"Sur la rivière (Marne)" - On the River Marne - Hand Colored Lithograph Serene depiction of a house along the Marne River by unknown artist "Charlot." This piece was commissioned and printed by Camilla Lucas Publishing in New York. A two-story house with a red roof sits on the bank of the river. Lush trees line the banks, some of which are depicted with orange-brown leaves, indicating that autumn has arrived. The color in this piece was added by hand. Titled "Sur la riviere (Marne)" in the lower left corner. Signed "Charlot" in the lower right corner. Presented in a wood frame with a double mat. Frame size: 20"W x 16"W Image size: 11.5"H x 9"W In 1928, Hungarian-born Sidney Zoltan Lucas founded "Camilla Lucas Publishing" which encompassed a wholesale art publishing house and a retail art gallery. This business was both wholesale and retail and dealt in reproductions of antique, modern, and contemporary prints. It also sold original art including etchings, lithographs, and paintings. Starting in the 1930's and continuing into the 1950's, Sydney Lucas traveled to Europe periodically and contracted with French and Flemish artists to publish their work under the banner of the "Paris Etching Society." During his career, Sydney published many thousands of images. He brought art into the homes of people at all levels of income through his etchings, serigraphs, woodblock prints, restrikes and reproductions. The various subjects included Redouté and Prevost Flowers, Barraband and Gould Birds, Piranesi, French Landscapes, Urban Scenes, Women, Children, Animals, Hunting and much more. Later on in the 1950s, Sydney and his wife Phyllis Lucas became the first North American publishers of original signed, limited edition lithographs by the famous surrealist artist Salvador Dali. They worked directly with Mr. Dali over several years and the three created such fine images that in 1985 the Lucas’ Collection of limited edition lithographs from Salvador Dali’s paintings were displayed alongside his original paintings at the Salvador Dali Museum...

In a preface, the painter and writer Andre Lhote makes the point that, with a few exceptions, the designs use no florals or other identifiable motif, the representation of nature being replaced by an interplay of abstract elements in a pure state, Forms are organized according to an casily perceived thythm. (The Delaunays frequently thought of their art in musical terms.) In this treatment, according to Lhote, everyday objects offer the artist the greatest challenge. In fact, Sonia Delaunay devoted her talents to all sorts of designs, from furniture and pottery to bookbindings and clothing. Her fashions were much in demand, not so much for originality of silhouette or construction as for inventive-ness of patterning and use of fabric. Lhote says of these designs: "In an epoch when fashion sometimes so indiscrectly unveils the form, it is necessary that the bit of fabric used to cover it be decorated in the most abstract manner, so that the eye is for an instant attracted by the figures different from those born in intimacy." The plates reveal Sonia Delaunay's further explorations with abstraction, playing color against color and form against form. This dedicated album by the Paris municipality was written, illustrated, engraved and printed in the year MCMXXXVII. This album was decorated and printed by J.-G. Daragnes for the City of Paris. This album has been completed to print on Vélins des Manufactures de Canson et Montgolfier et des Papeteries on July 14, 1937, D examples, the first CC of which were reserved for the subscribers of the album. EDMOND CÉRIA (1879-1954) From his childhood, Edmond Ceria showed a predisposition for music, drawing and painting. After studying at the Évian college, he entered the Geneva School of Fine Arts. Disappointed by teaching, he went to Paris in 1904, entered the Académie Julian and attended the Louvre museum where he discovered the work of Paul Cézanne which shocked him. He becomes a disciple of this new vision of the world, where sensitivity and love of nature replace genre and anecdote. According to René Barotte, “its incisive pages are reminiscent of Guardi or Canaletto. His style gradually frees itself from a certain rigor in execution. The touch becomes a sign, almost an ideogram, and the small painting appears written like a love poem. He began his career by exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants in 1908, then at the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon d'Automne of which he was a member. In 1919, he spent a year in Tuscany which made him aware, like Corot, of the importance of light in painting. During this stay, he copied the great Italian masters including Giotto, Uccello, Masaccio. Back in France, Ceria discovered the light of Provence, painting mainly in Marseille and Sanary. In Paris, he set up in a workshop near the Observatory and frequently went down to the quays to paint the Seine, the bridges, the Concorde, the Tuileries and the Luxembourg. In 1934, he stopped his travels in Provence to discover Brittany where he spent many years. Indifferent to fashions and unfailingly attached to the nature that he stylizes, he pursues a landscape work whose light touches highlight the accidents or reflections. When the climate forced him to paint in the studio, he devoted his talent to still lifes, which testify to his love of life, just as his landscapes reflect his taste for nature. Ceria participated, with his friends Charles Dufresne, Othon Friesz and Henry de Waroquier, in the first exhibition of the Masters of Independent Art at the Petit Palais in 1937. Always alongside Dufresne, to whom he entrusted the artistic education of his son Jacques Despierre, he decorated the small foyer of the Chaillot theater with Le Théâtre...
