Reuven Rubin 1893 -1974 was a Romanian-born Israeli painter and Israel's first ambassador to Romania.
Rubin Zelicovici (later Reuven Rubin) was born in Gala?i to a poor Romanian Jewish Hasidic family. He was the eighth of 13 children. In 1912, he left for Ottoman-ruled Palestine to study art at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Finding himself at odds with the artistic views of the Academy's teachers, he left for Paris, France, in 1913 to pursue his studies at the Ăcole Nationale SupĂ©rieure des Beaux-Arts. At the outbreak of World War I, he was returned to Romania, where he spent the war years.
In 1921, he traveled to the United States with his friend and fellow artist, Arthur Kolnik, with whom he had shared a studio in Cernovitzu. In New York City, the two met artist Alfred Stieglitz, who was instrumental in organizing their first American show at the Anderson Gallery.Following the exhibition, in 1922, they both returned to Europe. In 1923, Rubin emigrated to Mandate Palestine.
Rubin met his wife, Esther, in 1928, aboard a passenger ship to Palestine on his return from a show in New York. She was a Bronx girl who had won a trip to Palestine in a Young Judea competition. He died in 1974

Agnes Martin was an American painter who was born in Macklin, Saskatchewan, Canada, in 1912, and became a US citizen in 1940. Martin is perhaps most recognised for her evocative paintings marked out in subtle pencil lines and pale colour washes. Although restrained, her style was underpinned by her deep conviction in the emotive and expressive power of art. Martin believed that spiritual inspiration and not intellect created great work. âWithout awareness of beauty, innocence and happinessâ Martin wrote âone cannot make works of artâ.
In a career spanning five decades, Martin became known for her square canvasses, meticulously rendered grids and repeat stripes, though her lesser-known early works consist of experiments with mixed media and works on paper. Martin thought of her works as studies in the pursuit of perfection.
Martin spent many years working in New York, where she was part of a contemporary of artists such as Sol LeWitt, Ann Truitt, Donald Judd and Ad Reinhardt â with whom she was close friends. In 1967, shortly after Reinhardt died and just as Martinâs art was gaining acclaim, she left the city and continued her investigations into Buddhism and meditation. She wished to experience true solitude and used this period of quiet reflection to produce some of her most significant writing, whilst situated in sparsely populated and remote areas of the United States and Canada. In 1968 Martin resettled in New Mexico and began building an adobe and log house in a remote mesa. She lived there alone and without modern conveniences for several years. In 1973 she began creating work again.
Agnes Martinâs influence reaches globally and plays a hugely significant role in 20th Century art history. Whilst known as a pioneer of abstract painting, her work as well as her reclusive lifestyle have served as an inspiration to creative practitioners in diverse disciplines. Painters, photographers, writers â and many devotees from the words of fashion, architecture and graphic design revisit and rephrase her perspectival studies and fascination with geometry, the legacy of which can be seen in investigations into brevity of line and muted colour palettes. Produced for Kelly's collaboration with the August, 1982 No. 250 "DerriÚre Le Miroir: Hommage à Aimé et Marguerite Maeght" portfolio. Text on verso as issued.
Kelly produced the drawing for "Lotus" in Spencertown, New York, and sent the transfer-paper study to Paris for proofing. It was included in the final memorial issue of 'Derriere Le Miroir' with prints by Eduardo Chillida, Takis, Pierre Alechinsky, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Shusaku, Arakawa, and Saul Steinberg, to name only a few of the 24 artists who provided original graphic work for this issue. "Lotus" was based on the ink drawing "Lotus" (EK No. P74.65).
In October 1945, the French art dealer Aimé Maeght opens his art gallery at 13 Rue de Téhéran in Paris. His beginning coincides with the end of Second World War and the return of a number of exiled artists back to France. The magazine Derriere Le Miroir was created in October 1946 and published without interruption until 1982. Maeght's ambition in establishing his print shop and his publication magazine Derriere Le Miroir was to make available to a broader audience less expensive printed imagery by the artists of his time, many whom were represented by his Paris gallery. Its original articles and illustrations (mainly original color lithographs by the gallery artists) were famous at the time.

Groundbreaking print studios like Gemini began to crop up in the mid-20th century. The timing was due to the fact that many artists had developed a taste for printmaking during the Great Depression via the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which opened print shops for unemployed artists to help create useful and uplifting messages that could be widely disseminated.
