These two prints from Warhol's iconic "Flash Portfolio" were selected for inclusion in the blockbuster Andy Warhol retrospective at the Whitney Museum in 2019. (see photos). The plaque on the Whitney exhibition (also see included photo) describes the portfolio as follows:" These screenprints reflect Warhol's ongoing interest in the Kennedy assassination, an obsession that intensified following the release of the Warren Commission report and the publication of stills from a short home movie of the event, published by bystander Abraham Zapruder. For his illustrations, Warhol appropriated the recurring image of Kennedy from a 1960 campaign poster, and sourced the remaining photographs, including pictures of Lee Harvey Oswald and an ad for the type of rifle used, from Life's [Magazine] sustained coverage of the assassination and its aftermath.." The second silkscreen sheet features teletype print describing events surrounding the assassination of President John F. Jack’s family moved to Palm Springs, California, in 1950. Jack graduated from the Northwestern Military and Naval Academy in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, in 1958. After graduation, Jack joined the Army Security Agency and spent the next few years in Sinop, Turkey, where he monitored Russian Submarines from P2V aircraft. Jack returned to the United States when his Mother died in 1960. He attended College and was reactivated by the military during the “Berlin Crisis” and spent a year at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts. Jack continued his education, ultimately ending up at the University of Southern California. He left college deciding to pursue the family movie theater business in Chicago. Jack was a natural showman and promoter, and loved marketing and selling the movies. He left Chicago and the family business in the late 1960s after his father’s death. Jack moved to Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and lived on a boat for a few years. In 1971 he moved to Aspen where he would begin his passion and pursuit of Native American culture and art of the Southwest. Jack traveled extensively throughout the Southwest, studying and buying art from the Pueblo Indians, ultimately putting together one of the world’s great collections of Native American weaving and pottery. He depicted his collection in a series of serigraphs, art cards and other print work that he sold around the country and online. Richard Marshall Merkin (1938-2009) was an American painter, illustrator and arts educator. Merkin's fascination with the 1920s and 1930s defined his art and shaped his identity as a professional dandy. Merkin traveled back in time as an artist, to the time of the interwar years, creating narrative scenes (ala Robert Crumb and Ben Katchor) in bright colors of jazz musicians, film stars, writers, and sports heroes. Merkin was as well known for his painting and illustration work as he was for his eccentric collecting habits and his outré fashion sense. he received a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship in Painting. Merkin began teaching at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 1963 and remained there for 42 years, during which time he built his reputation in New York. Some notable students Merkin taught at RISD include Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth of the band Talking Heads and Martin Mull. Merkin had been a contributing editor for Vanity Fair since 1986 and a regular contributor of illustrations to The New Yorker since 1988, as well as Harper's and The New York Times' Sunday Magazine. From 1988–1991, he wrote a monthly style column called "Merkin on Style" for Gentlemen's Quarterly. Merkin also designed several album covers for the Jazz record label Chiaroscuro Records for artists such as Mary Lou Williams, Ruby Braff, and Ellis Larkins.
