This impressive, large hand signed, silkscreen on 100% Italian silk shawl was created by Frank Stella in collaboration with his longtime publisher Kenneth Tyler of the famed Tyler Graphics Studio. In red silk Italian made presentation box with an accompanying COA - hand signed by both Stella and Tyler. "The Whale Watch" is also signed and dated on the front of the art work by Frank Stella in indelible black marker. It was acquired directly from the publisher before Kenneth Tyler retired, and is brand new in the publishers' original red silk box and wrapping. While The Whale Watch is indeed wearable art, it is also a silkscreen, and many collectors choose to frame this hand signed 54 square inch print to display as a stunning and easily recognizable work of art by Frank Stella. The image is based on an iconic silkscreen Stella created for the Moby Dick Deckle Edges series of prints in the 1990s (also published by Tyler Graphics) based on Herman Melvilles epic novel "Moby Dick". There is been a tremendous amount of literature celebrating this body of work. Provenance: Acquired directly from the publisher FRANK STELLA BIOGRAPHY In the late 1950s, Frank Stella (1936–2024) revolutionized abstraction by merging the flat restraint of Jasper Johns with the formal, geometric shapes of abstract expressionism. With a reductive painting process that involved prosaic procedures and systemic variation, he discarded illusionistic space to emphasize the two-dimensional surface, paving a way for the Minimalist movement. For more than six decades, his career was marked by constant innovation, moving through series that eventually came to embrace narrative and a formal abundance he termed “maximalism.” Born in Malden, Massachusetts and based in New York, Stella studied history and studio art at Princeton University. In 1958, he moved to New York and initiated his Black Paintings (1958–60)—bands of matte enamel delineated by pinstripes of raw canvas, their composition determined by the scale of the canvas and paintbrush. The following year, when Stella was only twenty-three years old, these paintings appeared in the seminal exhibition Sixteen Americans at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Leo Castelli Gallery in New York mounted an exhibition of his Aluminum Paintings in 1960. Stella was included in such critical New York exhibitions as Geometric Abstraction (1962) at the Whitney Museum of American Art and The Shaped Canvas (1964–65) and Systemic Painting (1966), both at Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. With his Irregular Polygon (1965–67) and Protractor (1967–71) series, he expanded his experimentation with color and the shaped canvas. In 1970, Stella became the youngest artist ever to receive a full-scale retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. That decade, he began making series of increasingly elaborate relief constructions on canvas and aluminum, including Polish Village (1970–73) and Exotic Bird Paintings...

Viola Burley Leak, American (1944 - ) Viola Leak was born in Nashville, Tennessee, she received a B.A. in Art from Fisk University, a B.F.A. in Fashion Design from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, an M.A. from Hunter College, NY and an M.F.A. in Media from Howard University, Washington, DC. Leak was an art consultant for both the New York State Board of Education and the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Print Department, in addition to working for the Experimental Gallery of Art at the Smithsonian Institute. Her mixed media work often references religious motifs and those of her African-American experience and heritage. She is a multimedia artist, her works include printmaking, textile designing, soft sculpture, appliqué tapestries, doll making, and multi-media. Viola has studied with many renowned artists such as Aaron Douglas, Romare Bearden, Robert Blackburn, and Charles White. Her works can be found in the collections of World Federation of United Nations, New York State Office Building, Manufacturers of Hanover Trust Company, Atlanta Life Insurance Company and many more organizations. Viola's exhibition experience is extensive - more than 100 showings over a decade, national and international. Her quilts exude a miraculous and magical presence. They have traveled in two international shows and three national quilt projects in the past three years. A proud moment for her was being featured in the December 20, 2000 of the Smithsonian magazine; the article praised her mural "Afro Dance Scan" as one of the outstanding artworks in the "When the Spirit Moves: African American Dance in History and Art" exhibit. This fine artist has taught art at several prestigious universities, conducted art workshops for the Smithsonian Institution, worked as an Art Specialist for the District of Columbia Public Schools, and toy designer for Ideal Toy Company. Paul Levy (American, b. 1944) An established designer and illustrator, Paul M. Levy was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1944. He received his B.S. in Industrial Design from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1968, returning later to do independent study there. He also did independent study at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, in 1969 and received an M.F.A. in Sculpture and Printmaking from Ohio University, Athens.
