Max Eisler Eine Nachlese folio "Houses in Unterach on Lake Attersee" collotype
Located in Chicago, IL
After Gustav Klimt, Max Eisler Plate #29, Am Attersee; brown-toned monochrome collotype after the 1915-16 painting in oil on canvas.
GUSTAV KLIMT EINE NACHLESE (GUSTAV KLIMT AN AFTERMATH), a portfolio of 30 collotypes prints, 15 are multi-color and 15 are monochrome, on chine colle paper laid down on heavy cream-wove paper with deckled edges; Max Eisler, Editor-Publisher; Osterreichischer Staatsdruckerei (Austrian State Printing Office), Printer; in a limited edition of 500 numbered examples of which: 200 were printed in German, 150 were printed in French and 150 were printed in English; Vienna, 1931.
2018 marks the 100th anniversary of Gustav Klimt’s death. It is a fitting time to reflect upon the enduring legacy and deep impact of his art. Recognizing this need for posterity with uncanny foresight, the publication of Gustav Klimt: An Aftermath (Eine Nachlese) provides a rare collection of work after Klimt which has proven to be an indispensable tool for Klimt scholarship as well as a source for pure visual delight.
Approximately 25 percent of the original works featured in the Aftermath portfolio have since been lost. Of those 30, six were destroyed by fire on 8 May 1945. On that fateful final day of WWII, the retreating Feldherrnhalle, a tank division of the German Army, set fire to the Schloss Immendorf which was a 16th century castle in Lower Austria used between 1942-1945 to store objects of art. All three of Klimt’s Faculty Paintings: Philosophy, Medicine and Jurisprudence (1900-1907), originally created for the University of Vienna, were on premises at that time. Also among the inventory of Klimt paintings in storage there was art which had been confiscated by the Nazis. One of the most significant confiscated collections was the Lederer collection which featured many works by Gustav Klimt such as Girlfriends II and Garden Path with Chickens. In many instances, Aftermath is our only link to these lost treasures.
Max Eisler (1881-1937), the publisher of the 1931 Aftermath portfolio, was an art historian at Vienna University specializing in modern and contemporary arts and crafts whose 1920 book on Klimt was the first Klimt monograph. He saw An Aftermath as filling-in important gaps left by the earlier print portfolios which had only featured Klimt up to 1913 and which had glossed over major art projects such as the Tree of Life frieze for the Palais Stoclet. And whereas only 10 of the 50 prints from the earlier portfolios published by H.O. Miethke were made in intricate multi-color images, Eisler augmented the earlier format by featuring half of the 30 images in stunning multi-colored collotypes. Understanding the fragile nature of the collotype printing process also reinforces this project’s distinctive and exceptional characteristics. Fragile collotype plates can not be reused. As such, this necessitates the completion of a run on the first go and also dictates a limited production number. Printed by hand, the collotypes required deft handling by the printer, Osterreichische Staatsdruckerei. A complicated and lengthy process involving gelatin colloids mixed with dichromates, the creation of 16 color separation thin glass filters to achieve the light-sensitive internegative images which could faithfully capture all of the painting’s tonal gradations and colors, exposure to actinic light, and delicate chine collie papers which allowed for greater color saturation, the printer’s collaborative role in capturing and transmitting Klimt’s nuanced paint strokes is nothing short of remarkable.
The Österreichische Staatsdruckerei (Austrian State Printing Office), was the successor to the KK Hof -und Staatsdruckerei which was founded by Emperor Franz I in 1804 and whose collotype printing innovations of Klimt’s art...

Original German, Theatine Church and Feldhernhalle Munich vintage poster
Located in Spokane, WA
Original Germany, Bavaria: Munich – the Theatine Church and Felhernhalle vintage poster. Photo by: Jaeger & Goergen, Munich.
Printed by the German National Railroad system (Deutsche Reichsbahn).
This poster is presumed printed in the 1930s. A lithograph that was printed using blue-toned ink with cream borders. Linen backed in very good condition, ready to frame.
The Theatiner Church is a colossal-looking ochre-colored church on Odeonsplatz in Munich built 1663-1692. It was the first baroque church in Bavaria and is one of the very few in Germany. The actual, official name of the Theatine Church is St. Kajetan. The big dome in the background is about 70 meters or 230 feet tall.
On the left is the Feldherrnhalle. The model for the building on Odeon Square was the Loggia dei Lanzi in central Florence, which was built in the 14th century. The two monumental lions...

