent Haruf) from the Duke Center for Documentary Studies; an Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for a photo-essay published in DoubleTake; an Imogen Cunningham Award for his portfolio Seasons of Light; a graduate fellowship from the Carnegie Foundation; an Artist’s Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts; an Artist’s Grant from the Cultural Arts Council of Houston and a publication grant from the Graham Foundation. His book On the Plains won the Fred Whitehead Award from the Texas Institute of Letters. He presently is photographing the Llano Estacado of Texas and New Mexico under a grant from the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech University and the central high plains in a collaboration with the novelist Kent Haruf. His book with Haruf, West of Last Chance, will be published by W.W. Norton in January 2008.
His photographs are in many public, private, university and corporate collections, including those of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Menil Collection in Houston, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angles County Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Stanford University Museum of Art, the Rice University Collection, The Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas Austin, the Sheldon Museum at the University of Nebraska, the Spencer Museum at the University of Kansas, the Snipe Museum at Notre Dame, and the University of Kentucky Museum of Art, among many others. His work has been exhibited in one man and group shows in museums and galleries in this country and abroad. The photography of Arie van ’t Riet is a merger of his scientific background, being an engineer and physicist, and his passion and love for flora and fauna. His focus is on the essence of nature. This process takes a sense of beauty, but also technical knowledge and insight. The animals (found dead) he uses, are placed in an optimal position together with plants and other crops. This setup, called a Biorama, is placed for a X-ray and by radiation fixated on film. For this work van ’t Riet received a special permit.