Notes: From the folio, Compositions, couleurs, idées: Sonia Delaunay, 1930. Compositions conceived and created 1926-28 and issued as an album of separate loose sheets. Published and printed by Éditions d'Art, Charles Moreau, Éditeur, Paris, 1930. Excerpted from the volume, Sonia Delaunay Patterns and Designs in Full Color, Sonia Delaunay: Ses Peintures, Ses Objets, Ses Tissus Simultanés, Ses Modes (pp. 1-20), was published by Librairie des Arts Décoratifs, Paris [1925]). In addition to the plates by Delaunay, it contained poems by Joseph Delteil, Blaise Cendrars, Tristan Tzara and Philippe Soupault. In a preface, the painter and writer Andre Lhote makes the point that, with a few exceptions, the designs use no florals or other identifiable motif, the representation of nature being replaced by an interplay of abstract elements in a pure state, Forms are organized according to an casily perceived thythm. (The Delaunays frequently thought of their art in musical terms.) In this treatment, according to Lhote, everyday objects offer the artist the greatest challenge. In fact, Sonia Delaunay devoted her talents to all sorts of designs, from furniture and pottery to bookbindings and clothing. Her fashions were much in demand, not so much for originality of silhouette or construction as for inventive-ness of patterning and use of fabric. Lhote says of these designs: "In an epoch when fashion sometimes so indiscrectly unveils the form, it is necessary that the bit of fabric used to cover it be decorated in the most abstract manner, so that the eye is for an instant attracted by the figures different from those born in intimacy." (Translation by H. C. Perleberg:) Compositions, Couleurs, Idées (pp. 21-60) was published by Editions d'Art Charles Moreau, Paris [1930]. The plates reveal Sonia Delaunay's further explorations with abstraction, playing color against color and form against form.
SONIA DELAUNAY (1885-1979) was a French artist born to Jewish parents, who spent most of her working life in Paris. She was born in the Russian Empire, now Ukraine, and was formally trained in Russia and Germany, before moving to France...

La Colegiata Toro (Romanesque Santa Maria la Mayor/Zamora province Spain)
Located in New Orleans, LA
John Taylor Arms created this superb architectural image of La Colegiata in 1935 in an edition of 153. It is #12 in his Spanish Churches series and is referenced as Fletcher #284.
One of the most characteristic examples of transitional Romanesque architecture in Spain, the church of Santa María la Mayor is inspired by the Cathedral of Zamora, in turn inspired by the Old Cathedral of Salamanca. The tower-dome is usually listed as one of the four most typical in León together with those in the cathedrals of Salamanca, Plasencia and Zamora.
The church was begun around 1170, and was finished in the mid-13th century. Two different directors of the work have been identified, according to the different types of stone used (limestone in the old sections, sandstone in the most recent ones), and by the barrel vaults...

Corkscrew Willows with Stairs - Hand Colored Drypoint Etching California Adobe
Located in Soquel, CA
Delicate and detailed etching by Orpha Klinker (American, 1891-1964). At the edge of an old Adobe building, a staircase leads to the second floor. The stucco on the walls of the building is cracked, revealing the stonework below. Next to the building is a garden with Corkscrew Willow trees. One of her first projects with which Orpha impressed the public was a notable series of her large color portraits of California pioneers in the L.A.TIMES under the heading of "Speaking Of Pioneers." This led to another series on landmarks and famous tales of early California including oil paintings of historic adobes, buildings, and trees of California.
Signed in plate, lower left.
Paper size: 8.5"H x 10.5"W
Mat size: 10"H x 12"W
Orpha Klinker (American, 1891-1964) graduated from Polytechnic High School, L.A. and later studied at U.C.L.A. Art School and at the Cannon Art School. Artists Paul Lauritz and Anna A. Hills of Laguna Beach were her first art teachers. She continued her study of art at the Julian and Colarossi Academies in Europe.
Some of her earliest work was in designing. Many pages of her fine pen work drawings appeared in Los Angeles newspapers, illustrating the fashions of the day, not only in clothes but in furniture and other things. Then for a time she did her work in New York City and later with the Ladies Home Journal in Philadelphia.

From the Mexican border to Death Valley she roamed, meeting and painting portraits of such characters as Death Valley Scotty, Shoshone Johnny, the ancient Indian who supposedly saw the first white man come to Death Valley, Emanuel A. Speegle, "The Last of the 49'ers" (over 90 years of age) and others.
Orpha was active in keeping alive the memory of one historical event in particular, the signing of the Treaty of Cahuenga ending the Mexican War...
